I was 3 years old when my family crossed the North Atlantic in August from England to Canada. I will never forget even as a little one. Hit the tail end of a hurricane on a much smaller ship. Even the purcer and cabin crew were ill. My mother and sister were bedridden. I remember the stairs going up and then going down. My older brother and I wandered the ship freely. I also remember sitting in the children’s dining room watching a pitcher of water sliding all the way down this long table and then it slid all the way back. Crazy that I remember some of it so well even being so young. Later on I became a sailor.

You should absolutely do it! But, I would suggest only on the QM2 in January. The QM2 kinda made it look easy and the video doesn’t really represent what the human eye can see. 1967 I sailed from Montreal to SouthHampton England and had gale force 10 for 3 days, Captain invited me and my uncle to the bridge to watch the massive waves, and returned to New York in February 1968 4 days of rough rough seas aboard the TS Bremen.....I loved every second of it.

As Merchant Seaman on the original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth over a few years in the sixties, been in a all Kinds of weather very tricky when you do 12 hour days of pretty hard work, I would never actually pay to go on Any ship any where EVER…….. Too much of even a good thing could turn into a bad thing. I was in a bad storm on a very small cruise ship. It was exciting and fun, especially that most everybody got seasick except me and the dancers. It happened on lobster night, only about a tenth the normal diners. The waiters would ask me if I wanted some extra lobster tails as so many people were bailing out of the dinning room.

I met a gentleman who served onboard the ocean liner SS United States in the 60s. He said the ship crashed through such a massive wave that the spray went so high over the bow, water came into the forward engine room raining down the funnel. The Atlantic is wicked!

Wikipedia - SS United States is a retired ocean liner built during 1950 and 1951 for United States Lines. She is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, retaining the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952, a title she still holds. The ship was designed by American naval architect William Francis Gibbs and could have been converted into a troopship if required by the Navy in time of war. The ship served as an icon for the nation, transporting numerous celebrities throughout her career between 1952 and 1969. Her design included innovations in steam propulsion, hull form, fire safety, and damage control. Following a financial collapse of United States Lines, she was withdrawn from service in a surprise announcement. The ship has been sold several times since the 1970s, with each new owner trying unsuccessfully to make the liner profitable. Eventually, the ship's fittings were sold at auction, leaving her stripped by 1994. Two years later, she was towed to Philadelphia, where she has remained. Since 2009, the 'SS United States Conservancy' has been raising funds to save the ship. The group purchased her in 2011 and has created several unrealized plans to restore the ship. Due to a rent dispute, she was evicted from her pier in 2024. As no other locations could be found, Okaloosa County, Florida bought her and planned to sink her as the world's largest artificial reef near Destin, Florida by 2026.

We joined Queen Elizabeth for her maiden transatlantic in January 2011. Sailing in tandem with Queen Victoria to New York. The weather was awesome. No snow, but my goodness, the size of the waves! We could see what it was like when we looked across to Queen Victoria. Outside doors were locked, shows were cancelled, but the sight of the seas was just incredible. The height of the waves over the bow of the ship was something to see. Force 10. Best journey ever!

Spent 44 years at sea as an engineer crossed the Atlantic many times, been in Hurricane's, Typhoons no way did the ship hit a 90 foot wave, or every one on board would have felt it.

I can not say if we actually had a 90 foot wave. But we had waves that felt like it could have been. Waves/swells were worse at night and you couldn't see how tall they were. We hit a 56 foot wave on celebrity solstice between New Zealand and Australia in bass straight. The ship hi it at a bad angle. I was in bed. It titled about 35 degrees then uprighted all the mini bar contents fell out and a ham fell down stairs he was at the top of. If I was walking I’d of fallen. It was a dramatic and severe contact with a large super freak wave. All door to the decks were closed for days

I was in the merchant navy 1978 and went through the Bermuda Triangle and the water was like a sheet of glass.When we left Galveston back to Rotterdam we hit the Atlantic we were surfing in 40 feet waves from behind us for 5 days it was amazing.when we went on the Queen Mary in 2014 to New Zealand we went through a couple of force 8 storms and a force 9 in the Bass straight and the ship never moved.

