contains spoilers: so what's really weird is that in the final game Beth plays the opening Queen's Gambit (which she's never really played that much before; she was an E4 player), and the commentator says that Borgov responds with an Albin Counter Gambit although when you look at the board Borgov actually accepts the gambit. also: Beth for me resembles Bobby a lot and the final game really reminded me of Bobby v Spassky game 6 1972 (1. Bobby has a lot of similarities with Beth such as life problems and mental issues 2. USA vs USSR 3. Borgov was reigning champ for a long time just like Spassky 4. the applauding at the end 5. Beth started the game out with something she hasn't really done much before just like Bobby in game 6 & so much more). highly recommend watching Queen's Gambit! pretty accurate chess-wise and it's a really great binge. The final game was also amazing (broken down by agadmator) :)

@@mikekilian4711 Well, the computer of course gives it -50, but if you look at the tablebase you can see that black has to be precise at certain moments with g5 at the right time, all other moves draw and it sometimes comes down to one tempo. Pawn endgames are tricky.

Borgov didn't play the Albin, that was a silly mistake in the use of notation. The Harmon-Borgov Moscow 1969 game was a Queen gambit (unsurprisingly, given the series title) accepted that anticipates and improves on Ivanchuk-Wolff, Biel Interzonal 1993.
@Locutis194 жыл бұрын
No, in the series it is very clear that Borgov declined the gambit and played the Albin counter gambit, even naming it.

@@Locutis19 I did not watch the games According to Agadmator's video their final game began with Queen's Gambit Accepted Are you both talking about different games?
@andream614 жыл бұрын
@@Locutis19 The authors of the series messed up something. As said the game is Ivanchuk-Wolff Biel 1993 and it was a QGD (just google it). The actual game ended in a draw, Beth Harmon "finds" an improvent in white's play after adjurnment that leads to a win for white. Besides nobody--and I mean nobody--plays the Albin at that level and in 1969 this was truer than today.

Right when he said he was playing "very low risk chess" White could have taken his knight, followed by king takes bishop after pawn captures rook. The pawn can't be saved in time, and now they're dead even.
@xeogillis36664 жыл бұрын
5:30 Whit could have gone for Knight d7 taking the bishop, because if you want to equalize again, rook e8 was checkmate. You should move a pawn so the King can escape, yet then you allow a rook to come to the 8th and 7th rank and collect pawns (and a Knight) while the rook of black is still trapped

I think it's pretty easily winning for black, though. The c pawn distracts the white king while the black king can go eat whites pawns. I don't think the black king can make it back in time to save either of them or to capture a black pawn without allowing the other black pawn to break free
