Queen Victoria's 9 Children

The nine children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Since many of you are commenting on the children not smiling, I thought I would tell you the reason here. During this era it was custom for people not to smile in photographs (kind of like how we are not supposed to smile in our passport photos today). Photography also worked differently back then. The exposure time was long which meant that the people had to hold the same expression and sit still for a long period of time. If they didn't they would turn out blurry in the photo. Two examples of this are little Beatrice's left arm in the photo shown at 2:45 , and also, if you look closely to the right of Vicky at 4:41 there is sort of an outline of her which could indicate that she might have moved a little during the exposure time. So it's not just the children of Queen Victoria that looked sad, stiff and gloomy in their pictures. The majority of all the photos taken in the 19th centry will show people not smiling. Smiling in photos became more common in the early 20th century.
Because of this "no-smiling-in-photos-thing" I, personally, find it precious when they have slipped a little smile. If you're looking closely you can see some of the children smiling in some of the photos shown in the video (with or without showing their teeth).

Vicki's descendants would come to rule Germany and Spain, Yugoslavia and Greece, Berties descendants would come to rule England and Norway, Alices's ruled Russia, Alfred's would be Yugoslavia and Romania. Arthur and Leopold's together would come to rule Sweden and Beatrice's descendants would come to rule Spain. I find it all fascinating!

Alice had such sad eyes and always looked like she carried some great burden, even as a child. I read a few things about her and she was apparently very kind and loving, showing great concern for others, regardless of status.

gabe 25 Yes. Alice is said to have been a very kind and caring person, with an enormous heart. She is definitely a favourite of mine. Alice was not the only one in the family who didn’t care for ranks or titles, though. Louise is also said to have not cared about those things. According to the biography I read about Louise, she was very kind and loyal to her servants, giving them gifts and standing up for them. She also didn’t mind if you broke protocol with how you should speak to a royal. In fact, she even insisted on being addressed as an “ordinary” person. However, if someone tried to walk over her she did not hesitate to use her rank. She was feisty, that one.

I personally think that you can sense an enormous and trememdous sadness in all of their eyes It really must have been their greatest burden in life to be born to such a mother,and with all the pressure of royalty and politics.... But yes,especially alice given that she was the most sensible and empathethic child out of the 9.. She really just seemed like such a great and big Person surrounded by the dark bleakness of royalty,and the mental problems of her mother. We often forget that these royals are just people,so its profoundly fascinating and yet sad to learn about their humanly side and life Stories

Hauntingly beautiful and so sad that Victoria's life came to an end when she lost her beloved Albert. I think in a way it shows in the older children's faces that there is a longing for motherly love and although she did love them in her own way, she was not really maternal and her greatest love was of course her husband.

A few of them look like their father, to me. Vicky, Affie and Arthur look the most like Albert, his longer face and stronger German features. Alice, Bertie and Helena look like copies of their mother. The rest look like blends of their parents. But Victoria and Albert did favor(being cousins and all) Victoria just looked more English. They had the same hair and eye color, Albert had a little more curl to his hair. I find them all to be very pretty children.

Of All 9 of her children 3 died before her, Alice,Leopold,and Affie. The ones with the saddest lives were Alice,Leopold,Bertie,and Vicky The one with the happiest life was Arthur. Here is how famous each of her children are 9.Helena, Lenchen is the most underated of Queen Victorias children because she is barely talked about. 8.Arthur, He is underated too, but commanded the canadian army in wwi and lived long enough to see wwii start. 7.Beatrice, Beatrice is known to be the youngest of her children, and the sweetest to victoria,she was the last to die. 6.Alfred, Alfred is known to be the duke of saxe coburg gotha, but died a year before her mother. 5.Leopold, Leopold is my favorite, but his life is tragic. He is known to suffer from haemophilia which lead to his early death. He is in famous birthdays as an Aries Royalty. 4.Alice,Alice would have lived longer if he didnt kiss her son in the cheek. She is also famous for being related to the romanovs.From her daughter,Alix. You can find her in famous birthdays as Taurus Royalty. 3.Louise,She is famous for being mysterious,and being creative.She married someone not royal, and live to be 91. Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837 and was crowned in 1838. In February of 1840 she married the charming and charming Prince Albert who became the consort.They had nine children from 1840 to 1857. But the eldest of the two children had a significant impact on history. Princess Victoria born in 1840 was the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm William II of Germany who started World War One in 1914 and later exiled to Holland. Whereas Bertie born in 1841 was the father of King George V.Bertie became King Edward VII in 1902 and dying in 1910.

