While I can resonate with some part of your script, I feel you were disingenuous talking about Africans not being a part of the slave trade. Every African empire was built on the backs of slaves, and in our interactions with the foreigners, we traded them off for the items they produced. At the feverish peak of the global slave trade, Africans were kidnapping one another and selling them off to slavery. That was the story of Queen Nzinga of Matamba and Ndongo, Joseph Cinque, and many more. You need not infuse lies in your story to make Africa look even more victimized. It's already apparent what the colonialists did.

I don't think he was trying to claim slavery was not a part of pre-colonial african society, just that it was not the same kind of extreme racialized slavery of the atlantic slave trade, and that trying to conflate the two by simply saying "well black people enslaved other black people too" is fairly disingenuous. Of course all empires did and do employ slavery of some kind or another.

Having grown up in Africa, I can testify that my (previously held) racial inferiority thoughts were rooted from other black people around me telling me whites are more superior. We were raised by our black parents who themselves never experienced slavery or such, that whites were more important, thence we had to watch our conduct towards them. And how we address them was to be different and submissive towards white people. And like you said, its an idea that has gradually dissipated, but its residual effects still linger. For instance here in Zimbabwe, the Shona slang word to refer to your Boss is MURUNGU, which directly translates to WHITE PERSON, and we even use MURUNGU on the blackest of Bosses lol...I have to say, I have no internalized or outwardly expressed hate or malice towards white people, I love them just as much as I love my fellow black brothers cause to me, race doesn't matter, you just have to be a good person. The dark contenent idea is largely due to the fact that despite having more people and thus inter tribal conflict, they never developed technology. For example at 2:16 the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge were built 2,000 BC You can say Africa had tech but no one is arguing that. The opening of this video is very odd. You seem to be forgiving or provide an out for the African tribes that captured and sold slaves just because they were a different culture of African tribe. The trouble with trying to separate the tribes into different cultures back then is that the modern western world does not do that. With many movements broadly stating "black lives" or "people of color", which groups all black people together regardless of their origin, and this allows anyone to do the same, including when they we talk about the past when some groups enslaved others and sold those slaves to Europeans. There are some great and fascinating African civilizations without a doubt, however most of the well known ones can't be separated from slavery, like pretty much all civilizations from the past.

And unlike the "black people sold their own kind" is trying to suggest, they did not view these cultures as their own, they viewed them as "other", and being born into a world where being the strongest and most dominant meant the best chances of survival, they enslaved echother. Americans treated black slaves worse than their livestock, as they were seen as vile, not human, or not worthy to be considered human because of their skin colour. There was a hatred and anger towards them, hence the atrocious and torturous acts of cruelty, and hence the enjoyment many slave owners took from inflicting pain and torture. African tribes enslaving eachother was merely just animals fighting for their and their offsprings success and survival. Americans enslaving black people was about racism. That's why it's problematic and disingenuous to say "black people sold their own kind into slavery". As someone pointed out earlier, it's like somebody explaining the holocaust as white people committing genocide on white people. It's a misleading oversimplification of what actually happened.

I would like to hear HomeTeamHistory and Thomas Sowell (senior fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution) discuss the disingenuous idea that black people sold other black people into slavery. Slavery was an acceptable institution throughout most of human history, and Africa was no exception. Long before the Europeans on the west cost and Arabs of the east cost arrived Africans were fighting each other and taking slaves from each other. In this regard their history was no different than the rest of the world. Neither the Europeans or the Arabs traded exclusively in African slaves. The Arabs were particularly fond of light skinned slaves. The native American nations (tribes) were highly advanced for the time and fought each other and took slaves from each other well before the European settlers arrived. The plight of Africans as slaves in American and the African slave trade is in no way unique to history.

The Sahara slave trade said to have traded 16- 28 million Africans, for which they were immediately castrated… Mansa Musa used slaves to mine gold and salt and he gained his entire wealth due to slavery. He took 12,000 slaves with him to Mecca as well as bags of gold and 60,000 men as a means to promote his strength and wealth. It led people to Africa, for which they themselves wrote about and saw slaves as a critical part of African culture, which people documented earlier than Mansa Musa’s time. Dahomey literally fell to the French in part, because they refused to end slavery. They fought to hold onto it as long as possible. The British were the first country to actually wage war against slavery of black Africans being transported across the Atlantic…for which many sailors lost their lives. Demand doesn’t work if there is no supply. That supply was ample and already pre-rounded up. But if it makes you feel better by lying to yourself and others…do you.

