Maverick is named Maverick because he is a wild card that flaunts authority as stated in the first movie. One of the saddest parts about that scene with Iceman, is that they added the actual reality that Val Kilmer cannot speak anymore due to a similar condition. They used an AI voice to overlay into his lines when he forces himself to actually speak. I don't think I know of another movie that has immortalized an actor into a role by taking their real-life health issues into a sequel when they chose to not just replace them with another actor. This was a very heavy scene knowing the background of it.

They actually brought in Val’s son to dub in his lines and mixed it in w A.I, they couldn’t have handled that any better than they did imo.. apparently Tom told the studio that he wouldn’t do this sequel if they only showed pics n flashbacks of Ice Man like they originally planned to do, he told them that they either include an appearance w Val or he will not play Maverick again, he’s a legend man and that just adds to his legacy for me, whatever u think about his personal beliefs u can’t deny the guy is a class act

I know its not as good as this, but in the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot from 2019 Kevin Smith literally had Val Kilmer play his Silent Bob character in scenes specifically written for him as he couldn't speak, it was awesome. I met him at Awesomcon here in D.C. and hit him with a line from Willow, he smiled from ear to ear and whispered "That's beautiful to hear man!"

My grandpa and I always shared a connection because we bonded over a love for fighter jets and military aviation. The original Top Gun was always one of our favorites to watch together. He was aircraft maintenance for the US Air Force and was why I chose to join. Unfortunately he passed away before this movie came out but when I saw the P-51 in this movie I bawled like a baby because that was his single favorite plane ever. I watched this movie with my grandma and we both cried together at the final scene knowing how much he would have loved this movie. What was kind of sad about the character arc of Maverick is no reference to his father Duke Mitchell who s disappeared over enemy lines and the incident was covered up. It’s the core reason why Maverick on flies on the edge the way he does and would be more the reason why he over pushed Mach 10 than the memory of Goose haunting him. Remember Goose told Maverick, “It’s like you are chasing a ghost. Makes me nervous.”

I think one of the great things about this sequel, and about Tom Cruise, is that he made sure that he was the butt of all of the jokes. Like he wasn't so egotistical that he could never look like the fool, it was the opposite, at every possible moment, he made himself the fool in this movie. He made almost everyone else (except his students of course) seem wiser than him. But at the same time he was the butt of every "old man" joke in the movie.

The plane they are working on in Mav's hanger actually belongs to Tom Cruise and he is the actual pilot flying it at the end of the movie. He and this plane is rated for acrobatics. He fell in love with flying after Top Gun so he went out and got his pilot's liscense, and continued to upgrade his ratings over the years. You can watch several KZbin videos of Tom flying this plane with various people on board.

I’ve been in U.S. Naval aviation for over 26-years and am still in it on the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet platforms and have to say they did a great job with the aviation accuracies in this movie (Cine Jet did an amazing job with the in flight photography!) I was an F-14 A/D Tomcat guy in the 90s and I have to say that the F-14 start up sequence (when Mav and Rooster stole it) was spot on with regard to the huffer, power and pulling the ground locks and missile safety pins. Also, I’m assuming the reason Rooster couldn’t eject them was because they never showed him or Mav pulling the ejection seat safety pins. Phenomenal movie. I’ve seen it countless times at home and twice in the theater. Thanks for the reaction video.