Actually they are Hanoverian eyes. Her Grandfather, George III had similar eyes and it has been passed down through the generations. Also remember so much inter-marriage between cousins kind of has kept a similar look for all these people.

Really enjoyed this, and adore the music of Vaughan Williams. The photo of the children playing "campfires" was enchanting. They were most definitely loved... Did anyone else notice that one of the girls, Alice I think, didn't seem to like looking at the camera? Very shy perhaps. This video has made me want to learn more. Thankyou indeed!

Tourbillon 13 Thank you for your nice comment! :) The campfire photo of Louise and Bertie is from when the children preformed a Tableau Vivant for their parents representing the four seasons. Louise and Bertie represented winter, Alice represented spring, Vicky and Arthur (the photo before) represented summer, Affie represented autumn and Lenchen stood on a pedestal which was supposed to be the clouds, dressed in a white robe and holding a big cross in her hand. There is a picture of all seven children in this play but I did not include it in this video. I didn’t think of that. Alice wasn’t that shy. She wasn’t as shy as Beatrice but she wasn’t as outgoing as Louise either. There are some photos of her looking into the camera, but personally I think most of the time the children were told where to look while posing for photos. Some photos are more free and spontaneous, of course, but definitely not all. Also, it was more common to not look into the camera while posing for photos at that time. And third, it might also be my fault for choosing most of those photos where she looks away.😅 There are biographies of each and every child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert that you can read if you are interested about their life and who they were as people. I have only Arthur left to read about but otherwise I have read about them all. It is very interesting indeed!

Rachel Green Leopold was a hemophiliac and died at about thirty. Alice died young, too. Then Victoria’s grandchildren started to die from diseases such as typhus and diphtheria. That must have been horrendous for her and the parents.

when i see victorian era pictures i think how much harder life was then. even the science was cruel. daily life even for monarchs was closer to the stone age. imagine all the horses and horse poop. the flies. the filfth. the stink. you want a glass of milk? drink it before it turns to cottage cheese. tuberculosis was so common, it was a major factor in world affairs. but they were a vigorous people. the desire to live burned brightly in them.

