Nice and very informative video. Every time you say how VR is cool, it warms my heart to see a fellow VR enthusiast enjoying our shared passion 😀. I also did some testing, and here is what I found so far : 1) I bought an external 10000 mA battery that does 20W charging via USB C and at first I was very happy to see that it does not only hold the battery but it even charges the Quest 3 as well. It is small enough that I use some 3D printed mount to put it on the BoboVR strap. Since it worked well, I was planning to buy a second one and hot swap as I need and call it a day. However, I was surprised to see that after around 1 hour, the Quest 3 battery was draining even if it was still plugged and charging with the external battery. I dont have any electrical tools to measure, but what I was thinking is either once the external battery is below a certain charge, it doesn't have enough juice to keep charging the Quest 3 but only slows downg the draining. The other option is some kind of defense mechanism in the Quest 3 software that reduces the charging rate after it reaches a certain temperature. 2) For PCVR with the Quest 2, I was using the official Oculus Link Cable since it was the only one that charged the headset while in use. Unfortunately, this doesn't happen with the Quest 3. I bought a 3rd party cable that you can connect another charger into it while it is plugged in the Quest 3. At first, I tried it with the official charger that came with the Quest 3, and it seemed to work for a few minutes. The headset was charging while in use. However, it happened only once and never again. I decided to buy another USB C charger with a 25W capacity. To my surprise, the same thing happened as with the external battery. When plugged at the beginning, it holds the Quest 3 charge and even increases it. However, after 45 minutes to 1 hour, it starts draining. This makes me think again about a possible charge throttling to protect from overheating. If this is the case, I dont really see any possible solution. 3) For the sound, I bought the Soundcore P10 VR, and they are great. They give a decent sound, stay charged for around 4-5 hours, and they have pass-through charging. However, they dont have data pass-through, so for wired PCVR, I plug them directly into the PC and get the sound that way. I know this is a huge text, but if you have the time and patience to read it, let me know your thoughts 😂

All these third party battery attachments not outputting a proper 18W PD charge is really disappointing because I truly hate that stock headstrap, lol. My forehead will get release when Bobo releases their updated version of the M3 hopefully.

A lot of these companies should have seen this coming. It was well known before hand that the Q3 comes with an 18 watt PD charger. They should have upgraded their batteries to 18 PD (9v/12v) before hand. Good thing is that you don't really need these battery head straps. Just get a 3rd party head strap and put a 20watt PD powerbank in your pocket. This is what I'm doing and its working really well. Able to play for hours without the Q3 internal battery draining at all. $16-$20 can get you a small 10,000 mah 20 watt PD powerbank. Extending your game by 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I ended up getting 2 powerbanks for $32 total and its been working wonderfully. Very compact. just slip it into my pocket. No added weight on the headset aswell. Just use a 4-6 feet cable and your fine.

I've measured my Q3 pulling just over 27W, WHILE in use (plugged into a 40W charger). While it's on standby, it only charges at ~12-14W depending on how charged the battery is. While it's in heavy use, it usually stops charging the battery past ~80%, likely to prevent damaging it due to heat and being at a high charge level (these batteries are most happy between 20 and 80%). If you're above 80% and then start using the headset, as long as you provide enough power to sustain the device, the battery either maintains its charge level or sometimes it will actually drop down to ~80% and stay there.
@rontalley
@rontalley 11 ай бұрын
I purchased a charger that can supply 60 watts. Battery was at 65% and I couldn’t get a charge going past 14 watts. What charger are you using?
@pavichokche
@pavichokche 11 ай бұрын
@@rontalleyIt can really depend on the charger, some like to advertise inflated or inaccurate numbers. What you want to see is the OUTPUT specs per single port (sometimes they show combined output for multiple slots) and you want to see what kinds of voltages and currents the charger supports. Also, it goes without saying, you should seek a PD charger and only use usb C ports and cables. I used an Aohi 40W charger which can do (on a single port) 5V 3A (15W) or 9V 3A (27W) or 12V 3A (36W) or 15V 2.67A (40W) or 20V 2A (40W). The Quest 3 seems to really prefer 12V charging when it can get it, so that's what I usually see with this charger, 12V and about 1-2.25A depending on what's going on. Oh, you should also make sure to be using a decent USB C charging cable, as not ALL are made equal, some smaller flimsy ones might not support enough power. Samsung's stock C-C cables seem to be able to carry 60W, though, so those are good to test with. And again, it might really depend on what you are doing, if the headset is at or above 80% and under use, it might be choosing not to charge the battery and so it won't be pulling too much power from the charger. I have seen using Meta's "OVR Metrics Tool" (look it up on App Lab for the most current v4 version) that indeed the battery just trickle charges usually if the device is in use (not standby). Let me know if you have other questions :D

@@pavichokche this really helped. I’ve been messing around with the new charger and it indeed has been keeping the headset at 100%.
@pavichokche
@pavichokche 11 ай бұрын
@rontalley that's good, but do keep in mind that keeping lithium batteries sitting at 100% is bad for their health. If you have a charger that you can rely on to keep the level steady/topped up, then you should not leave it charging when not in use and just plug it in when you're using it. The headset should charge itself to 80% and maintain it, keeping the battery healthy.

