cgarcia1777 Years ago the local radio station had a For Headphones Only show that they would take suggestions for. I suggested this song. A few weeks later it was played and the bastar...I mean the DJ acted like it was his idea. Oh well, it is a brilliant song and one of my favorites so I was glad it got more exposure. It doesn’t deserve to be the sleeper it is.

They were worried that Bohemian Rhapsody wouldn't get airplay because it's too long and it incorporates too much opera into it. This song is the longest in Queen's repertoire, and much darker sounding than even most Black Sabbath songs that got airplay at the time, with two and a half minutes of nothing but Freddie's voice overlaid with itself. It would never have gotten on the radio back then. It's a gem that was doomed to obscurity from the start.

If this song hadn't appeared on the same album as Bohemian Rhapsody, I suspect it would have been even more popular. For any other band, this song would have been the high point of their career, but Freddie managed to come up with something even more epic, so it wasn't.

Also think so. It seems the group have paid much attention to BR, making it a masterpiece. And The Prophet`s song was left as is. It is too long for single, Freddie`s solo sequenzas and choir part lack something special, the song is ending with a transition to Love of My Life instead of own coda. But the music material is excellent- it could be a real sympho rock superhit. Pity, it is not.

Brian May speaks about The Great Flood and its different stories or interpretations according to other religions. This song's main reason has to do with a specific dream he had a long time ago. It's about the people on the street trying to hold hands, but because of the selfishness that was going on at the time, it was more complicated. They needed guidance and direction from one another. This song is tuned in D (regarding the guitar), to obtain lower notes and particular effects on the guitar, as he shared his points on this piece. Before the official title of this piece, they called it previously *PEOPLE OF THE EARTH* , BUT after thorough consideration, it should be better to add it to the lyrics, instead of naming the song that way in the first place. It has a lot of Japanese influence, that's why you can hear a *Koto* (a kind of string instrument that you pluck like a harp) during the beginning of the song; it's mentioned that there's a reference to Noah's Ark and that the animals went in two by two (male and female), boarding the vessel (also mentioning US as animals too). This was accomplished by _Roy Thomas Baker_ . Mercury designed all the vocals and played with them along the song, like a kind of manifestation of things and holy prophecy.

Freddie's vocal part is recorded with two open reel hi-fidelity tape machines. One is playing back and the other is recording so that it makes a loop. He's essentially singing along with himself a second and half later.
