I was in Afghanistan as a contractor back in 2006. One evening while I was at the airbase in Kandahar, word came around that there was a ramp ceremony about to occur for a fallen soldier. Everyone lined the road as the casket was carried to the waiting aircraft, followed by a piper. Soldiers saluted as the casket passed, I stood and did the appropriate thing. I will carry that memory to my grave. As I recall, the piper was playing "Flowers of the Forest"

I watched her funeral as they laid her in state a bagpiper walked through the chapel playing his pipes. It was sad. You may not liked the royal family but you gotta respect a funeral. I cried as that piper walked through the halls of the church she was buried in.

I do believe she knew her time was coming to an end and chose to die in Scotland. She was concerned it would be a bit of a logistical burden, but it wasn't really. Scotland can take pride in the fact that she was the nation where The Queen (not a queen, The Queen) chose to pass away after a long, long life. I support an independent Scotland, but am still proud that we were the first to pay her tribute and see her to her rest.

My Scots friend who has emigrated to Australia thought the Scots were personally committed to Her Majesty and would keep her their Queen even if they created their own dominion (and, with the consent of HM, their own Realm). He was not nearly so positive about HM King Charles... he's not a Scot and HRH Prince William is majority English. Of all the Kings of England and the United Kingdom, the last one to be a majority English was Henry VIII's teenage son, and he never ruled.... he was under 18, and so he had a Regent... and he died before reaching his 18th birthday. His father had also had to wait to rule, but he reached his 18th birthday in robust health. Other monarchs were English queens, Scots, or foreigners like William (born Willem, the Stadtholder of Amsterdam) or the current line starting with HM King George I.

My Great-grandfather, who died at Vimy Ridge, My Grandfather was from Glasgow. Spent most of the WW2 in a POW camp in Poland. My fathers family came to Canada in 1852. From Moffat. I still am fortunate to have relatives in Perth. I have been to Scotland twice. My cousins are still there of course. The bagpipes are a "din" to a lot of people, but not to me. From Edinburgh to Sterling, to Moffat County, Inverness ect. To the Black Watch. My Grandpa was Black Watch. The bagpipes are a reminder of the outlawed instrument , the clearances of the highlands. I think I will choose either Sleep dearie sleep or Flowers of the Forest for my own lament. As a side note. During WW2, if you hear the bagpipes coming, give up or run. Black Watch.

@@brewsader6451 Scots is not a version of English. Old Scots is a language of it's own. English originated in England. Not Scotland. Scotland had Gaelic, mostly in the north, south it was scots. Two different languages. Gaelic was also prevalent in Ireland. Burns wrote in Scots, the old language. Nothing to do with English. He did, yes, write in English as well. Old Scots was considered uncouth at this point. Old Scots was considered politically incorrect at his time. (and after). But, no matter. Burns wrote in both, but mostly Scot. He was a Scotsman after all!
@brewsader6451
@brewsader6451 Ай бұрын
@MsShoosh1 so I'm sorry to be so blunt. But you're wrong. SCOTTISH is its own language and is the colloquial term for Scottish Gaelic. Scots, is literally what Robert Burns wrote in. It is a dialect of English. In fact, it was called Scots in order to give it a distinct label, separating it from Gaelic. If a version of a language is mutually intelligible with other speakers of that language, it is a dialect. Really. Go look it up. Additionally, I went to Uni in Scotland, I lived there, and i took one of my undergrad degrees in Historical Linguistics. Just in case some credibility is needed.

When played correctly, yes. It is however an EXTREMELY unforgiving instrument. It does not hide the player’s mistakes. At all. One mistake on an embellishment, and suddenly a veteran piper sounds like a student. People think it’s nuts to give your kid bagpipes, not realizing that the first year is usually spent on a quiet practice chanter, so no hearing protection or tranquilizers are necessary. The real test of parental courage is the violin.

