Queens of the Stone Age - "In Times New Roman..." ALBUM REVIEW

We're doing our first regular channel album review and listening pow-wow with new Queens of the Stone Age record, "In Times New Roman..."
Its their first record since releasing the Mark Ronson produced album "Villains" in 2017; an album that polarized fans and critics with its questionable production.
Josh Homme and co must have known they had gotten off track with their last effort while self producing this one, because they are are brought it back to basics. Even though its not the catchiest in their catalog, the heavy guitars, goofy riffs, ripping bass lines and tight drumming featured on "In Times New Roman" is enough to bring you back for multiple listens.

You guys should really revisit Era Vulgaris. I relistened to every album through the past month. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I also really enjoyed Lullabies more than I remembered. Great work.

I've seen a lot of people say that, it was bugging me what I thought was missing so I did some research and josh always done what was "wrong" with mixing and his guitar playing and mark is going by the book, my ear tells me some of the songs just sound like they were made in a vacuum

I thought paper machete was a beautiful song, the lyrics are a straight diss track to his ex. I think for some reason people don't realize this like stop and go stuff he does on the guitar he's always done, he's never just strummed the shit out of the guitar it's always had a unique funk to it even no one knows

Reda Maher yeah I feel like if u don't like a lot of this album then you probably weren't a fan of era vulgaris/like clockwork, I really like this album its like experimental and weird yet mature songwriting

Honestly shocked that straight jacket fitting was actually someone’s least favorite. By far the best track on the album for me and I thought that acoustic instrumental the last few mins was a great way to close the album

Homme's monologue with the galloping bass and guitar riff in the middle of the song, then the acoustic outro is just magical. I really do like Emotion Sickness for the chorus but straight jacket fitting is certainly the best piece of art on the album

Great job guys! I agree, they fit their entire discography into this album. Also sneaking in some new techniques. With Villains and arguably Era Vulgaris... they didn't leave obvious breadcrumbs for old school fans to follow. Which is why those two albums are so polarizing. A lot of folks also missed that Era's job was setting you up for Like Clockwork and the whole Wendy Carlos vibes it brought. I love this new album. I love the Bowie and David Byrne vibes. I also love that everyone got to shine on this one. They all left their marks. Great record! I don't really know of many bands that still put up quality work on the 8th album. I think some of their best work is on here.

“Run Like a Rabbit”; in Made to Parade is Jim Morrison reference; the Soft Parade check the circus vibe on this Doors album; Organ is a direct reference to the Stranglers Something Better Change … and other songs on Rattus Norvcicus; Bowie sounds; and best lead guitar solo at conclusion.
