Heres what inspired me the most out of this story... the sista who got on all fours to lift her sister up. She didnt stand back and say "naw i aint bout to do that". Her MENTALITY was intelligent enough to see the opportunity for all of her people, in this meeting and not just the queen. So she did her part. She helped raise another sista up instead of being jealous, hatin, tearing her down or leaving her hanging. Thats a true warrior and a real woman. ...note taken. 👍

You like Japonese Culture? I like it too. Do you know the relation between Portuguese and Japan in 16th Century? Portuguese didn't go to Africa to enslave people. Portuguese were traders and decided to bypass the Muslim Turquish-Ottoman Empire that had controlled all Spice Trading in the Mediterranean Sea by 1450. Asian Spices were a big thing in that Era. They were sold mostly in the Mediterranean Sea's Costal territories (South Italy, Greece, Turkey, etc). So Portugal decided to bypass them and sail to the Source of the Asian Spices. India. It took almost 100 years (1415-1498) to get to India 'cause no one was able to sail around South Africa. That cape's waters, rocks, currents destroyed hundreads of boats and killed thousands of people. Vasco da Gama finally figured it out in 1498 and reached India. Goa (India) became a Portuguese State/TradePort from 1510 to 1961. Mallaca (Malasya) also from 1517 to 1641. In 1517 Portuguese reached China and made a trading Alliance with the Ming Dinasty and that's how Macau became a Portuguese State/TradePort from 1557 to 1999. In 1543 Portuguese landed in Japan and made a Trading Alliance with Japan that is celebrated to this day. We built the Port of Nagazaki in 1557. The same USA was so kind to Nuclear Bomb. What about that truth!? Now USA and Japan are Allies. We also introduced Tempura in Japonese Cuisine. They made it globally known. Creepy fact... Japonese traded Japonese Slaves for Portuguese Weapons during the Invasions of Korea in 1592 - 1597. Mostly concubines that were taken to Macau. Portuguese State in China. Truth will set you free if you're not biased when looking at History 'cause every ancient Civilizations conquered territories to eachother in an Era where there were no concepts of Continents nor Countries.

You'd be enslaved by her. Queen Nzinga (a.k.a. Ana de Sousa after converted to Christianity by Portuguese) allied with the Portuguese, enslaved and sold millions of slaves from weeker tribes around her kingdom in the regions that became known as The Portuguese Kingdom of Kongo (Angola e Congo). Afterwards betrayed the Portuguese and allied with Dutch Kingdom again for her own interest, wealth and power. Slavery existed in every Civilization. It was business. I was searching for great individuals for a project I'm working on when I stumbled across Queen Nzinga/Njinga. I was excited to include her, but there are some troubling facts that I've come across: "Increasing slave exports from Nzinga's domains gave her the means to build armies that ranged widely and expanded the resurrected Matamba kingdom until it ranked as the largest state in the region during the 1640s. Much of her strategy was directed at diverting slaves from surrounding regions into Matamba." The Journal of African History, page 210, last paragraph. "Avoiding the Portuguese axis leading to Luanda, she attacked westward through the lands of the Ndembu, the southern Kongo chiefs in the highlands between Matamba and the sea, and contacted the Dutch slavers who were becoming increasingly frequent visitors to the bays and inlets north of the Portuguese capital during the 1630s." The Journal of African History, page 211, middle paragraph. "When other Dutch forces drove the Portuguese out of Luanda in 1641 in a remote episode of the European Thirty Years War, they removed the last Portuguese restraint on Matamba's commercial and political domination of the Mbundu. They were to reap rewards in the form of slaves bought from Nzinga through the 1640s. the Dutch reported purchases of up to 13,000 in some years." The Journal of African History, page 211, middle paragraph. "The Dutch departure from Angola therefore necessitated a rapprochement with the Portuguese. Her nearly twenty-five years of implacable hostility dissolved after 1650 in a subservience that became the cornerstone of her diplomacy until the end of her life in 1663." The Journal of African History, page 212, top paragraph. ""The terms of the agreement assured Nzinga a monopoly over slave exports by concentrating the trade at a feira at her capital; the presence of Portuguese allies, traders and a resident representative of the governor, at the heart of the kingdom further consolidated her internal control. She committed herself in addition to send an annual tribute in slaves and to provide military assistance to the Portuguese when required." The Journal of African History, page 212, middle paragraph. You can read the journal here, but it might cost you if you don't have a subscription to JSTOR: www-jstor-org.hal.weber.edu/stable/180812?seq=11#metadata_info_tab_contents I suppose if we celebrate people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson who owned slaves then we can also celebrate people who sold slaves. Maybe I'm missing something here but this is my understanding of her: She fought Portuguese slave traders in her youth only to establish herself as a slave trader who exported even more slaves than the previous ruler allowed. In the end, she allied with the Dutch to help kick out the Portuguese until the Dutch left and she was forced to ally herself with the Portuguese again, this time owning a monopoly on the slave trade in her region. Any thoughts on what the journal reports compared to what the video says?

