Damn...I was about to say that no metal concept album touches it. Then I read a few more comments...but yes, Abigail is def one that ranks right up there too, but if you combine the actual album, commercial success, and the tour then Mindcrime is probably the best. Also one of the greatest concerts I've seen. Saw them twice that year. They opened for Metallica on the Justice tour. Metallica already played a min of 3 hrs back then, but you had that and Queensryche playing the entire album, from start to finish, as the opening act. Good, good times.

Exactly. Listen enough, and Mindcrime feels part of you. At that point, you discover that the EOAS radio version--what she reviewed--feels very abrupt, like it's missing the richest dimension of what the Ryche is offering through this masterpiece. (Her intuition was spot on, that it felt like there should have been more to the song.) It'd be delightful to her her take on this same song after getting to know the story. Operation: Mindcrime is a front to back masterpiece. Fates Warning is also one of the godfathers of prog metal. I got into both bands around the same time in the 80's and I fell in love with the genre back then. The intricacies, time changes and mix of classical elements were huge for me as a kid. Back when listening to music for hours and buying albums was an activity to loose yourself and take a trip. Geoff Tate in the '80s, '90s and even early 2000s was unstoppable. There was nothing he couldn't do. His voice has aged a little over the years, but having seen him live a few times in the past few years, he's still one of the best vocalists out there.

Just to echo others, Operation: Mindcrime is a masterpiece. This version of Eyes was the made for MTV version. The original is longer that has a climax at the end.
@AndrewD33823 жыл бұрын
The climax at the end on the album version is one of my favorite album closers ever. The culmination of all the rehashed thematic elements ending with that final sound effect (won't spoil it for those who haven't heard it yet) just blasted me out of my chair when I first heard it, and it still gives me chills. So much better than the abrupt fade out. "I remember now."

“It sound like he’s in some sort of mental institution.” Yep. The album starts and ends in a mental hospital. Operation: Mindcrime is an absolute masterpiece both musically and lyrically and possibly the greatest concept album ever written. Geoff Tate’s vocals carry so much emotion throughout the album. I saw them years ago on the Operation: Livecrime tour where they played the album front to back and it was amazing. I still listen to the CD regularly and I urge you to find a copy, not “Live at the Moore” which is good but Operation: Livecrime is better in my opinion. It’s a magnificent performance by the entire band but Tate’s vocals are just phenomenal throughout.

She makes several references to the lyrics here. Coming from a concept album you can't look at the lyrics strictly from this song but need to look at them in the context of the whole album. The lines about him looking into the mirror and staring into the eyes of a stranger are about him not recognizing himself as he remembers everything he did in the story. The line "rosary wrapped around your throat" is a reference to an earlier song where he finds Sister Mary hanging. The character in the story is definitely tortured.

This entire album Operation: Mindcrime, from beginning to ending is truly a wonderful experience. Many people probably have suggested that you listen the whole thing. Do yourself a favor. This album has been out for decades its message is as poignant today as it was then. Eyes of a Stranger is the final song of the cyclical story of how protagonist ended up in that hospital. I watch enough of your videos to know you love stories. And Geoff Tate is playing the main character of a tragic love story. Also, Operation: Livecrime their release of the entire album live. I still have the VHS and CD of Operation: Livecrome box set on my Bookshelf. lol. i don't have a VHS or cd player anymore :) This album has been on my list since I was a child driving to mountains with my uncle. As my understanding of the story and message increased as I got older I liked it that much more. Do yourself a favor, nerd out, you will not regret it. edit:spelling

Operation: Mindcrime is a complete story, start to finish. Essentially you are “starting” with the final chapter, so the institution might seem out of context for the song. I’d highly suggest giving the entire album a listen to appreciate the fantastic story (as well as the phenomenal music and vocals). This truly is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest concept albums ever made, and I’m a Rush fan, but this one album turned me into a Queensryche fan for life. I became a loyal member of their “Empire” fan club and saw them about 15 times live, including backstage meets with the band. Absolutely one of the best bands in my book.

Completely agree. While every song on the album is great as a stand alone song... to fully appreciate each song, it should be listened to in its entirety. Hands down the best concept album ever, in my opinion. A whole album review would be awesome, but I would really like to see something from MTV Unplugged reviewed. Since it's a live acoustic performance, she can get a really good dose of Tate's vocal abilities without too much production added. Though from the 3 songs she's reviewed, I can tell she picks up on all the glorious expression and nuances that make his voice one of the purest and best in rock/metal.

My thought is that once TCV has reacted to and analyzed whatever other songs from this album, that Elizabeth would love the whole thing and might consider at least listening to it straight through. It really is a masterpiece of metal and music in general. (Edit to add suggestions for the next TCV Queensrÿche reaction & analysis): I'd like to suggest that for TCV's next Queensrÿche song, head over to the _Rage For Order_ album, and check out "Neue Regel" or "Screaming In Digital" … although, TBH, I would watch Elizabeth geek out about Geoff's voice on any Queensrÿche song, so there's that 😂

Seeing them perform the whole album live back in the day is still one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.

That was great. It was interesting in that it took the popularity of Silent Lucidity from Empire for them to have the ability to do the whole Mindcrime album. I think it was a shock to some of the new fans at the concert.

My husband saw this tour and it still burns me with jealousy...even though it was years before I ever met him lol

Stand out concerts in my memory too - I had the joy of seeing Mindcrime performed live not once, but twice. Off the scale.

I sincerely appreciate how you seem like you have never heard these songs before. Growing up listening to this music, I guess I forget this was a little before your time. Geoff Tate has one of the best voices in all of music.

As said below, the vocal layering may be part Chris deGarmo (the guitarist with the hat in the video and one of the major songwriters in the band). Certainly live he added quite a bit of backing vocals and not always the lower ones - he may not have been as good as Tate, but few are. As far as follow up suggestions go, I think you will love Suite Sister Mary from this album, but I am going to recommend Della Brown from their Unplugged session - slow, low, warm vocals with a message as meaningful today as it was in 1990.

I know this comment is buried under many other comments but the entire Operation: Mindcrime album is a must listen. It tells a story that will give you another perspective on this video. The stories they tell on Operation: Mindcrime are a provocative time capsule of 80s and 90s political, religious and pop culture. Some of the songs could be written today with just a few minor tweaks. An entire album breakdown would be fun and I'm sure everyone would watch but at least listen to it on your own time. The entire band is so good and the album really is a journey.

This song changed my life as a teenager, in terms of music. It took hold of me in 1988 and I never looked back. I saw the video and I just didn't understand why everyone didn't love them. He was at his peak in the late 80s.

Mr. Tate has always been one of my favorite singers. He is truly awesome, in my humble opinion. "Silent Lucidity" is my all time favorite.
