I’m always amazed at Queen’s consistency. They were incredible every time. Freddie had such a gorgeous voice. Queen had so many songs to choose from! 🤩

For any other concert I would agree with you that Tie Your Mother Down is the perfect opener, but for Live Aid? Playing to a worldwide audience of more than a billion and opening with your absolute biggest hit was unexpected and brilliant. No one opens a show with their biggest song. My .02.

I totally agree that Tie Your Mother Down is a perfect opener for a Queen show. It hits the stage like a storm and is the perfect song for jumping around and releasing all the excitement from all the anticipation...plus the chorus is easy to sing along to which is exactly what the crowd wants to do at that point. One of my favorite songs too bass and guitar are just rippin' drums are driving it all home.

I agree about Tie Your Mother Down, however, with Live Aid everyone was advised to play the hits that everyone recognized. Tie your mother wasn’t a big hit back in the day. Obviously, everyone recognized Bohemian Rhapsody. IMO, their best version of Tie Your Mother was at Wembley 1986 concert. That entire concert was amazing. Thanks for doing this. At the time, Queen broke a record with the amount of fans. Nearly 500,000!!

Thanks for this Rory! I love seeing Queen in South America! FYI: Queen performed in Brazil the first time in 1981. At that time, they were one of only a few British bands which played South America due to political unrest and coups in those countries. (Queen didn't headline Roc in Rio in '81- I'm not sure who did. I think AC/DC and Rod Stewart - and maybe only a few others - were also on that tour.) However, in 1985, they were selected to headline the Rock in Rio festival for 2 nights - opening on January 11 and closing January 18. They put on great shows both nights! They only returned to England in late January, 1985 and then packed up once again in April, 1985 for 14 concerts in New Zealand (1 show), Australia (8 shows in April), and Japan (5 shows in May). They returned to England later in May, 1985 when the call came in from Bob Geldof asking them to participate in Live Aid in July, 1985. From what I've read, they initially weren't sure if they could participate since it had been a grueling year of tours. This is why they weren't initially put on the program for Live Aid. Bob Geldof eventually persuaded them to perform at Live Aid...they dropped everything to select their set list and rehearse...and, as we know, the rest is history!

4 years before Queen would come to Brazil for the first time. It was the first huge band to do that.

My Live Aid would consist of It's Late, The Prophet's Song, Tie Your Mother Down and Nevermore. I think with those, it gives a full scope of what Queen is capable of. Might add March of the Black Queen and White Queen if time would allow.