All nine of them 0:08. Vicky the Princess Royal Victoria, looks so very daring to hope here 0:16, before she married and experienced the hostility of Germany due to her being English! Funny, her father had faced the same for being German, and yet he was a first cousin of Victoria and the whole Hanover royal family was German too, which only changed slightly with Alexandra but turned back with Mary the next queen consort after Alexandra. Vicky had an unhappy life, on the whole, her husband died as Kaiser before coronation and never was in charge until too sick, and her son (cousin Willy to his cousins the other grandchildren of Queen Victoria) was much too abrasive to put it mildly. Bertie the upright Prince of Wales 0:30 changes with years, to Bertie the sprightly young Prince of Wales 0:32, to Bertie the chafing at bit Prince of Wales 0:35, to Bertie the slightly frustrated for doing nothing while waiting as Prince of Wales 0:38, to Bertie the by now patient and resigned Edward VII finally 0:41. Alice the delicate one who married into the Hesse and Darmstadt ruling Battenberg relatives and had children who were to go on to have such key positions in the tragic events to come and further, but didn't even survive to see them grow up! Her daughter Vicky, Princess Victoria of Hesse and Darmstadt, married her first cousin Louis Battenberg from the morganatic marriage of her uncle, and was to be the maternal grandmother to Philip via her daughter Alice whose own life was quite sad. Another daughter Ella, Princess Elizabeth of Hesse and Darmstadt married Sergei Romanov, uncle of Tsar to be Nicholas II who married the youngest one Alexandra, and the third daughter Irina married the brother of Kaiser Wilhelm and a cousin - all married their cousins, all married for love. As WWI came, the first casualty was the cutting off of the usual rounds of visits and other constant communications between various siblings and cousins across Europe, especially those living in England - which included the Battenberg clan members - severing connections with relatives in Germany, and then of course the gruesome murders of Ella, Alexandra and her family, and other Romanov cousins and relatives. Mother of Tsar Nicholas II, the dowager Empress Maria Fedorovna who survived, was a sister of Queen Alexandra of England, while grandmother empress Maria Fedorovna was a Battenberg Princess of Hesse and Darmstadt, sister of this Princess Alice's father in law. Alfred 1:06 who married the Tsar's daughter Marie, a cousin through German relatives, thus making a trio of sibling pairs from royals of England, Russia and Denmark who intermarried each other and were three couples, Edward VII and Alexandra, Princess Dagmar 'Maria Fedorovna' and Tsar Alexander II, and Prince Alfred and Princess Marie of Russia. Alfred was duke of Edinburgh 1:16, later Admiral of the Royal Navy at Malta. His daughter Marie was to be Queen of Romania, after her marriage with another German cousin. In August 1893, he inherited the duchy on the death of his childless uncle, Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His wife the Russian princess Marie had, from 1893 until her death, the distinction of being an Imperial Russian grand duchess (by birth), a British royal Duchess (by marriage), and the consort (and later widow) of a German sovereign Duke. Helena 1:34 the good-looking one. Louise 1:41 had the most beautiful tiara especially designed and ordered for her by her husband at the wedding, the Fife tiara, that rivals the Russian and English royal tiaras in beauty and more. Wish the video had included a photograph of her wearing it. Arthur 1:53 - 2:07. Leopold 2:11 - 2:24. Beatrice 2:25 - 2:40 the youngest married another Battenberg who was the younger brother of her niece Victoria's husband (son in law of the then late Princess alice who was her sister), and a first cousin of the Hesse and Darmstadt cousins. These intermarriage of the various royal clans of Europe, not only amongst cousins but across generations and often with a sister marrying the nephew of a brother in law or an aunt marrying the younger brother of her sister's son in law, not to mention several intermarriage generation to generation so that people are simultaneously first cousins, second cousins, and more, are hard to keep track of without a 3D graph with multicolour threads to define relationships! All five daughters of Victoria 2:43 - 2:48, and 2:48 - 2:52 all four sons. The sons together are all grown, while the daughters together are various ages, perhaps because once they began to marry and disperse across Europe and get busy with their own families, it was difficult to get them together in such a photograph. If one didn't know, this could be any relatively well off family of the time 3:10 - 3:18! This 3:35 is titled Leopold, Louise and Arthur - but obviously they are standing behind, with the group seated in front including their mother, the presumably new sister in law Alexandra, and a few of the grandchildren of Queen Victoria. Alice and Bertie 3:51 - Alice the great-grandmother of Philip with Bertie the great-grandfather of Elizabeth, the current royal couple descended from Queen Victoria through these two siblings. Bertie and Alfred 3:55 - the father in law of the younger one was the Tsar, and found it inappropriate that his daughter took second place at various English royal events from everyday dinner to more elaborate events such as weddings, the first place after the Queen being given to the Princess of Wales Alexandra who was Princess from Denmark, tiny compared to his Russia. Louise and Helena 4:00 - 4:06, quite a transformation here from sullen little girls to pleasant, lovely young women! Without more information this one at 4:12 - 4:16 titled Vicky and Beatrice is slightly confusing, because Vicky here looking so young couldn't be the first daughter of Queen Victoria, is this Vicky the Princess of Hesse and Darmstadt the daughter of Alice, making this the photograph of two women who were aunt and niece before Beatrice married the niece's brother in law, making them sisters in law? At 4:18 - 4:23 though, Beatrice does look younger, but not by much, so the confusion stays. Alice and Vicky here 4:37 - 4:51 are presumably daughters of Queen Victoria, both unhappy in their life in different ways, their children and grandchildren going on to play major roles in events to come! Nice 6:19. Before WWI, of course! Wonder how often they met after the war.

