I love the way that journalists reviewing the Queen catalog always give 'Hot Space' a hammering saying it was the worst Queen LP. This is total bullshit for 'Hot Space' is a very entertaining LP with Freddie's voice at it's peak. Put 'Hot Space' up against most new debut albums by new bands and it will blow them away. Queen were about entertainment and 'Hot Space' is a great LP. I can't even find a bad track on it. Cool Cat? What? With Deacon's superb sounding bass and Freddie's Diana Ross impersonation it's a joy all to itself. Just try listen to it without trying to sing along in falsetto! :) Okay, when people say 'limp white funk', listen, Queen were not trying to be Earth Wind & Fire. They continued the sparse sound that was present on the 'The Game' and fleshed it out with some synth-bass and catchy hooks. If they had continued with their heavier classic rock sound it would probably have been the death of the LP. Queen were always in a state of flux, most 70s LPs of theirs have little gems of songs that cannot be classified too easily, a bit like The Beatles I guess. The 80s was the synth decade and Queen were subtle with it's use on 'Hot Space'. You can still hear the Taylor/Deacon powerhouse rhythm machine under the great tracks on 'Hot Space'. It's a five star blazer! Listen and rock like a mother! Journalists hate bands that are great like Queen and try to pick holes in their canon all the time. I said this before, even a bad Queen song sounds great because of Freddie's vocal. He was a perfectionist with impeccable taste and he put his heart and soul into every vocal he ever did. I like LPs that I can listen to from start to finish and 'Hot Space' is one of them. Most modern bands LPs hardly ever give me this opportunity with only two or three standout tracks. What do I think of 'Hot Space'? Now that's entertainment!

No matter what people say, even what band itself says, I really like "Hot Space". Michael Jackson once admitted that this album partially inspired "Thriller" (he and Freddie were friends at the time of it's making). Therefore i think it's mercilessly unjust to consider "Thriller" to be one of the best albums ever made and "Hot Space" - a flop. Some people sometimes think that if a band is considered 'rock' they should play rock only and everything else they play is rubbish. That's unfair.

That's something I especially learned from the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody". It was meant, as I think Brian and Roger often said in interviews, as a kind of tribute to what Freddie was as a man and what he was as a member of Queen. He was beloved. Seeing the movie (I won't even admit to how many times I've seen it) and lots of clips on KZbin, I've learned so much about each and every member of Queen! Even more respect came with that knowledge and I know it's just what's been put on a screen, large or small. Some, I can sift out if it's clearlly daft opinion. It's been great to get to know the strengths and weaknesses of these men and I'm grateful for it - thank you!

The entire band has, at various different stages, before and after Freddie's death, acknolwedged themselves that Freddie was not just "the glue that kept them all together" (quote from Brian and Roger), but most significantly, that Freddie's songs and his musical creations are / were responsible for the group's success in those difficult initial span of years, from 73-79/80. That was the key time when it was make or break and if not for Freddie's hits, the band has said on numerous occasions that they wouldn't have made it. That's why people see Freddie as Queen. I mean it's not the only reason, clearly, but the fact that the band has always acknowledged these factors is the reason people see Queen = Freddie Mercury. Also, Roger has stated that "It was Freddie who instilled in us the belief that we had to make people gasp every time", which I mean, no gasps = no Queen really, that's Queen's motto right there. So it makes sense to me that the person responsible for all of that--for making sure the band stayed together, making sure arguments didn't get out of hand, making sure they always put on a good show, that they committed to going above and beyond on everything, costumes, quality etc-- WOULD be considered to be the soul or leader of the band.

Hot Space isn’t a bad album per se but I think it’s failure commercially was down to a number of factors...they were burnt out coming straight off The Game which was a huge success and automatically their record company put them under pressure (no pun intended) to follow that up...Mercury was at the height of his drug use, throwing those insane parties and hanging out with bad people like Paul Prenter, their toxic influence no doubt bleeding over into the studio and polluting the work environment, encouraged disobedience....and the location they chose to record in, the basement of a hotel in Munich where people go to kill themselves...I’ve listened to all of Queens albums and with this one you can straight away sense a collaborative disconnect....

