I wouldn't necessarily consider Deaky legendary. Sure, he came up with some good bass lines, but a lot of his stuff is "meh". Now, John Entwistle on the other hand, he was truly a pioneer in bass guitar. People associate fame with skill because they don't know anything about what they're associating. Yes, Deaky was good at what he did. But was he legendary? No.

Daltrey put on a vocal clinic for the ages on "Love Reign O'er Me". Off topic, but one of the awesome moments in my life is the night I was talking to Roger Daltrey at center stage in the front row at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut as Pete introduced and talked about the song "Eminence Front" to everyone else in the audience. While talking to Roger I requested a rare Who song. They played it the next night in Boston!!!!!! Never in my wildest imagination did I think I'd ever affect the setlist of a Who gig. But it happened that night in Boston. The song is "Black Widow's Eyes"!

Roger is just outstanding here. I can't help but feel Roger is actually quite underrated - everyone talks about Pete's songwriting skills, John's bass playing and Keith's drumming, and with good reason as all three are/were incredible. Yet to be honest Roger was the first true Rock God in my opinion who had both powerhouse performance AND vocal skills. I adore Mick Jagger & love his voice but he was never on Roger's level vocally. Robert Plant is also outstanding of course but when you compare Led Zeppelin footage from 1969 to The Who's performance of 'Summertime Blues' at Woodstock that same year Robert was excellent but he didn't have a truly awesome presence (at that point) like Roger had. Roger isn't just a fantastic frontman but also a trailblazing frontman and an integral part of The Who's success, especially from a live point of view which was where they excelled at. He's much, much more than just the singer of Townshends' songs.

This is the right song for the right guy. Daltrey is the poster boy for angry rock and this song is as angry as it comes. Freddie must have been smiling, edging him on "Come on, show them who's boss." a song of unashamed masculinity and being sung by the most masculine performer of them all. Queen's "I want it all" as sung by Roger Daltrey of The Who.
@nhip2508

This is not angry rock. Punk is angry rock and that is when rock went downhill. This is exhuberant rock, the way rock is supposed to be - celebratory. Even metal is not angry.
@RastaSaiyaman
@RastaSaiyaman 5 жыл бұрын
@@nhip2508 Are you kidding me? From the first Rock n Roll records there were songs about being frustrated, angry and having that message of "I'll punch your lights out if you don't listen to what I have to say." - The Crickets "I Fought the law" - Eddy Cochran "Summertime blues" - Link Wray "Rumble" ("Rumble" is fifties slang for a street fight, the only instrumental record to be banned because it was deemed to be too violent.) So after Rock N Roll was sanitized by people like Pat Boone, it took until the mid Sixties until the spirit of Rock N Roll came up again with songs about being frustrated, angry and having that message of "I'll punch your lights out if you don't listen to what I have to say." - The Beatles "You can't do that" - The rolling stones "Satisfaction" - The who "My generation" - MC5 "Kick out the jams" Come the seventies and bands like the Eagles and Boston calmed Rock down, while bands like T-Rex and Kiss blew up the show element and players like Ritchie Blackmore and Keith Emmerson pushed the boundaries with their virtuosity. So when Punk appeared, there again were songs about being frustrated, angry and having that message of "I'll punch your lights out if you don't listen to what I have to say." - Ramones "Blitzkrieg bop" - Sex Pistols "God save the queen" - The Clash "White riot" In fact it was when Pete Townshend met Johnny Rotten and Paul Cook of the Sex pistols and apologized for having become a rock dinosaur, that Rotten said "Not at all, we really love the 'Oo." and assured him that to many punk rockers he was the original pioneer and a hero in the genre. So to return the compliment, Townshend wrote a song about being frustrated, angry and having that message of "I'll punch your lights out if you don't listen to what I have to say." That song was called "Who are you?"

@@RastaSaiyaman You could add Death On Two Legs as well. it doesn't have much of a message but it is angry. It seems somewhat debilitating to apologize for the music you produce to another artist. Of course I understand why he did it, but an artist should stand behind his music. It is interesting to compare that encounter, against the encounter of Sid Vicious and Freddie. He was thrown out of the studio and Queen create Sheer Heart Attack to mock the whole punk movement.
@RastaSaiyaman
@RastaSaiyaman 5 жыл бұрын
@@ZENOBlAmusic That encounter with Sid Vicious wasn't the only run in between Queen and the Sex Pistols. Both bands were in the same studio recording and every single day Johnny Rotten would go "Imma go say hi to Freddie." and everybody would go "Yeah sure you are John." But a few days into the recording session Lydon was MIA and the others were going "Have you seen John?" and when he turned up again and the others asked him what he had been doing he said "I just stopped by and said hi to Freddie." and the others went "Yeah sure you did John..." But then the telephone rang and at the other end was Queen's management who complained that one of the band members had entered the studio where Freddie had been recording, crawled underneath the piano and popped up in front of his face and said "Hi Freddie!"
@RastaSaiyaman
@RastaSaiyaman 5 жыл бұрын
@@ZENOBlAmusic Also, "Death on two legs" DOES have a message and it was directed at Queen's old management who had scammed them out of a lot of money, so Freddie took no prisoners into telling them how he felt.

Roger Daltrey was by far the BEST performer in this tribute. Had the energy, the charisma, and the voice. The crowd and the surviving members of Queen quite liked him. You can see that throughout. And if you listen to the interviews / backstage Rog also had great respect for Freddie. No wonder Elton John, who is a character in and of himself, said that past Mercury the only two great frontmen are Roger Daltrey and Mick Jagger. And if anyone should know it would be Elton. Big names for singers didn't save other performers from being treated quite differently by the surviving members of Queen or the crowd. Robert Plant, David Bowie, George Michael, etc. they were good in their own way but they fell far short. They were all treated second fiddle or as with Robert ignored by Queen. And in the backstage / interviews some merely said what was expected of them... so does that mean they had as much respect.