On a QM2 crossing in late April, we met severe storms. My husband was out on our balcony every day with pleasure. The ship glided through it all effortlessly. One highlight: Sitting in the Brittania bar one sunset and watching the waves come up window-high.

Awesome video. These people in the comments need to really stop hitting on cruise ships. I did a TA about a month after you did (Mid - Late Feb 2024). It went from Southampton to Miami on the NCL Joy. While im more of a Caribbean type cruiser, this TA was fantastic. We did the great circle route. There was a huge area of low pressure (hurricane force storm) over the north central Atlantic, east of Newfoundland. We stayed south of the most extreme part, but we still got Beaufort 10 winds, with waves around 35 feet at times. Only thing we missed out on that you guys got was the snow, which being from Michigan I was very happy about. Our great circle route was likely a little more to the south keeping us in the warmer rainy section. I thought the ship handled the storm quite well. This comes from my previous experience of being a former crewmember on a smaller NCL ship that did loops around the Hawaiian Islands. Those winter storms in the Pacific can really knock you around.

No Suprises here! Traveling on Cunard in January embarking in NYC and winter storms are "BAU". Business As Usual. My first experience was in January '89 and the QE2 was on saiing on 45 degree angle. I loved the experience and I do not get motion / sea sickness I ever monitor the weather. I grew up with senior citizen and they were obsessed / snow birds thus I refuse to track it now that I am senior. I'm glad you all were prepared for the weather. I am on week from 10-days in Alaska and I did not need the over coats and rain protective jackets you adorned. Thanks for the shaing your experience. Besides the weather, what were the most interesting and fun events on the ship. This looks like groundhogs day. BTW, Yes, I was able to find and Homer.

I sailed a 47' sailboat from Portsmouth to Detroit in the mid '80s. Took 3 weeks to get just to St. John's in Newfoundland from Ireland. We spent 3 days hove too in 55+knt winds, the waves were huge in the middle of the North Atlantic . Despite the knotmeter indicating forward motion of 1/2 kt we actually went 120 miles backwards . The QE2 sailed right past us heading west just 400 yards abeam of us.

The hubby and I had a VERY bumpy ride in the other direction, from S'ton to NYC back in November 2018 - about 1 day into the voyage and for the following 4-5 days we had what the captain described as "exciting weather" - he wasn't wrong!! Luckily no adverse effects for us, it just made it more of an adventure! QM2 is certainly built for it 😅

Nice vlog of queen mary 2 crossing the atlantic from new york to southampton, i love qm2, god bless this ship n her master (captain/comodo)who operates it with his team of officers, with the engine dept, n safety officer, its the only ocean liner designed for crossing trans atlantic routes from uk to us, vice versa, on very rough weather conditions, i ve crossed atlantic ocean on my favourite ship of p&o cruise ship, mv oriana, and mv aurora and mv arcadia as a crew, during 2007 to 2014.

I love storms while on a cruise! My first cruise was on the Carnival Fascination during Hurricane Katrina. They kept us away from the really rough seas but had one day of rough waters.

Been there, Done that leg a few crossings. We only had 2 big storms.from NY to Southhamptom. I cruised with my late Father who was a WW2 Navy Vet ( RIP). The QM 2 has the best stabilizers and crews. Dad had experienced these seas. He said that his ship or warships didn’t have stabilizers. When hd had to be on deck, he had to use his safety belt to prevent him from being swept overboard. I wasn’t afraid thanks to Dad, Jesus, the QM2 and crew❗️

Have made a number of trips on the North Atlantic with merchant ships in the winter and they have no stabilizers so they can roll a lot, the worst storm was on a trip from the USA to Europe when the sea was 15-30m and the wind was 30 m/s + and we rolled 15-45 degrees for about 7 days

I was at sea for36 years in the UK merchant navy, the ship is well built for any transatlantic weather. I spent years running from New Zealand to Europe on container vessels via the Southern Ocean, now there is bad weather icebergs etc. Trouble is some of these comments are from non seafarers, who with no disrespect are really not knowledgeable to comment on weather wise. The QM2 has everything to cope with bad weather and was built for transatlantic crossing.