You know what I like most about this clip? The emotional pause when the Queen unprecedentedly confides in Pipes after "there are days when I wake up and it all feels a bit-..." It could've been just a dull and boring dramatic silence where we would simply bask in Imelda Staunton's powerful acting, but instead, we were lucky enough to be graced with a sound effect by the channel asking us to subscribe and click on the notification bell icon. Now THAT'S what a channel dedicated to cinema should do, I don't think there's a greater show of respect for the art.

I cannot get over the casual way in which HM addresses him as "Pipes." I cannot find a source for it, but I am willing to bet that this is a nickname common among military personnel in Great Britain & Scotland, similar to "Sparks" for a naval radioman, or "Boats" for a Bosun's Mate. The reason it's significant - at least to me - is that, if this is so, HM here is addressing him, however momentarily, as the former Sergeant Windsor, soldier to soldier, rather than as Her Majesty the Queen. Which I find eminently fitting and appropriate, a momentary connection between people from very different stations in life. HM was a class act all her life. I miss her greatly.

Jesus. The Scots do know how to make sad music. I am an American, and, in part, of Scottish descent, and quite proud of my family's heritage. I do not know this particular piece of pipes music, but when combined with the female vocals, it literally brings me to tears. As to the scene here from "The Crown," I do think it's important to remember HM the Queen was half-Scots, from her mother's side. Too often, commentators refer to House of Windsor as "German," which, of course, is true in part. But those Hannoverians were all direct lineal descendants of the House of Stuart of Scotland, who became the monarchs of Scotland and England, and later, the United Kingdom. The Scots traditions of the royal family run deep.

i concur with the Queen. nothing moves me like Scottish pipes, bith singly, and also the who band marching with drums. brings me to tears every time. music is universal to lovers of it, my grandparents immigrated from poland and belarus...

I’m American and I did shed tears once she died. I like to think of her as the Worlds Grandmother. Regardless of how you view the royals…from America, I did have a genuine respect and care for her. This is a good video.

I am not a fan of the bagpipes, but I have to admit that when they were played at the end of the service in Windsor, they were totally sublime. I am in tears thinking of that day. It was a day that I had long dreaded despite not being a monarchist, I had enormous respect for Her Late Majesty. I shall never forget that day. I finally understand films that I have seen of her father's funeral. The sadness of the people over his death is now mirrored in my own sadness.

There's something about the Pipes that can stir the soul. As one not born to them, my wife's family is of Scots decent on her father's side. I have heard many of my father-in-law's Pipe albums, and there are many that I find pleasing. The Pipes may be an acquired taste to some, but their tones can be haunting and inspiring.

As she got older, she seemed to connect far more to her Scottish side. Or she stopped trying to hide it.
@Biketunerfy
@Biketunerfy 4 ай бұрын
She never tried to hide it. Her home in Scotland was her favourite residence she could walk around outside the grounds in the village and no one bothered her. She could be her self just a member of the community. This why Scotland was her favourite place in the U.K. and why she wanted to die in Scotland. She loved Scotland with all her heart and the Scottish people. Charles is also the same. There’s a Video of King Charles just walking alone down this road and he bumps into some tourists on bikes and has a good chat with them. This is why the Royals love Scotland no one bothers them.

@@sleedog1 She did. She loved Scotland and her people. I’m half English and half Scottish like Queen Elizabeth II. My Dad is Scottish from Kirkcaldy, Scotland and my mother is from Stockton-on-tees, England, we go up there from England at least twice a year to visit my Scottish side of my family and see my uncle who is like a second father to me. I love Scottish people and English people just as our late Queen did. We share that in common with each other as do I with our King. You can tell I’m half Scottish because I love whisky and haggis and white pudding and square sausage and I stock up when I’m up there lol.

I know that lyrics are: "Soldier lie down on your wee pickle straw It's not very broad and it's not very braw But Soldier it's better than nothing at all (So) Sleep, Soldier, sleep. Dearie lie down on your wee pickle straw It's not very broad and it's not very braw But Dearie it's better than nothing at all (So) Sleep, Dearie, sleep. Sleep, Dearie, sleep." But one of the lines of the melodies I always think of without meaning to are: "For the sound of bagpipes will call you home."