Former Navy Petty Officer here, just wanted to give some context and clarification for some of the questions you had. (Adding some from the last Top Gun movie too) In my experience, Navy ships don't have A/C. There are, however, vents to keep air circulating through the ship. You need those because some of the compartments are watertight and the air can get thin with the doors closed. It DOES get hot as HELL in certain areas of the world though, especially the Indian Ocean/Arabian Gulf where most of my deployments were. There are also very limited windows on Navy ships, mostly for operational safety. Usually only the bridge (where the ships controls and the Officer of the Deck/command crew operate), the Island, (where flight operations are controlled from) and the Battle Bridge (an area in the forward part of the ship below the flight deck that can be used as a secondary control area if the Bridge is unusable) But in wartime windows can be a liability because light can give away your position and also, in the event of an attack, they can let water into the ship (which is bad) The area of the ship where they're in the blue light is called the Combat Information Center, it's the operational center of the ship where most of the radar tracking equipment is, on my ship it was directly behind the bridge (where I worked as a Navigator/Quartermaster) and the Operational Specialists that work there SWEAR those blue lights steal your soul. XD The stuff they fire from the back of the planes in the missile scene after they take out the target are called flares, they confuse heat-seeking missiles and can cause them to break the target lock on the plane and explode a safe distance away. Also the "headgear guys" are the flight deck crew, each color vest signifies a different job. Yellow: Aircraft handling officers, plane directors, and catapult and arresting gear officers. These are the people that run the show. Brown: ‘Air wing’ plane captains and air wing line leading petty officers. So, pilots/helicopter aircrew. Blue: Directed by those who wear yellow, to operate aircraft elevators and tractors. Green: The crew who maintain catapult and arresting gear and hook runners. The most difficult and dangerous job on deck. Red: The crew handling the planes’ weapons by moving, mounting and arming the plane. Purple: Fueling and de-fueling planes, a dangerous procedure because of the hot engines and explosives on the planes. White: Quality and safety observers, medical crew members and inspectors. Also used for miscellaneous personnel like media officers. Usually you can tell who is who because medical crew wear white headgear with a green cross on the headgear/vest. Hopefully this helps answer some of the questions you had, and I'd be happy to answer any other Navy-related questions anyone has.

Just wanted to add, I was with the wing in the Marine Corps, and we also used that headgear, the flight deck helmet, or otherwise known as the cranial. It’s basically a piece of cloth with two protective plastic shells, and provisions for either ear protective cups or a headset which allowed you to connect to a radio or aircraft for communication with the pilot/aircrew. I get that on a carrier flight deck, there are a lot of moving parts and that it’s super dangerous, but I always thought it was kinda silly that we were required to wear the cranial even though we were on shore, especially since I was on KC-130s. Our Air Force counterparts don’t have such a thing as cranials and aren’t required to wear any such thing when working on aircraft. I know, I was also aircrew on C-130s in the Air Force. Apparently, the Navy is fielding a new cranial system for Marine Corps aviation maintainers. Just found out by searching cranials. It is called HGU-98/P, and def looks way better than that old style cranial.

Top Gun was the first full adult movie I watched when I was 6 years old. My dad was watching it in the living room and I was just wandering in when the intro was rolling, then Danger Zone kicked in and I spent the next 1½ hours on the couch next to him. The day after, I got a little F-14 Tomcat model. This summer, 26 years later, I took my dad to one of the last Drive-in movie theaters left in Denmark. From the moment we heard that note of the theme during the Paramount logo, it hit me right in the heart and it felt like the movie was doing cpr on me for the rest of the evening.

FYI, as for the different colored uniforms on the deck of the aircraft carrier, they correspond to different roles on deck. Green is maintenance, yellow is directing and supervising, blue is handling aircraft and heavy equipment, red is weapons, and the purple guys (known as grapes) are fuel. There's also brown and white. My dad was naval aviation for near 25 years, two tours on a carrier. Fun fact, the opening scene with the Darkstar experimental plane was filmed at Naval Air Station China Lake, where we lived for a few years, so it was cool to see the base and buildings which I myself have been in.

Watching this was such a cool experience of nostalgia. They had so many call backs but it was still a great movie by itself and the fact they actually put the actors in real fighters made it so cool. Also Mach 1 is the speed of sound (about 770 miles per hour) so Mach 10 is 7672.69mph. So yea, Mav was scooting in the 1st scene. And like you said, the F-14 Tomcat was the plane from the 1st movie, the Navy retired them in the early 2000's and the F-18 Hornet and Super Hornet that they flew in this movie took over. Now they added even newer models. So glad you enjoyed both of them!

the reason the movie switches aspect ratio is because certain scenes are shot in IMAX, imax has a 1.89:1 aspect ratio whereas the rest of the movie has a 2.39:1 aspect ratio
@nowayjose6386
@nowayjose6386 Жыл бұрын
The reason those scenes were shot in IMAX was for the closeups of the pilots and dogfights to be shown on the iMAX screen, drawing the viewer into and emphasizing the combat, putting us into the action.