I still recall a lovely story about the first of the "Cunarder Queens" the legendary "Queen Mary". Apparently when she was nearing completion in the early 1930's, it was intended that she be named, "Victoria". The directors of "Cunard" had an audience with King George V, at which they intended to ask for permission to name their gigantic new liner after his grandmother. As the audience began, the spokesperson for the directors began by saying, "Your Majesty..It is our wish to name our new liner after England's greatest Queen.. Before they could actually say the chosen name, The King interjected saying, "Thank you, I am sure that my wife(Queen Mary, formerly "Princess May of Teck") will be delighted to have your new vessel named after her...)!..."Fait Accompli.."! So began the Legend of "The Cunarder Queens"..

I’m Scottish, I’ve lived in some remote tropical islands, escaped the horrendous Asian Tsunami In India, Went wale spotting in southern NZ, where they have purpose made boats that are sealed at sea, with only 6 guests they even have a nurse present. When we were in the rough and when we sometimes couldn’t see the sky for waves i soon found out why the nurse was there,, While i was cheering us on like a rollercoaster with my hands in the air hahahahaha,,,, I have many stories I’d love to share

2016 from Southampton to new York, we hit a gale force 10 and the QM2 was on its side. Next day waves as high as the piano bar windows there was not a ripple in my coffee . Stunning ship, no pitching, it's built for speed and just cuts through the waves. Put it on your bucket list. it's a must and so much to do you never get bored

@dilvishpa5776 in the night, it was on its side apparently the biggest sailing ship in the world, according to captain. The next day, it was straight but white horses and waves coming up to the piano bar, and it just cut through the wave. That morning, duty-free shop, all the cabinets had falling over glass everywhere, and the restaurant was in a mess with everything on the floor. When I crossed Herbie Hancock was the main entertainment . Every morning, I got up at 5 am, grabbed a coffee, and sat at the back of the ship to watch the sun come up along with about 30 other guests I got some stunning pictures of it and also rocking up in New York early morning passing the statue of liberty litten up and the sun golwing behind New York. First time I ever did a crossing and would definitely do it again it was brilliant.

I crossed the Atlantic twice as a boy with my parents on this same route in the 1960s. Our January 1969 trip was especially ghastly, as in this video. Several days of vast deep swells and towering breakers. I was very sick. It got so bad that we put in twice, at St John's and Halifax, charming Canadian cities we fell in love with, both unscheduled stops.

Ah, storms in the North Sea. I had a wild crossing in October 1979 on the QE2 from Southhampton to NYC. Wine racks crashing over to the deck, medicine cabinets flying off the bulkheads in the staterooms. Passenger injuries and fierce headaches from the pressure of going up on the huge swells and slamming down into the troughs--days of it. What was I doing? Hanging on for dear life. Memorable indeed.

On the QE2 too years back. Someone messed up in stormy weather. They did not, or did not properly lashed down a lovely grand piano on a stage. It launched off the stage and made a fatal plunge off the stage. Rumour was that insurance would cover it. Ha. Table ware was sliding about. Piles of dishes crashing to the floor.

There is a natural tendency for the less experienced to see/ feel that any kind of weather at sea is greater than it actually is ; it's dramatic, frightening ( for most) and there is nothing to compare it to + there are usually many people quite ill if it really is rough. There's no harm in overestimating the waves.

