Quest 3 Alternative - Pico 4 Ultra Headset For Sale - But We Can't Have It

A Quest 3 alternative is hitting soon - The Pico 4 Ultra, and it will not be for sale in the United States? Why is that, and what is this headset? Is it a Quest 3 killer that everyone but those in America will be able to have? What are the specs of the Pico 4 Ultra headset, and how do they compare to the Quest 2 and Quest 3? Should you try to get your hands on one of these new PICO headsets, even if you have to get it through other means?

Also I am pissed Meta did not include a digital display port on their quest 3. That would have been best for everyone. PC gaming is their roots. We are the trailblazers.

Yes, that would be a good addition, but wondering how much that would have increased cost and such, and maybe that's largely why they opted not to. But, having that option would be a good thing, I agree. Maybe the quest 4, if they go higher-end (which I suspect they won't) might have it included. Along with the Pancake lenses again. It will honestly be hard to own a headset going forward that does not have pancake lenses, so I hope they do at least that going forward... thanks for the comment!

for the people who underestimate the 12 gig vs 8 gig... think about a Windows laptop with 8gig or 16 gig memory... yep. speed change or not ? same with VR headsets. If game designers make good use of the extra 4 gig mem of the Pico, games will be much better on pico than on Quest 3. 4 gig extra texture memory.... nice.

That is a definite improvement over the Quest 3 - while I use mine MOSTLY for PCVR, which makes the RAM not nearly as important, I've not noticed native games booting slowly, but comparison with the PICO would be interesting, for sure. Good point!

China vs USA / Pico vs Meta / Pico 4 Ultra is sold in most European countries, and in the Netherlands it will cost 599 euros. People who buy it in the first weeks will get 2 trackers for free.

Right from the beginning, I can say that it won't be a Quest "Killer", but it is surely a good update from the old Pico4. I like the Quest3 and would not replace it by a Pico4, but I like my Pico4 as well and the next logical step to me was updating it to the Ultra. I'll have it in two weeks... with the extra motion controllers! I live in Thailand and here the Ultra is even cheaper than in Europe! (I'm Dutch)... All in all, that update is cheaper than my Quest3 was. I use insert lenses and can use my old ones with this headset. When I upgraded from the Quest2 to Quest3 I had to get new inserts, and a better head strap, which all set me back over a 100 $. The Pico4 Ultra has an almost identical built like the old Pico4, so no extras needed.

This is great - a real comparison, and I love that you're able to own both PICO and META headsets to see the real differences. And the upgrade to the ULTRA sounds like a natural, if you have the funds to do it. And that is HUGE that you can use the same lens inserts for both. I know with Quest 2 to 3, there was a major change in lenses, going from the Fesnel to Pancake, so that probably made it impossible, but yeah, I had to buy new ones for my Quest 3 as well. Enjoy both headsets, and keep VR-ing!

Good question, and I should elaborate: My experience with them (having briefly owned a Pimax 8k) was that the headset was not very good - didn't deliver at all what was expected - but even more, is their track record for promising product, and never truly finishing them. Now, there's always a chance that will change, and maybe the Crystal Lite (also a beverage from the 70s and 80s) might be there, I've just watched their track record and customer service be terrible over the years. Just my 2-cents-worth. :)

ai t no quest killer 😂 since they used all old optics as justva let down all it has going for it is higher rez passthrew but then it's also not in 3d and then ram also and wifi7 don't mean nothing. I sold my pimax crystal in favour of the q3 lol I tried so hard to like the crystal as I wanted to move away from meta but is what it is I guess

I am there with you - I agree with everything you just said. And while I didn't own the Pimax Crystal, I did briefly own an 8k, and returned it. So far, Quest 3 is my favorite headset I've owned. Valve Index a close second. Loved everything about that headset, other than the fesnel lenses and lower res today. Would love an Index two.... maybe some day!

Yeah, the government there really makes it tough to get behind a produce like the Pico - hard to trust any of the data they will be collecting.