In reality those scenes were not shot in IMAX, ie 70mm film run horizontally through the camera, but rather an IMAX "compatible" Sony Venice digital cinema camera. A real IMAX camera could never fit in the cockpit of an f-18.

@@AtomicAgePictures yeah the term IMAX has really been watered down by these digital cinema cameras imo. But the point that the aspect ratio changes cause these scenes are "IMAX" still stands

@@madrid_seu agreed although some digital cinema cameras, mainly the Black Magic 12k are reaching the resolution of IMAX. I'm just not a big fan of the squareish aspect ratio. I much prefer 2.40:1. The IMAX ratio is a step backwards in my opinion. I saw this film on a 75 foot cinemascope screen, and the wide image filling your peripheral vision is at least as engrossing, if not more, than a square IMAX screen. I'm also not a big fan of changing aspect ratios in the middle of a film. I find it distracting. The only film I can think of where it was done well and served the story was Galaxy Quest.

I was 12 years old on opening weekend of the original Top Gun. I will never forget the experience of seeing that movie in theaters. For weeks after, every boy in school wanted to join the Navy and be an Aviator. We were all buddying up with our BFFs and pledging to be pilot/copilot together... 36 years later, I was once again in the theater on opening weekend for Top Gun: Maverick. And yes, somewhere in between I had followed my dream and joined the Navy.

What did the writers have against Rooster to kill off Meg Ryan's character? Like you said throughout this review. It's to make parallels to Maverick who lost HIS mom after his dad died saving 3 other pilots in his F-4. I'm sure that Maverick's mom made the same request to a superior officer to not let Mav fly.

Some fun facts about this awesome movie: All of the actors for the pilots went through intense training to handle the G-forces in a fighter jet. Each of them rode in the back of an F-18 and had to man their cameras on their own! The roof popping up when Darkstar took off was actually REAL. The plane we see Maverick working on at the beginning and end of the movie is Tom Cruise's personally owned P-51 Mustang, which he flies and works on himself.

The enemy advanced fighter in question in the film is the Su-57. It is a 5th gen fighter where the F-14 is an early 4th Gen with the FA-18 is a late 4th gen being the F-14 replacement for the Navy. Aircraft like the Su-57 have advanced throttle controls that is computer controlled by the planes AI that allow it to make maneuvers like what we saw in the dogfight to dodge the missle. Mav with his experience as a pilot showed him doing a manual split throttle of his F-14 engines to allow him to make a tighter turn. This puts actual weight behind the saying "It's not the plane, its the pilot" reference in a rare case a movie doesn't just tell us but actually shows us to make the scene more memorable.

OOOOOOHHH, that plane they were flying in the start of the movie (where Maverick had to wear a space suit,) was called the Lockheed/Martin SR-71 Blackbird. It’s capable of speeds up to 2200mph (three times the speed of sound,) and CAN get up to altitudes of 85,000 feet above sea level (hence the need for a space suit.) That particular plane is actually REALLY old. Its primary mission capabilities were reconnaissance, rather than combat. But it still had countermeasure capabilities like chaff and flare. It was decomissioned a good long while ago, though.

You asked some questions- Chaff is a radar countermeasure consisting of thin strips of aluminum metalized glass fiber or plastic. It's designed to confuse the enemy's radar tracking of its target so they can't get a lock on aircraft. The crew of the aircraft carrier wear color-coded uniforms so that they can instantly be recognized in a high noise and crowded environment. Sailors operating the catapult and arresting gear wear green, fuel handlers wear red and sailors responsible for the movement of aircraft on deck wear yellow. As for the California terrain simulating the enemy terrain, Maverick and the others are flying using an electronic program. They can practice the mission on a flat piece of land because the profile of the terrain is being generated electronically. I hope this helps.