Sonya Hollis Drugs, sexual identity issues for Freddie, marital problems with the band members and their wives, and also just band disagreements over what direction Queen was going in with Hot Space. Brian and the band were all very private about personal matters and respected each other’s privacy, which is a big reason why they stayed together as a band from start to end.

Mack seemed to be straight up and honest which is what you would expect from a German , he rightly identified Paul Prenter as problematic as did the band ( minus Freddie) in fact Ratty ( JOhn and Freddie's roadie ) wrote a book called " unseen Queen" and Mack is quoted as saying the book is " very accurate" " i was there"

John: *in studio, doodling funky tune on bass* Roger: cmon John we already did disco on our Bites the Dust song. Let’s go back to rock now ok? John: You wrote “Fun It” Roger: yeah that’s different cuz I wrote it. No really though, disco is NOT our forte. Let’s leave it to the cool African American artists John: so you’re saying you can only make funk music if you’re African? Roger: oh no Freddie: *kicks down door* Roger: what have I done Freddie: ✨ LET’S GO DARLINGS 🕺 _1 stressful album later_ Freddie: *shows Hot Space to rest of band* look dears I made this Brian: *at Roger* this is all your fault

Right! I've always thought that what people don't realize (or maybe they do but they don't say it) is that 70s and 80s England and America at the time was so prejudiced in so many ways (they still are but it was worse back then). I have always thought that affected so much of the reception of Queen albums. Rock was seen as "white music" and disco was seen as "black music" (or "gay" or "liberal white music") in countries like England (which was very xenophobic at the time towards Indians and blacks especially) and in America (where racism was even higher than now esp in music tastes), it's not surprising so many people didn't give Hot Space the chance it deserved. Queen's fan base (at least at the time) had traditionally been very white, very heterosexual and not at all liberal minded (changing now thankfully). I think those factors are all evident in the way Hot Space was received, and also the reactions to Freddie's moustache look and also in just the way the media always seemed to target Freddie compared to Brian and Roger. Freddie wasn't married, Brian and Roger were, yet no one really go on their case about their extramarital activities and rockstar shenanigans; Freddie seemed to get the worst of it. Part of it I'm sure was simply because Freddie was the front man and the most visible and he also lived his life free and didn't care about pleasing the media or anyone for that matter. But I've always suspected that a large part of it also had to do with just basic plain old xenophobia (Freddie's British Indian heritage), homophobia and racism. But of course, that's not something people will like to acknowledge even today. Hot Space was just "a problem" because a band that was seen as "white" was doing music that was seen as black, and people were not open or broadminded enough to appreciate the diversity of the music. Thank god Queen had Freddie and John Deacon, they really added so much more flavor and variety to the musical influences for the band.

@@liliano4286 You are an expert on the subject, I admire you! I think the prejudices still continue and hurts for the people who could not admire it at the moment they launched it, every song of that album is art! He has a lot of freedom in sounds and as always innovating! That's Queen! Changing for the better, perfecting and giving to humanity the diversity that you struggle to find in various musicians and you find it in THEY !!!

I love Hot Space, and for me it's better than The Works, The Miracle or Innuendo (personal choice, don't shoot me :-) I'd love to hear someone mix it and add some heavy Brian guitar to it though, would love to hear "studio" version of how they played them live

Wondered why I hadn't given this a like. Watched its entirety . . . now I know... it's sad - but won't give a dislike. Do think the uncompromising backlash by two of the band took Freddie to realizing he must not discount wanting to offer fresh perspectives of music's competitive and commercial artistry. Yes "Hot Space" is one of my most appreciated CDs.

About at 4:20 Brian said that this Place, the Arabella Building (Hotel and Studio) was depressing. But it was the same Studio for the recording of The Game Album (and the Producer R.Mack was the same Producer). So same Place - and wonderful City of Munich - and now it´s grim and depressing?

Kinda surprising that such a dire situation produced such an enjoyable album. There, I said it. I do understand Queen is a hardrock band first and foremost, but they had so many more tricks up their sleeves and Hot Space I think is, next to Innuendo, their most versatile album. Paul Prenter really seems like the devil in disguise. Freddie was going through a painful breakup at the time and Paul seems to have taken advantage of that, getting a free pass on things over Freddie’s back before showing his true colours around Live Aid.