She took the slaves as refugees. She didn't keep them as slaves but instead gave them freedom. She fought slavery harder than anyone. I'm not going to read the rest of your comment because it's way too long.
@TBOTSS3 жыл бұрын
@@PraiseTheFSMonster She was selling 25,000 slaves a year to the Dutch. Her Kingdom's wealth came from the capture, use and selling of slaves. She herself was the daughter of a slave. She murdered her nephew, when he was still a child. The Portuguese aligned more with the other Kingdoms (Kongo for example) who were major competitors with Njinga Mbande's people for slaves. She did NOTHING to stop or reduce the slave trade, she only wanted to exclude the Portuguese from the local trade. Like all African nations, she NEVER argued against the trade but for who should control it (meaning herself). EDUCATION 101.
@@PraiseTheFSMonster Some of what I said is contained in the post above by TEFL hero above, in which you replied "I'm not going to read the rest of your comment because it's way too long." You one ignorant human being.

Um, so why is her showing off how she subjegates and objectifies her own people the main event of the video? Why not elaborate on how great of a warrior queen she was in her victories instead of trying to show us an example of her ability to negotiate which ends up being no such thing and is instead an example of her pride and ego being more important than her handmaid? I'm not saying she was all bad, because honestly this is the first I've ever heard of her, but this introduction screams, "TYRANT" even if she really was a sort of hero. I sincerely hope this is just the BBC being twisted wokies instead of also being another evil historical figure being painted as good for actions that are at least concerningly objectionable.

@@brixcosmo Interesting. Yes, practically every civilization in history had slavery, and I already new of the Muslim slave trade being extensive, but not about those background details. Thanks.
@brixcosmo Жыл бұрын
@@calebwalters1869 It was as extensive as it was Muslim spreading throughout Africa and Europe. Turquish-Ottoman enslaved "white" women from North Europe for their harems too. Turquish-Ottoman and Umayyad Caliphate together bought Millions of slaves from Africa. Much more than the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Turquish-Ottoman bought them from the North Coast without really entering territories. "European" Empires from the South with the same modus-operandi 'cause in the early voyages thousands died because of Malaria. Africans were kind of Imune to it. "Arabs" from the East. It still happens to this day in Sudan. Mostly women traficked for sexual slavering. We can't look at this Eras like everyone wasn't Medieval/Primitive when compared to the last centuries. Nor take sides. "Muslim" vs "Christians". "Middle-Eastern" vs "Europeans". "Europeans" vs "Africans" and so on so on. Everyone F***ed up. Everything must be put into context. Everyone was slave, enslaver, conquerer and conquered, etc. Not always Civilizations spreaded conquering. Phoenicians came from Lebanon to Egypt to trade and were integrated peacefully much before they settled in Carthage and founded the Carthaginian Empire. There's parts of the History of Portugal that i as an inclusive person can't be proud obviously but have to put it into context. But the Portugal i was born in 1980 was always a multiethnic and multicultural where no one refers to People by their skin color like in USA for example. That for us is insainly racist but it's normalized there by every Ethnic/Cultural groups. USA even disclose that in IDs which for us is self-inflicted segregation. It is what it is. I understand that the origin of that grouping/labelling was also fighting for the rights of different ethnic/cultural groups. In the other hand i guess if they all call themselves only American and stop refering to eachother by skin color that would help to create equality. Like Morgan Freeman once said about how you stop racism. Maybe that's nahive to think or maybe like things are today that would be seen for some groups as washing their ancestors culture.