Cool fact for you, the reason why the flight deck crew on an aircraft carrier wear different colored jerseys is so that you can instantly tell what their role is because they all have specific jobs. Yellow: This color is worn by aircraft directors. They are responsible for the safe movement of aircraft on the flight deck and inside the hanger bay of the ship. It’s also the color worn by catapult and arresting gear officers. Green: They maintain the catapult that launches the aircraft and the arresting gear that helps aircraft land on the ship. Green is also worn by air wing maintenance personnel who work directly with the aircraft, as well as cargo handling personnel, ground support equipment mechanics, and helicopter landing signal personnel. Blue: This color is worn by aircraft handlers. They work under the direction of the Yellow Jerseys assisting them move aircraft around the deck. They operate the massive aircraft elevators on the ship, they drive the tractors and forklifts, and they work as messengers. Purple: They are known affectionately as “Grapes.” These personnel are responsible for fueling the aircraft on the ship. Red: They are responsible for moving and loading weapons to the aircraft such as bombs and missiles. This color is also worn by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) crews, and crash and salvage teams who handle firefighting duties. Brown: These are plane captains. They are responsible for the safety and integrity of the aircraft. The plane captains oversee the maintenance of the aircraft, they prep the aircraft for flight, and handle post-flight operations. White: These are safety, quality control, and medical personnel. They do final checks of the aircraft and catapult before launch off the flight deck and they inspect the arresting gear for quality assurance. This color is also worn by the Landing Signal Officers (LSO) who help talk down landing aircraft and ensure the flight deck is clear for their arrival, and Air Transfer Officers who are responsible for the handling of cargo and personnel from transport aircraft.

A lot of people compare Hangman to Iceman, but even in the theater I noticed the stark difference. Hangman has one kill to his name and thinks he's god's gift to the cockpit. His skill is very very good, but he's bombastic and irritating about it, lacking patience. His ego trumps it all. Iceman really was as good as he believed he was. He was calm and cool and technically proficient in his flying. He'd have made an excellent test pilot with his skill and precision. He was so good that he held off five enemy fighters in a completely defensive position for over seven minutes (realistically speaking, not script) until Mav could get there and save him. THAT is something that Hangman would never be able to do without a serious ego check and study effort. Antagonist he may be, but he's not like the Iceman.

Also, as I try to point this out when I catch it: You even caught and reacted to Penny's noticing Mav's emotional state outside the bar after he was thrown "overboard." Most reactions skip that shot, which is an unfortunate oversight of one of the clearest indicators of the connection between Penny and Mav. Also also, most people likely wouldn't've complained about some swimwear equality on the beach either, but I feel like Monica Barbaro and the actress playing Halo (who wasn't mentioned and had no speaking parts, but was one of the recalled graduates) might have had a few things to say about that. 🤣

So for the story: yes the F14 is the plane from the first movie. What is historically really cool is that the USA stopped using them in 2006 (which is a long time, says a lot on how it was good!). All of them were stripped down of all major components before going to museums because the only other country still flying F14 is Iran. Iran was an ally when they purchased the planes, but the political situation changed. Stripping down US F14 was to make sure no spare parts would reach Iran and their fleet would not fly. That is why there is no chances to see one flying in the US. That makes this scene even more cool! (and yes, you do need a landing gear to land! 😋)

43:18 The terrain is virtual/simulated only, after the real place the mission will take place at. They are in the middle of the "desert", the only reason we as the audience can "see" it is for dramatic effect, Maverick only sees flat sand. If I understood your question correctly. :)

It was a special moment taking my dad to this for Father's Day. We both loved it, just like we did when he took me to the original. 🛩🛩🛩🛩
