As a composition it's a remarkable example of considerable creativity. The idea that someone took blank headspace, and put these highly diverse elements together in a way that works stunningly well, is a testament to how intelligent this band was and is.

Their first BIG hit. I was 12 when this came out. It was my favorite song and I was in love with the neighbor girl. Music is great for recalling memories and feelings.

This was from a performance on the British show Top of the Pops. In an interview Brian and Roger stated that Freddie wasn't into doing this show as they had to lip sync, the drums were dead and guitars weren't plugged in. That said, this put them on the radio in the US. And as they say, the rest is history.

Their two masterpiece albums were A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976). I remember as an 11 and 12 year old respectively at the time mesmerized with headphones on listening to the LPs (vinyl) over and over again. It changed my life Two words: Bohemian Rhapsody. It just distills their musicianship, creativity and showcases them at the height of their powers.

This was I believe on a chart show called Top ofThe Pops in the UK, they only play on this show once as they where not allowed to play live, so when Bohemian Rhapsody became number one they did a video which I believe I may be wrong was the first music video . They refused to go on the show as they would not let them play lve

Killer Queen was the first vinyl 7” single I ever bought with my own pocket money. I’d been saving for quite some time. It was 1974. I was 7 years old. I can still remember the exact moment that record was handed to me as if it were yesterday!

This song was written by Freddie and Brian May once commented that it was “very Freddie”. I love the song and agree with you about their style. In the earlier years Freddie was insistent that they all dress in black and white, so if you check out the earlier videos, that is the case. Later on each band member wore what they wanted, Love your reaction to this amazing song!

This is like an old melody from the 20's or 30's. You can clearly hear the jazz combo/music hall arragements from that era. These albums were a tribute to The Marx Brothers. They presented their "A Night At The Opera" album to Groucho Marx.

You guys crack me up. And Dee, that was a great observation about Freddie Mercury's voice. He's good at this in general but it's really on display in this song. He effortlessly moves back and forth from falsetto to chest voice in the middle of even complicated intervals in run. It's amazing. But I like everything about the arrangement of this song. I was really young when I heard it on the radio and I ran out and bought the 45 single.

The UK has a much deeper musical history, as well as better education, generally, so it is little wonder that their bands tend to be more advanced, technically, than American bands. Plus they are competing with The Beatles. When this came out, our hippie hangouts became Wayne's World, replete with headbobs and bad but ample hair. Prophet Song is also superb in a similar way.

It was freddies single earlier in the year seven seas their first to chart no 10 uk The show was for singles that were on the charts but they were stuck so let them perform It had a great response so it was released a few days later Because of the bbc strikes they had to film in the weather studio!

Please, please react to George Michael's performance of Somebody to Love at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. There are a number of amazing performances at this concert including Elton John, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Axl Rose and Slash from Guns and Roses, Joe Elliott and Phil Collen from Def Leppard and many others were there. Unbelievably, no one was expecting much from George but he blew everybody away. Even Queen's guitarist Brian May said George's performance was the "best of the gig" Something everyone should see and hear!

The way they look and dress in this 1973 song, the flared jeans, the long, natural hair, all that, that wasn't so unusual for rock groups at the time; wasn't even that unusual for people on the street. The lead singer's women's jacket and nail polish were unusual for city streets, but he was just doing something that Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Todd Rundgren, and the New York Dolls were also doing in the early seventies. And by the time "Another One Bites the Dust" came out in 1980, they had changed their style with the times, with the lead singer sporting short, short hair and straight-leg Levi 501 jeans instead of flares, plus 50s-revival black leather motorcycle jackets and sleeveless t-shirts. These guys were really good, but in dress they just followed the trends of the time like everybody did.

Not a live performance. A big giveaway visually is the fact that there are no guitar and bass leads and consequently no amps. The sound is the mastered studio recording which would be impossible to recreate in such audio splendour live; for example three guitars can be heard, and there are those trademark multi-layered vocals. Such a visual/audio match was the norm back in the day to represent a newly released record when shown on a music TV show.

You should react to singer Lizz Wright. You might be familiar with her because she does Jazz/Blues/etc. She has several albums and performs at the best venues, but for some reason she is one of the most under appreciated artists IMHO.