Ships have been crossing the Atlantic to a 5 day timeble 50 years ago. My fatherwas a plate boy on the Atlantic ( White Star) and talked about walking with one foot on the passageway walls - both sides - it was still a five day voyage.

Jim Sim...try that wheather on a 12000ice breaker when you are 10 years old ..you have to cling on to rails at all angles when allowed on the bridge the sea regularly covers the windows ..eating is a case of chasing your food and getting a spoonfuls when it passes at speed .me and my brother loved every minute of this ..the crew couldn't do enough to make things more exciting mum and dad had a full time job renewing our wet clothes .we went south on small ships and returned on castle line ships The ice breakers were most fun .the big passenger shipshape regulations ..classes ..and organized entertainment were less fun ...

LOVE the english captains announcement. While sailing through a hurricane he says were doing fairly well with 90' foot seas and a few snow flurries while actually the blizzard is upon them. Always the optimizem and stiff upper lip. The english never get excited about anything.

I believe it 100%! It can get pretty serious when at sea and you happen to run into a storm force 10 or above. As you can see in the video we had storm force 10 & 11 around the clock for 72 hours. We had passengers that felt the same way you did. I would say it's pretty normal to feel that way in these types of conditions. But, I must add the QM2 handled the 72 hours very nicely. Sailed in 14’ & 21’ waves on a cruise ship to the Caribbean. It was horrible. People were getting sick, some were injured with the rocking.

Do you remember what ship you were on? It is horrible when you are on a cruise ship in such weather. However, the QM2 experience was amazing cutting right through the storms. We did have passengers who were sick and stayed in doors or in their cabin. If we were in these storms on a cruise ship it's my opinion it would have been way, way worse! Don't know, why so many hate cruise ships. It would be same to hate sports cars, because they are not good in snow storm. Both are completely different types, you can not compare 1:1 them. Both are good in their designed category. I personally never liked ocean liners, as they all looked like hideous cake boxes, except Normandie. She was beauty. This QM2 looks also nice for liner. And I like cruise ships, I think Oasis class is best looking passenger ship of all. But this trip, it seems sailing very slow and waves not so high. Looks more like "normal" storm to me, but this could be fake illusion by camera.

It really can’t be that bad, being allowed on the exposed upper decks means that the captain isn’t concerned about passenger safety, as it is just the normal Atlantic!

I can see how you would think that but, I’m telling you it was definitely bad! A storm force 10 and 11 are very serious storms. It hit us for 3 consecutive days and nights. Many passengers stayed inside, many passengers were sea sick. We put our faith in the vessel, the captain and crew. Thank you for your comments. As a former sea captain Im sad to say that the QM2 can handle much worse than this. The QE2 battled 30m waves and the QE2 is a much more stabile platform. The captains announcements are more due to passenger related issues than ship safety issues.

We were on QM2 during that voyage but from Cape Town to Australia. Our 3rd time on our favourite vessel. Sadly there was no snow left on the decks!! I would not want to be on any other ship/liner in the world during that weather.

Absolutely, 100%! Unequivocally! No other vessel but the QM2! That’s awesome, we were on the same sailing to Perth. We will be sailing the next 4 months to our last continent Antarctica, come along with us on our journey around the world. Hit the subscribe button. Complex weather patterns!!! Hope you packed the dramamine! Choked on a snowflake haha! Snow on a cruise ship might be fun, but I would certainly fall on my a$$. I think on that cruse, would prefer the snow vs sun! Great video!

Chris, the Queen Mary 2 is an Ocean Liner; it doesn't compare to a traditional cruise ship. She handled the storm very well even though some passengers were sea sick and terrified of the conditions. The ship was amazing! If you ever get the chance to cruise over in the dead of winter on QM2 do it. It’s an experience you will never forget. There are many cruise ships.. but there is only one Ocean Liner. If you're not sure of the difference, please ask, I can help.

We were trying to show what some other actual passengers and fans were saying in their own words. Again thank you for your comments and review.
