Like stated earlier, it was actually Roger Taylor's idea to dress them up in drag. It was meant to be a parody of a tv soap opera "Coronation Street" and also show off Queen not taking themselves too seriously. Worked well.

It was actually Rogers girlfriend that came up with the idea of dressing up in drag. The song and video was not to welcomed in the USA by fans as it only reached 45 it managed to reach number 3 in the UK and number 4 in Germany. It was released in 1984 with John Deacon writing it. Roger Taylor was quoted saying “We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought we’d have some fun. We wanted people to know that we didn’t take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that”.

John Deakins wrote the song (he's the grumpy older lady on the couch), about how he viewed the struggle of women seeking equality in the workplace in the 80s. There's a long and respected history of male actors crossdressing in the UK. They were spoofing a long-running British soap opera called Coronation Street.

@stevenfritchie7529
@stevenfritchie7529 3 жыл бұрын
The "dream" sequence was based on a controversial ballet called "Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun". It was performed by Vaclav Nijinsky, a famous ballet dancer whose manager was gay and who it was believed Nijinsky was gay. Freddy was wearing the exact same costume as Nijinsky did, which was considered scandalous because it revealed Nijinsky's "assets". The critics hated the ballet which was composed by Claude Debussy in 1894.
@neuralmute
@neuralmute 3 жыл бұрын
Nijinsky was most definitely bisexual at the very least, and had well known (and scandalous!) affairs with both men and women. He was a brilliant and revolutionary dancer, but was unfortunately also schizophrenic, and died way too young, much as Freddie did. Freddie was a *massive* fan of ballet and opera, and he would have known all about the dancer he was casting himself as here!

I saw in an interview or read somewhere; Decky was compilating on leaving the band when he was composing the song. Yes, it was Rogers idea to dress drag for the video and that is what got the song banned from Mtv. When Mtv did that, Freddie refused to tour in the states again and that stayed in effect until Adam Lambert joined the group.

I had always assumed all the members of Queen knew Freddy struggled with his sexuality. The big song about him really grasping the fact he was gay was Bohemian Rhapsody. Poeple miss the subtlety in the lyric. Revisit the sone and think that the whole killed a man and gotta leave you all behind and face the truth is about killing a version of himself and letting the new him shine on. The middle Operatic section is a perfect metaphor for his confusion and coming out to others....until the climactic sort of "fuck you " section about finally being free and proud.

It's one of those songs which has such a fantasy feel about it. I think people should just listen to it, think about it, and then make up their own minds as to what it says to them... "Bohemian Rhapsody" didn't just come out of thin air. I did a bit of research although it was tongue-in-cheek and mock opera. Why not? -Freddie Mercury. (Davis, Andy (1993). "Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody". Record Collector (167): 20.) In a BBC Three documentary about the making of "Bohemian Rhapsody", Roger Taylor maintains that the true meaning of the song is "fairly self-explanatory with just a bit of nonsense in the middle". When the band released a Greatest Hits cassette in Iran, a leaflet in Persian was included with translation and explanations (refers to a book published in Iran called The March of the Black Queen by Sarah Sefati and Farhad Arkani, which included the whole biography of the band and complete lyrics with Persian translation (2000)). In the explanation, Queen states that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is about a young man who has accidentally killed someone and, like Faust, sold his soul to the devil. On the night before his execution, he calls for God saying, "Bismillah" ("In the name of God" in Arabic), and with the help of angels, regains his soul from Shaitan (the devil in Islam).

The men with head lamps surrounding the band when not in drag are coal miners. There was massive problems at the time, Margret Thatcher (prime minister) closed down mines etc. Lots of politics in this song and video.

Wasn't Roger a cutie? How about Brian's curlers and John on the couch. It was written originally as a male perspective on the Women's liberation movement... Not about Freddie's life. Freddie actually danced with the London Ballet Company for a time as well.

Just to be clear...this song was written by John Deacon...it’s nothing to do with Freddie....it’s about women’s liberation 🤩

He safeguarded his sexual preferences up until his death pretty much but dressing in drag had nothing to do with that. This video was making fun of soaps that were popular in the UK at the time. American audiences didn't see the funny side at the time of its release though

Oddly, I never heard about any controversy over Klinger wearing womens dresses on the US TV show M.A.S.H. And that was done in a kind of humorous way too. And two years before I Want To Be Free was released, there was the US movie Tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman who appears in drag. So it seems puzzling that a lot of US viewers were okay with all that but were shocked when Queen did basically the same thing in a music video.

@@anzaeria The other side of this video was also misunderstood. There was a soap opera named Coronation Street filmed in Northern UK around the time and a lot of the suburban housing estates appeared like you see at the beginning of IWTBF. You'd have to watch it to get what the lads were poking fun at
