Freddie Mercury wrote this and dedicated it to Norman Sheffield, Queen's former manager and a co owner of Trident Studios. Queen felt that Norman had not provided them with the support they needed.The surviving band members noted the unhappy atmosphere in the Days of our Lives documentary, explaining that the band felt hard done by when they were producing hit singles without seeing any of the money - and with incidents such as Roger Taylor being told he couldn't hit the drums too hard as they supposedly "couldn't afford" new drumsticks. But as Taylor noted, "you see them (the management) running around in stretch limos and think 'hang on there's something not right here!'" The split occurred under very acrimonious circumstances, and this song acted as something of a final word from the band. The lyrics form a harsh character portrait that outline the band's full animosity towards their former acquaintance. Mercury was reportedly not a fan of the song after writing it, having felt it was too angry and bitter, but May encouraged him to complete it. On the Live Killers version, Freddie Mercury introduced this song by saying, "This is a song about a real motherf--ker of a gentleman!"

Thanks for the info about the Live Killers version. I've often wondered what Freddie said, because on my copies (LP and CD), it's censored. He introduces it like this; "This next song is from A Night At The Opera. This is about a BEEP BEEP BEEP. We call him Death on Two Legs" :)

The intro is just fantastic! First the piano, then it shifts to guitar, so chaotic and angry, it builds in intensity, to the overbearing... I don't know what instrument it is, but it's like a musical shriek. Then it abruptly stops, the piano begins again as though the song has reset. It's like the anger gets so intense that it has stop and restart to get focused to deliver the delightful comebacks. Such a fantastic song!

*Not-so-fun fact:* Freddie dedicated this song to Norman Sheffield (Queen's former manager and a co-owner of Trident Studios who was basically robbing them of their money at the time) after being released from that management, Freddie wanted to express his feelings towards the man in a song. Gary Langhan remembers when Freddie took his headphones off after laying his vocal tracks on DOTL, he witnessed blood pouring out from Fred's ears just from the sheer anger he put into the song, and sometime later on Freddie said that his throat was literally bleeding because he went so hard on the song.

I know this song is about the manager, but hear me out, This song always reminds me of my friends in high school, they ignored me, constantly talked shit about me behind my back, treated me like shit when i was around and tell me to shut up whenever i was talking about something i was passinate about, took me until last year to just leave them behind. And this song helped me realise that. Thank you.

Exactly the same with me, whenever I used to talk about things like queen or the Beatles they would ignore me and laugh at me and I would feel like they were friends and I was kind of the loner of the group so then one day at the school dance I asked the DJ to play this and he hadn’t heard the song so I asked him to dedicate it to my 3 best friends (then I said their names)... they hate me, but everyone was laughing so hard lol

Brian May is the most under looked, not underrated, but definitely under looked classic rock guitarist. Its always Gilmore, Page, Clapton, exc. Nobody ever mentions Brian May but when that someone does mention him as a top 3 great. Most people then recognize what else, but Bohemian Rhapsody. Thank you Wayne's World! Although this is my absolute favorite May riff and solo.

I agree with you in that he's underrated and a fantastic guitar player but um...top 3 is a stretch there bud. The people you just mentioned: Gilmore, Clapton, and Page, are way better guitar players, and lets not mention Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen
@neuralmute
@neuralmute 5 жыл бұрын
@@kangurukaiser9395 I'd rate May over van Halen. Brian might not be quite as technical, but he's got more depth of feeling to his playing, and I'd say he's a better songwriter by far. Of course, when we're discussing the best of the best, so much comes down to personal taste, as there IS no way to objectively rate guitar players. All I can say is that Hendrix is God, and let the rest sort themselves out from there!
