"Queen opening to massive cheers with "Bohemian Rhapsody", and the antics of lead singer Freddie Mercury who got the entire Wembley crowd clapping in unison to "Radio Ga Ga" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" before singing along, word-for-word, to "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions". The band's performance, also including "Hammer to Fall", led to Queen's slot being voted in a recent poll (by fans and musicians alike) as the 'Greatest Live Gig Ever'."
"Queen's iconic performance at Live Aid in July 1985 has been named the world's greatest rock gig in an industry poll."

I was there. There were amazing artists, Elton John, David Bowie, The Who, Paul McCartney, U2. But when Queen came on they just slayed everyone. At the end of Live Aid when we were leaving to catch our train we were walking through the underground tunnels and the whole crowd was singing Bohemian Rhapsody and it echoed through the tunnels. Spine tingling even thinking about it now 30 years later.

There also were two giant screens to either side of the stage. They had 3 big screens in Philadelphia on their side, and the crowd over there was also singing in unison and clapping along and waving their arms along with the broadcast they were watching.

Just something he was born with. Some people have even said ' who would've thought an immigrant from India would be blessed with such an amazing ability to command the attention of a huge stadium.' my answer, he was a badass, that's how. Freddie made it look easy....his presence, charisma and a voice that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

I was there . The experience was overpowering, the power he had over the crowd was total, my wife was scared " he could be a Hitler". Many, many years later at the closing of the London Olympics and the tape of Freddy got the crowd singing "God! he can do it even when he is dead". It still chokes me.

Watched the entire live broadcast from beginning to end here in Los Angeles, saw Queen here many times during the 70's, major fan (L.A. was in love with Queen, still is to a degree) So when Queen's set came up, there's good old Freddie and the boys, good as gold as usual......until.............Radio Ga Ga. I realized that something was not the same and I didn't know exactly what it was as the song went on. During the 70's and 80's I saw nearly everyone who came to my town..rock, pop, blues, you name it, everything except country. So I can rightfully say I've seen the best of that era, with my own eyes. Tons of money on tickets over the years. But I never saw and felt music history made in all that time and I saw it and felt it watching a television, of all things. There's no way for me to properly describe that experience any further in this post.

Geldof "The last people anyone expected to come out of that gig as being the memorable ones were Queen". Speak for yourself Geldof. Everyone I knew at the time were looking forward to Queen more than anyone else, which is why they got such a huge cheer when they came on stage. Queen had always been the greatest stadium rock band ever and everyone expected great things from them. Geldof doesn't half talk some bollocks sometimes.

aucourant That was shortly after the debacle in South Africa where Queen played Sun City and were vilified for it by the press, fellow musicians, and the fans. Queen had been laying low for a while (there was even talk about Queen being finished) and I think the surprise was more for the reaction they got welcoming them back to the fold than actually being surprised at how they performed.

+aucourant - Queen were fantastic, but you gotta remember Queen were a working band, they'd just come out of a very long tour so were ship-shape, well rehearsed etc They also rehearsed this 'medley' numerous times over the previous couple of months. They knew this performance could elevate them. The Who, on the other hand, hadn't played for 3 years and apparently rehearsed their set twice only, and it showed lol Led Zep was a similar situation. Everything fell into place for Queen and they delivered.

At the age of 21, this concert was one of my proudest moments even though I stayed home and watched it on TV. Having several younger siblings, 'my' music was 'old' music, "ugh, my brother listens to Queen" "Who's Queen?" were common statements around the house from their friends. Then Live Aid covered the world and a group of these 'younger generation" sat around. Suddenly their eye's were glued to the screen. "Is that Queen?" They asked, knowing it was, but double checking this was the same 'Queen' this old man listened to! Freddie and the band didn't just impress the world, nor did they just own the universe, but they improved my reputation and street cred too! Since then, I always voice my opinion as if it matters, because I'm not as naive as I look!

Here is why three specific things made this so brilliant -- 1 = they cut the numbers short, and spared the audience for boring instrumental solo,s / presentation of band members = boooring, and no one cares - 2 = they "mixed" some of the tracks into eachother like a DJ would do, and by doing this avoided boring pauses, and kept people "on the beat" - 3 = Freddies outstanding Daaaooh inter action with the audience - nothing beats that - he was on a different level - world class act.

"More than a decade before this show".. That's the point. It's crazy to think, but many people at the time thought the audience would look at them as old has-beens who'd had their day and were now secondary to the likes of Wham, Sting, U2, Duran Duran, etc. Even Queen themselves were nervous about taking part for this reason.

a big gang of us from work was all watching live aid in Tottenham on tv and all dancing in the street and when queen came on it took a few minutes to see this was no ordinary show , queen stole it big time , unreal it was , and 13 years later i met my wife in Ireland and she was a neighbour of Freddies boyfriend and i met him , a lovely man he was , but that day in july 1985 will never leave me , its a shame we have to grow old and die but sure i suspose if we had some great times it wont be so bad

Its such a tragic loss that the era of these amazing artists has gone, noone can ever replace the likes of Freddy Mercury, Michael Jackson and other artists that not only created music that stunned the world, but also what they stood for, both Freddy and Micheal devoted so much of their lives to the good of humanity, donating not only money but countless hours of their lives to trying to make the world a better place to live in both today and the future. There are very few artists left in the world today that would give so much with no expectation of return. Think of the new bands and acts out today who have made millions from their music, yet do nothing for any cause present today, they forget where they have come from, and what good they can use their so called fame towards, its sad that they have forgotten or dont care how much of an effect they can have

My boss in London told me she was in the front row. I wish I'd been old enough to have been there! But I did try on his pink suit he wore in the Great Pretender video. My PE teacher won it, we didn't believe her and she brought it in. Small consolation but I have all their singles and most of the albums on vinyl now. It's a real joy to stick on the early stuff and drift off. But this gig....I mean how good was Freddie? He was stratospheric. Still missed
