It was the middle of the night in Australia (3:30am on the east coast)... I was watching a stream from the UK while flicking around the Australian channels before eventually finding one that switched over from the usual home shopping crud to the BBC feed. It took a little while for them to rush the local breakfast TV presenters to air early. Australia was never part of the rehearsed plans for media announcement in the UK, although our Governor General and PM had been informed by that time.

@@alexholt6810 it was reported that Charles and Anne had made it to Balmoral before she died but that everybody else missed her. That time-stamps it to sometime between midday, when it was reported that they had gone to Balmoral, and 1630 when the PM was reportedly told. The palace statement said that she died on the afternoon. Clearly everybody was going about normal-ish business in the morning then dropped everything to get to Scotland - that doesn't suggest she'd died the day before.
@alexholt6810
@alexholt6810 Жыл бұрын
@@joshuapeckham2453 yeah the palace said she died with her son by her bedside but I think they have said that for national security reasons. If the palace came out and said the queen had died before the important people/sectors were notified then it could course problems. So the palace let the family know give them a chance to arrive at balmoral (hence the announcement about 45 minutes after harry, Andrew, anne etc arrived) , then they let the PM and leader of the opposition know, then they let the authorities know so they can prepare. By the time it has got to the people that need to know the palace then need to give the statement that the queen is unwell so that the public know why the family are all headed to balmoral and why the sudden change in attire for the pm and stamer. Once the statement is out the presenters also change attire as they are notified of operation unicorn. Once the family arrive at balmoral it's safe for the palace to announce her death. If she died in the late afternoon we wont have found out 2 hours later we would have found out at 10pm ghe earliest. Due to procedure there is alot of avenues that the crown has to go through due to national security before they can announce the death formally.

The BBC and ITN's Channel 4 News teams handled it well. ITN's ITV team did poorly: they didn't have the announcement ready even though it was delayed until the time of their main evening bulletin and they have rehearsed this many times. You could hear Mary Nightingale was breathless with nerves though so it's entirely understandable. The informality is expected at Channel 5 and Dan Woods only started there a few weeks ago so probably hasn't rehearsed for this.

I had a similar situation. I am from the US and currently live in the EU, but I am a huge fan of the royal family and am fascinated by the history of it. When we heard the news that she was under medical supervision, I actually texted some of my friends that I thought that meant she would pass away within the day. I may be wrong, but I thought so because it was a statement from the palace which didn’t go into recovery or anything like that but one of seriousness. I wasn’t alive back with King George VI, but I seem to remember that he was terminally ill and yet the public wasn’t necessarily told that… It just seemed that the statement was likely pointing that she was likely going to pass… My mother, who was a physician, actually hypothesized when I called her, that she may already have been gone before it was officially announced and that they were waiting for the family to arrive. It's really good to see how well they broke the news for children. Even as an American, I don't think I'll forget sitting in the car with my 6 year old telling her the news and how she would probably read about that day in her school books in the future.

I am from Hong Kong, and that night i felt very sick because i just tested +ve of covid. I turned on the BBC news online while i was sleeping just tried to get as much news update as possible. And once i heard the God Save the Queen i knew the Queen had passed away. I couldn't stop crying because Her Majesty is a respectful and lovely lady who dedicated herself for the country. I still can't believe it's true until now... God Save the Queen. 🇬🇧🇭🇰

Based on the provided clips, CBBC was actually the best one, in terms of delivering the message and its execution of the announcement. But the BBC News clips were very close in 2nd place. The commercial stations ranged from good to terrible.

If you were expecting her death, as most of us were, you'd be watching BBC. Huw Edwards was superb, I can't fault in any way. There was a lot of delay built in so everyone knew what was happening and everyone could be prepared. By the language used we knew we were preparing for the sad death of Her Majesty. There were a lot of pauses in the announcements and to be fair there was a lot of concealed emotion. I also noticed in the BBC's initial statement made about the Queen's health that the announcer spoke very deliberately, with pauses and appeared quite shocked so we were as prepared as you could be. I agree that the CBBC announcement was really well done for children.

I woke up that morning and it was grey and dark and raining, the wind battering the windows. My mum told me and I turned on the news to see that outside Buckingham it was raining so hard that you could barely hear the reporter. I knew it would happen that day. After she passed there was a beautiful rainbow over Buckingham. England wept for her and celebrated her when she joined her darling Philip. RIP Ma'am❤️

not normally one to watch BBC news except during royal issues. After several hours of no updates, I was disconcerted & upset by the transition from Nicholas Witchell's entirely reasonable "we hope for the best, but fear the worst" to Huw Edwards, just seconds later - with no "news just in" or newsflash forewarning - grimly informing us the Queen had died. Mr. Edwards had rehearsed the announcement repeatedly and it showed - by jarring with the previous moments.