This has been my experience as well, and I'm glad I'm not the only one getting these readings. Lower Q3 battery levels tend to draw more wattage, with equilibrium being found around 70%. This is assuming that the Q3 is powered on. In standby, it holds a steady 12-14W draw like you say (that is whether or not it's on the official dock). Most draw I've seen was around 27W while the battery was low (like 15%-30% remaining), and draw lowers as the Q3 battery level rises. For higher battery levels (above 70%), it hovers around 8-10W draw and can usually maintain just fine. Using the Bobovr headstrap and battery I can do things like Beat Saber/Puzzling Places/Bigscreen/KZbin for easily over an hour without Q3 dropping below 100% I'm using an Imuto Power Cube (PD100) with built-in wattage display for my tests.

ok, the headstrap thing was funny. how long until upsidedown is realized?? I'm sure I've done worse. But so funny. I think for that headstrap to fit the best you have to get the hinge inline or past with the strap part. Then it won't be loose. You have to wear it lower on the back of your head than where you had the bobo. Good job on the testing of charge and discharge rates. All good info and impressions.

This isn’t an issue with third party battery packs. It’s an issue with the quest 3 itself. It won’t take a proper charge from anything. It limits the watts it will take and won’t even take the full 18w. It literally takes days to charge my quest 3 to 100 with a 45 watt charger. That’s unacceptable

I went with the Binbok VR T3. I fits and feels great and also comes with 2 8000mAh batteries. It also comes with a dual battery charger. The batteries are magnetic and fits across the back of the headset over the adjustment dial. You can still use the dial with the battery on. I played Half Life Alyx on Ultra setting earlier today for about an hour and my headset was still at 100% while the battery was about 50%. Keep in mind I still had a second battery fully charged on the charger I could swap out for. I am guessing I could get about 2 hours on just battery life before having to swap out for a full one. The first battery would be fully charged by the time the second one was depleted. I don't really ever seeing myself playing for more than a couple hours at a time anyway.

Just recently got the Bobo head strap for my Quest3. Another issue I've noticed though, is a fair bit of electrical noise when it's charging. Haven't figured out yet if it's actually getting picked up on the speakers, or just hearing it from the charging circuit, but I suspect the speakers. You wouldn't hear it with anything playing, but it's easily noticed if things are quiet.

I have the exact same strap and it's super comfortable for quest 3. The back of the strap it's supposed to be placed at the lower part of your head instead of higher. That's the reason why the top cushion is doing nothing in your case. For mine, it's working well as a support so that even I don't tighten up the strap the headset is still stable like wearing a lose helmet if you know what I mean. Also everyone's eye distance to the top of head is different so it might work better for some folks

HI, I have the same or a very similar headstrap for the Quest 3. it works like a charm for me and it's super comfy. The strap that goes over your head needs to be tight enough to lift some of the weight of the Q3.I also have a boboVR headstrap for the Q2, but without the battery, and that's also comfortable, but I think I actually like the Q3 one a bit better. The battery does indeed give about 4 or 5 hours of playtime, which I hardly ever use in one go (just once to test it). It's acool device for the money, especially with the percentage readout which is really handy. BoboVR will have to produce batteries to go with the Q3, as the Q2 ones are too weak and only give you half an hour extra time. Thanks for your review man! Love the tech geeky stuff :)

Rarely do I post on YT videos, but this was mad entertainin'! I noticed when I used my Quest 2 USB cable with the Quest 3 which was a USB 3.0 to Type-C cable (I use VR strictly with PC) My battery would be done after a solid practice session and race in iRacing, say about an hour and a half. I've literally had the Quest 3 die mid race, which was unfortunate. I decided to connect the dedicated Type C port on my case to my motherboard and got a solid Type-C cable and in my experience, I was able to run multiple practices and races in VR for about 6 hours and still maintained about 67% after it was all said and done. Settings were at 90hz, and all sorts of options tweaked in my Debug tool. Weird that yours is dying after that 5-6 hour mark. Maybe its just dependent on what you're playing? Not sure, but just my 2 cents! Edit: Just saw the end about the faulty cables haha.

They only lit up when I put the charge cable in or turn the Q3 on and then only for about 15 seconds and the lights stay out then. Also my head strap got the same color as the Q3, not a bit more grey, weird. For the fun of it, use your hand palms over the area where the speakers are (with some space between), then the sound get much better, then it sounds like a real headphone, now if they could make some simple thing that would replace your hand palms? shouldn't be hard but the sound improvement is so much better!

I’ve since upgraded my power charger and it’s the key factor. It keeps the Q3 charged and even gain charge over time. It doesn’t keep up if it’s plugged into the MVIIOE. The Q3 will slower loose charge but the MVIIOE will keep its charge. So the Q3 will ultimately run out of juice even if the MVIIOE has some charge left. Thnx for the nice review. I have the elite start with battery and I must say, it works really nice for me. A lot of playtime and first he takes the energy of the external battery and afterwards he goes to the glasses. And the strap fits fine to me. Regards, Ron

Couldnt find Bobo M3 in stock anywhere. Picked up M2 Plus (2 batteries) and 3D printed a Q3 adapter. Works so much better than stock headstrap and much cheaper than Elite strap at $80. When you have 2 batteries you can hot-swap, runtime is not much of an issue anymore.