I've had meetings with my high school History Teachers and Social Studies teacher why are we only learning about Martin Luther King whom I named my son after. Why do we learn of the KKK in school and not the Black Panthers a white teacher said the Black Panthers were short lived!! I grew up in a pretty racist place where in school I was a part of black population that was less than 1 percent. I would be be called a ninja any day then they would try talk to me cuz I use to be extremely light skin you could see the veins in the side of my head. I was almost raped one night he offered rides then one day the guy jumped out to attempt me to force me in the car then my mom came with my big Dog Apollo. It was night time I was taking a driver's class. There was always something going on. My drawn out point is they told us our African History is too extensive they didn't have time to learn all of our history. So they taught about mostly peaceful black people except Malcolm one of my son's name sake's. Not the center if your video, but that first point you make makes no logical sense: “Black people did not sell black people because they identified with their cultural and linguistic group”. That doesn’t make them any less black. By that logic, Europeans (who cannot be referred to as Europeans as they mostly identified by their cultural, linguistic groups and particularly national boundaries - hence the many wars and subsequent subjugation between them) never enslaved black people as it was especially West Central Africans and Senegambians they targeted. This has been the standard in American schools for pretty much the entire history of education. In the Caribbean students are taught Caribbean history first, with the Europeans clearly illustrated as invaders and the Africans clearly drawn as captive and eventually freed immigrants. The teaching of American history should start with the Native tribes and move out from there for a full context, with the wider world history - not just European - brought in.

The truth is most western Europeans were the slaves of the world. The romans enslaved them, then when Rome fell. they enslaved each other, then the ottoman empire enslaved 1.5 million west Europeans and sent them to north Africa and 2.5 million Slavs . European pirates raided them to be slaves. Yes, their own people. Basically they were the slaves of the romans, then each other and the ottoman empire from 1bc to 1800. Roughly 1800 years. Western Europeans were first mentioned as the Germanics barbarians along the Rhine by the romans in 1bc. The Germanics were forest dwelling people (like jungle people). They didn't create much of a civilization. That's why they are usually excavating other countries and peoples and hardly their own. Thats why the british museum ancient artifacts are non british, french, germany etc. Don't see why it's that bad seeing that they did form civilizations afterwards and were behind the age of technology. I am married to a royal tribe member of the Yorubas. In West Africa, the Royal Tribe of Oyedele (Oye means Prince) .....to their shame, the ancestors did in fact gather fellow Africans who had been either taken as prisoners from territorial wars, or kidnapped by renegade African gangs to get a share of the lucrative trade opportunities. The ship would come into port in Badagry and they would trade goods for slaves. It is perposterous to believe that some slave ship workers would be able to navigate inland into the interior to kidnap random Africans. The Dutch or Portuguese would never survive the interior and villages of West Africa. Malaria, titsi fly and other diseases and parasites would kill the, if the heat could not. Maybe, this is an American propaganda piece to keep Black Americans enslaved mentally to the mindset of victimization.

It's no secret the African continent is a fundamental part of human history, we've found out so much in the modern age and there probably lots more to discover. Africa was home to some of the most advanced civilizations in the ancient world as well as one of the first universities ever established, which was located in Timbuktu (Mali) during the medieval period. There really is a rich and interesting history of culture in Africa that, for some reason, is not widely taught. Many misconceptions also, as you mentioned.

Earlier in your video, you claim that the west “lied” about these cultural facts etc. Ironically, you found out about such insights from western sources. So is it a lie from the west, or from certain sources of the west? It would be disingenuous to accuse a collective society for “lying” about Africa. In the beginning you insinuate that it is disingenuous to claim that blacks did enslave blacks, since race wasn’t a factor in these times, however there is a reason why historians emphasise on these races. Given the fact that most people have the myopic view that the institution of slavery was only forced on blacks, from white people. If you are serious about truth, your video would include the fact that the majority of slaves in the new world were sent to Brazil. The sources of these slaves came from Angola and Congo, sold to the Portuguese from the Imbangala and other African tribes in exchange for advanced European weaponry etc. Where did those African tribes get these slaves from? Successfully raiding other tribes, with the advantage of new military technology from the Portuguese. Ignore confirmation bias when doing research in the future. Great video though👍🏽.

It is disengenuous. Yes, slavery was a practice, but it’s just like he said, never based on racial stuff, and more as a market and a consequence of war, not so different from other peoples’ perspective on slavery up to that point. Europeans were pretry much responsible not just for using religious justifications for enslaving and dehumanizing africans, but for creating a market so large around slavery that entire kingdoms were created for (and later coerced by europeans) maintaining it. The fact that slavery was already being practiced does not justify or absolve the europeans. It’s much bigger than just the buying and selling of bodies, to a proportion never even concieved up to that point.

I meant to add the fact that African genocides are mainly committed using machetes because at times the militias can't equip every member with AKs or guns. This is the horrible truth about inner turmoil in Africa since the beginning of its history. If you know people who lived through a genocide, they'll tell you how they remember seeing other tribes falling into their tribes with machetes and chopping everyone up, limb from limb, the children were no exception.
