I love the way that journalists reviewing the Queen catalog always give 'Hot Space' a hammering saying it was the worst Queen LP. This is total bullshit for 'Hot Space' is a very entertaining LP with Freddie's voice at it's peak. Put 'Hot Space' up against most new debut albums by new bands and it will blow them away. Queen were about entertainment and 'Hot Space' is a great LP. I can't even find a bad track on it. Cool Cat? What? With Deacon's superb sounding bass and Freddie's Diana Ross impersonation it's a joy all to itself. Just try listen to it without trying to sing along in falsetto! :) Okay, when people say 'limp white funk', listen, Queen were not trying to be Earth Wind & Fire. They continued the sparse sound that was present on the 'The Game' and fleshed it out with some synth-bass and catchy hooks. If they had continued with their heavier classic rock sound it would probably have been the death of the LP. Queen were always in a state of flux, most 70s LPs of theirs have little gems of songs that cannot be classified too easily, a bit like The Beatles I guess. The 80s was the synth decade and Queen were subtle with it's use on 'Hot Space'. You can still hear the Taylor/Deacon powerhouse rhythm machine under the great tracks on 'Hot Space'. It's a five star blazer! Listen and rock like a mother! Journalists hate bands that are great like Queen and try to pick holes in their canon all the time. I said this before, even a bad Queen song sounds great because of Freddie's vocal. He was a perfectionist with impeccable taste and he put his heart and soul into every vocal he ever did. I like LPs that I can listen to from start to finish and 'Hot Space' is one of them. Most modern bands LPs hardly ever give me this opportunity with only two or three standout tracks. What do I think of 'Hot Space'? Now that's entertainment!

i’m not the hugest hot space fan, or of really any 80s queen stuff, i’m very partial to the 70s records but i’m pretty sure the only reason people hate hot space is because they’re thinking of it in terms of queen’s usual style, they’re thinking of it in terms of rock music when that isnt the genre of the record. if you look at it as a stand alone project it isn’t bad at all.
@cristhapaz96595 жыл бұрын
The album is perfect!!! All the songs. People didnt know about diversity....
@liliano42865 жыл бұрын
Right! I've always thought that what people don't realize (or maybe they do but they don't say it) is that 70s and 80s England and America at the time was so prejudiced in so many ways (they still are but it was worse back then). I have always thought that affected so much of the reception of Queen albums. Rock was seen as "white music" and disco was seen as "black music" (or "gay" or "liberal white music") in countries like England (which was very xenophobic at the time towards Indians and blacks especially) and in America (where racism was even higher than now esp in music tastes), it's not surprising so many people didn't give Hot Space the chance it deserved. Queen's fan base (at least at the time) had traditionally been very white, very heterosexual and not at all liberal minded (changing now thankfully). I think those factors are all evident in the way Hot Space was received, and also the reactions to Freddie's moustache look and also in just the way the media always seemed to target Freddie compared to Brian and Roger. Freddie wasn't married, Brian and Roger were, yet no one really go on their case about their extramarital activities and rockstar shenanigans; Freddie seemed to get the worst of it. Part of it I'm sure was simply because Freddie was the front man and the most visible and he also lived his life free and didn't care about pleasing the media or anyone for that matter. But I've always suspected that a large part of it also had to do with just basic plain old xenophobia (Freddie's British Indian heritage), homophobia and racism. But of course, that's not something people will like to acknowledge even today. Hot Space was just "a problem" because a band that was seen as "white" was doing music that was seen as black, and people were not open or broadminded enough to appreciate the diversity of the music. Thank god Queen had Freddie and John Deacon, they really added so much more flavor and variety to the musical influences for the band.

@@liliano4286 You are an expert on the subject, I admire you! Sonya Hollis Drugs, sexual identity issues for Freddie, marital problems with the band members and their wives, and also just band disagreements over what direction Queen was going in with Hot Space. Queen is a cut above the rest. Anyone who can't see is blind, deaf or an idiot. Real music comprehension demands a break from the mold of mediocrity or the familiarity of mid shallow pool of stagnancy where it seems safe but a sure death to growth & adventure. Queen proved they can carry out any style of greatness in sound but not everyone can comprehend it & no other band has carried out that stamp of greatness to be able to do it- any genre by a band that sounds really goooood.

Kinda surprising that such a dire situation produced such an enjoyable album. There, I said it. I do understand Queen is a hardrock band first and foremost, but they had so many more tricks up their sleeves and Hot Space I think is, next to Innuendo, their most versatile album. Paul Prenter really seems like the devil in disguise. Freddie was going through a painful breakup at the time and Paul seems to have taken advantage of that, getting a free pass on things over Freddie’s back before showing his true colours around Live Aid.

Question: why did Queen record so many of their 80's albums at Musicland Studios in Munich when they had their own studio in Montreux? As can be seen in this video, Musicland gave the band the creeps. It literally was in the basement of a large hotel. They even recorded most of "The Works" in Los Angeles....why not use your own studio???

They naively thought that Munich could do for them musically what Berlin did for Bowie in the 70's....being holed up in the basement of a sleazy hotel could inspire in some weird way....you heard Brian May....Freddie surrounded himself with all the vices he needed to get away from reality while the other three sank into a deep depression being away from their families, knowing that this LP was gonna be the shits and possibly the end of their careers...because their frontman had become so lost and delusional from the drugs and the parasites But really the crux of the matter was burn out which all successful bands encounter. The things mentioned above just accentuated. After The Game they should have taken time off and then come back refreshed for The Works...Hot Space was a bad experimental phase

Does anyone know what the footage at 5:15 is from? I've been coming back to this clip for years and I think it's a shot of John playing a telecaster. Most likely for Cool Cat?

I actually really enjoy five of the songs from Hot Space: Staying Power, Body Language, Calling All Girls, Life is Real, and Under Pressure. It's unfortunate that Roger and Brian seem to be embarrassed by it! (Okay, Cool Cat I get...lol)