Jyotsna Gokhale They are definitely Vicky and Beatrice (eldest and youngest daughters of Queen V) at 4:12-4:23. Vicky would be approximately in her late 30’s or early 40’s in those photos, while Beatrice was somewhere in her 20’s. Beatrice also grew taller than Vicky (not by much but still). Personally, in my own opinion, I think one can clearly see Beatrice looked relatively young in those photos. Just compare the structure of her face to the photo at 2:37 when she was in her 30’s. I think she looks more mature there. 😊

Lovely and so right to have Vaughan Williams' music playing so English (albeit that Victoria''s mother was German and her husband (who was also her first cousin) was also German. It was quite a strict family upbringing but they were able to give a good example of family coherence in a very traditional Victorian way which probably ultimately was to the good of the nation. She was one of the first people to use anaesthetic to help with the pain of childbirth.

I always thought that the hemophilia that appeared in many royal families had its origin in Victoria. The most notable of these was the son of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Of course, that may not be true, but it seems likely. Her children were married to royal families all over the place!

What is amazing is that she was the 5th Queen Regnant of England, after Mary I, Elizabeth I, Mary II, and Anne and yet the first to produce an heir, only Anne had a child, who died at 11 before his mother died. Both Mary I and II were succeeded by their younger sisters and Elizabeth I and Anne were succeeded by distant cousins, James I and George I, descended from prior Kings' daughters, thus the change in the Royal family name.

Kinda scares me how my mom named me after queen Victoria and nearly all the significant people in my life have names that correspond to those of the people (like children )that where part of queen Victoria's life...idk seems a bit of a stretch but I just think that it really is true when they say that when u name someone after someone else they carry that significance of the person that they were named after and the name itself, I'm just using myself as an example, I just thought it was cool to share idk

Shadante Smalls - it is a disease that stops the blood from clotting meaning that even a small injury can be fatal. It is caused by a gene mutation. Usually only male suffer from the disease but females can carry the gene and pass it on to their sons. Males can also pass it on but back in the 19th and early 20th century the males who had it usually died young. Leopold did pass the gene onto his daughter who was only a year old when he died. She had three children including two boys and both her boys died as a result of the disease. Alice passed the disease onto the Russian royal family as her daughter Alexandra was a carrier. Alexandra married Nicholas II, the last tsar of Russia and their son, Alexei, had the disease. Because the whole family was murdered the disease did not continue among the Russian Royal family. When their bodies were finally recovered DNA test showed that one of the daughters, probably Anastasia but maybe Marie, was a carrier. It entered the Spanish Royal Family via Beatrice’s daughter, Victoria Eugenia, who married Alphonso XIII of Spain. They had sons with the disease. Also, as Alice and Beatrice both married into the German Royal Family it appeared in some members there as well.

Tourbillon 13 I just finished Victoria the Queen (Baird), an excellent biography that really brings Victoria to light...and Albert. The author waited years to get access to the Victoria and Albert files at the Round Tower, in Windsor. She states why she thinks the RF wanted to keep mum on her burial. She trusted only one person to bury her exactly as she wanted, and that was her physician, Dr. Reid. Well, he had his own files on Victoria, including her burial directive, and all that is still in his family’s vault. The author obtained easy access to that info, and when she presented her final manuscript to the curators at the Round Tower, they told her she could not include the burial information. Despite signing an agreement that she could not impugn any information she obtained at Windsor, she published her book as is, because Reid’s information was with HIS family. I highly recommend the book, because, yes, Victoria HATED being pregnant because she loved sex, and it seemed like every time Albert looked at her, she became pregnant. Albert then took more and more control over her kingdom, and she let him. After all, he was head of the family and having babies was women’s work. Her behavior upon his death is an eye opener. I hope you get a chance to discover that for yourself.

The most astounding fact about this family is that all 9 of them lived to adulthood (barely half of babies born in the mid 19th century survived to adulthood, even in wealthy families, and 8 out of the 9 of them went on to have children themselves). Louise, the most beautiful artistic one, remained childless, though rumours swirled about an illegitimate pregnancy, but marrying a homosexual kind of hampered her chances of legitimately procreating. Vicky and Leopold were both highly intelligent and Alice was the embodiment of kindness, gentleness and humility. Arthur was Victoria’s favourite child because he was nice looking (she esteemed good looks even though she lacked them herself) well behaved and very biddable. Helena and Beatrice were worthy enough but dull and Alfred was a raging alcoholic trapped in a loveless marriage. Bertie took everyone by surprise that after a fairly aimless, dissolute life, lived in his mother’s shadow, he had a short but successful reign and was a very popular king.
