I actually like this one. Maybe due to the subject matter; who hasn't been subjected to back chat or feeling unheard and disrespected? I believe John wrote this as a result of Brian & Roger's disapproval of John's foray into funk. After the success of "Another One Bites the Dust", he was somewhat bolder in bringing the style to the band. Brian argued to include the guitar solo.

I quite enjoy this stuff. This is probably due to my relatively younger age, though. I didn't experience the material transition to Hot Space and my first introduction to Queen was a lot of the 80s material. I do think that there is a lot of really good stuff following Hot Space and Queen always kept up the fantastic nature of their live shows.

As I said before, Queen wasn't afraid to delve into all categories of music, they took chances that worked out and was brilliant, this album didn't work out, but they moved on and created more really great albums especially Innuendo, that album is fantastic. Thanks for your honest reaction.

Queenified dance music done live is okay with me--they just liked to do different things--it's only a few songs on the album--as Freddie said people take these things so seriously--good grief. Obviously the rest of their music catalog is better. The real shame is that so many so-called fans (especially in the US) abandoned them after this and didn't even listen to the rest of their albums.

You can like or dislikes the Hot Space music but how you dare to decreased and laugh for the experiencie that Freddie and Queen tries in this album? I particularly like so much the live version of Back chat, think is funny and fantastic as Freddie usually is... what your problem ? Who do you think you are?

John brought this song to the studio and Freddie helped him work on it so they both were credited with it. I actually like this song a lot even though it is not what I would be looking for as a Queen song. I think if this was say a Huey Lewis song or something, we would all really be loving it. Thank you. The gossip story goes that John was wanting a divorice at one point, but his wife is a devout Catholic and that just wasn't going to happen so perhaps this is John venting his frustrations or not. He is still married and together they raised 6 children. John maintains a very low profile and keeps his life very private so it is not actually confirmed if he and Veronica still live together or not. It really doesn't matter I suppose, as long as they both are happy with their choices and living situations. The reality is that nearly 50 years later they are still married. Neither Brian or Roger were interested in doing this album because they just felt it was not Queen. It was Freddie and John who really pushed for it arguing that Queen needed to stay relevant to what was going on at the time. Brian and Roger felt that there was still plenty left to do as Queen without taking a giant leap into something that was not in their wheelhouse.

I like the studio version of this song too, and this is from a devoted fan of their first 6 albums who was disappointed with about 80% of what they did after News of the World. As a fan of Queen since the mid 70's, I've seen/heard most interviews with the band and others and read just about everything there is to read about them (I have at least 2 dozen books on them), and you've shared some new information...so thank you for that. Freddie did work on this with John, but the songwriting credit is 100% John along with the royalties that go with it. One of the interesting things to me about Roger and especially Brian not being committed to the dance direction of this album's first side is that Brian wrote - to me - the best dance track on Hot Space in Dancer.
@sherryheim5504
@sherryheim5504 Ай бұрын
@@toddmathers5075 You are absolutely correct, I was confusing writing credit of this song with Cool Cat. Thank you for clearing that up for those reading here. I think Brian always believed in Queen and in many ways it was his baby from the start because of Smile and it stands to reason that Brian would put his best foot forward when writing for the album. I have heard Brian doing all kinds of music in his other endeavors outside of Queen but I feel that he had a mental direction and image of what Queen was and looking at what was well received and what wasn't, he was probably correct. Brian is a mental giant if nothing else so I tend to hear him out on such things.

I remember dancing to this in a nightclub in 1983 lol. To be fair to them, the album version is better. It's slower, less frenetic, and overall superior. Also I'd say that this was in the wake of Another One Bites the Dust, and Michael Jackson himself really encouraged them to go in this direction.

Back-chat meaning - Rude or cheeky remarks made in reply to someone in authority! Basically, John Deacon’s response to Brian & Roger’s defiance regarding the music direction that Freddie & Deaky wanted to experiment with. IMO, I think the Hot Space album is good! Please check out SOUL BROTHER. 👨🏻

Good Grief. People crucify the Hot Space album when there were also some other great songs on it. The discussion here is flaying them for the very attribute which always stood them apart in the first place: They were always trying new things and “reinventing” themselves. They were also “not afraid to fall flat on our faces”, as Freddie put it. Part of this discussion just stems from the fact that there are fans who prefer Queen’s 1970s overall style (and feel that Queen “sold out” when they began changing) vs fans who prefer Queen’s later style. For the most part, I prefer 1980s Queen. (The guitar instrumentation in a song rarely “does it for me”, no matter how technically impressive. I guess for me, it’s vocals, lyrics and relatability.) …My two favorite albums are Innuendo and Made In Heaven.

I think I’m the only one who really likes Hot Space. Yes it’s different. Is it like listening to some of their more complicated songs from earlier no. It’s lighter but fun to listen to. Why would people want to stereotype them so that they are relegated to playing the same type of music forever. They tried everything. That’s part of what makes them great.

The album version is slower and has more groove and the guitar solo is better. I think it’s funny that they decided to do disco after it was dead. But the reality it was only dead in the US. Disco never really died, it was and still is huge in Europe, and if you listen to todays charts its still there its just labeled differently.

My mind immediately goes to "Got to be Real," Cheryl Lynn...also Duran, Duran. There's another New Wave tune that has almost the same groove...not sure if it's The Clash? Where are those "Roger" drums, "Brian" grooves? There was a real rift between Rock, Disco and New Wave music at the time too. Queen picked Kilimanjaro to climb on this trek......

But this stuff is not the sound and quality of Queen and i have trouble admitting to myself that this the same band that can write great songs and rock with the best of them. Not a good period in time to be a Queen fan. Btw. Queen Ii is still my favourite Queen album and is much underrated and overlooked by many . Cheers Justin.

I completely agree. Hot Space is a very weak album, a product of a period of discord within the band as well as musical and personal disorientation, particularly for Freddie but also for Brian. Cool Cat stands out as an unusual track, with no involvement from either Brian or Roger, only Deacon and Freddie, who sings entirely in falsetto. Please, Justin, could you react to Innuendo?? (1991), I think you really would like it!

Who is Chaka Khan? Says the world wise music lover. Then again. Perhaps Freddie's comment interested some of his world-wide fans in "Black Music". Freddie was a brilliant entertainer and now perhaps you are turning others onto fantastic "Black Music" lovers. Thanks. (Freddie Mercury loved music...even Opera. Gave each genre his everything. It was painful hearing you castigate our Queen boys for working hard to give fans a fantastic performance. BTW, revisit the rousing response those fans gave Freddie, Roger, John and Brian as they concluded the rousing number.)

You summed it up perfectly. There's no argument that they are great musicians, vocalists, etc., but this is not why Queen was/is known and loved. This was a very self-indulgent project/period for them and between this and the cross-dressing music video they lost a huge chunk of their US fan base who just didn't get it. You are so right that there are bands of this genre that could take Queen to school on how this kind of music can be done. It's a shame. After this album there were still some good songs. For that matter Under Pressure is on that album, but that song was a single long before and really wasn't part of the sessions. Your choice to do the live versions is pretty smart, because these songs sound way worse with the synthetic instruments.

@@kvassrock That might be true. Definitely my favorite music of theirs was in the seventies, and I loved it when Brian got dirty with that guitar scream, they did the multi-layered harmonies and they got clever with different eras and types of music. I probably liked less of their eighties music than you did. Innuendo was, for me, the closest they came to having a great album since Jazz. Only a few songs have it come up short. The opening and closing songs were amazing.