@@DriftyChickenVR367 It will hold the Q3 at whatever battery level it was at when the Bobo battery was attached until the Bobo battery is drained. Battery life seems improved with the v59 update.

Hey Ron, great video! I have the same headstrap for my Quest 3, just a name branded differently (same type of pad on the top with that top/forehead wider part, and the same back hard piece with 2 piece attachments with velcro padding, and it has the exact dial/knob on the back). I just don't have the added battery pack. It is very comfy and I'm way happy with it. I don't have the battery pack, because I play with PC VR primarily, so I have it wired through USB 3.0. Anyway, great info and video. Also, if you do most of your home stuff via DIY too, it looks amazing. Beautiful kitchen and awesome looking den/mancave. Cheers!

@rontalley It doesn't maintain the charge, BUT in a rough guess (as I haven't tested directly), I would say I get about double the playtime out of the headset...I do keep the brightness about where you mentioned too (about 60%) and I don't use the audio, since I use 2.4Ghz connected wireless headphones to my PC. However, I just learned about (through MRTV channel new video, I think a day or so ago) that there is a 3rd party link type cable that will plug into the wall to provide extra power and the data portion continues to work, of course, and basically keeps up the charge. I'm kinda interested in that...but as much as I get out of my current setup, it's enough playtime for the time I get out of it, so that I don't get too carried away and playing ALL night :) My go-to game is Contractors, and it's hard to stop playing until my battery dies....LOL. So I already play quite a long time when I do get on and play.

You've found exactly what I've found, only I've also found bobo batteries aren't doing after 30 mins, when used on quest 3 they actually randomly drop voltage to the point it does nothing ( probably 30mins people are finding ) Covered a video and made community post on channel and Reddit about this. Alot of ewaste now with 5v batteries that's simply not enough for quest 3

@@filipivan5125 I was comparing the BoboVR Strap to this one. BoboVR batteries drain super quick but the other headset, with a full charge and playing stand alone VR, you get the 5 to 6 hours of gameplay as advertised. This is again with medium brightness and at 72hz.

@@rontalley it won't do any more than 30w total draw from wall. The 18w charger is no good for power and use unless fully charged already, but then is the problem of quest 3 not actually getting full consistent 18w. It's a joke that they don't even include a charger with their official dock, which has a draw of 27w, with 2x 2w for controllers. So technically, meta say you can get more than 18w headset charge if you use their dock, but then they don't supply a power supply for it, recommending their own 45w charger be purchased, just to do 27w across headset and 2 controllers. They absolutely designed it this way, either the usb port was a known fault on quest 2 (melted ports) and they've limited charge from using usb port, maybe part of the design where it now rotates too, but even after everything we try do to improve charge and battery life it has one last flaw.... Depending on system load and charge, it will STOP charging when it senses it's too hot, which if you were plugged into mains with a power brick above 30w, to STOP the damn thing dying on you, it then gets to the point in heavy use it won't charge at all and you have to stop and let it cool. It's all a mess, even the official elite straps people are finding their headset battery dead before the headstrap battery. There's also the extremely questionable observation I had before on quest 2, when I compared to neo 3 link over a year ago I said both quest 2 and neo 3 link supported pd charge as seen though my voltage tester, but I've recently put all my headsets together again and only seeing 5v, not 9v on quest 2, that's very odd and I'm not sure exactly why. People are arguing it's for battery preservation, I argue retention rate falling off a cliff because the headset takes so long to charge and dies fast is worse than trying to preserve a battery longer than anyone would even care. (I still have oculus go that works just fine lol) Pico neo 3 link used constantly with 12v 2amp on pc over a year and still fine, Pico 4 also with upto 25w FAST charging (sits at that for a decent time) Meta dropped the ball on this, it's one huge pain in 2023 dealing with awful battery life and sub standard charge rates.

@@SuperQuni comment from Reddit: “I have the exact same issue and I emailed bobovr support yesterday about it. This was their response: Due to the relatively high power consumption of quest3. The B2's have a slight hissing sound at the output of the device, listen to each one close to the battery. This is normal. Our current test is that it does not affect use. All power banks have varying degrees of sound, it's just that our batteries are relatively close to our ears and can be heard relatively easily. If you really think it will cause trouble, please let us know on time. We will provide after-sales service according to the after-sales process.” So looks like bobo seem to think it’s normal, personally I’m still quite concerned

As someone working with alot of vr seeing you enthousiasme is absolutely holsome. Great video veel super senciere. Could it may be that you can lower the back of the headsyrap then the headband would make more sence and should also hel weight and stop it from pulling itself up when you tighten the top strap. Btw in most cases you dont want over the air charging speed increses they would cause overheating because there reasons why the battery contoller is set up like that so thag gh5e battery survives and stays cool, but maybe your right meta made some inase later updates to the quest 2 like the 120hz and the giant Performance upgrades. Maybe they dit it because the battery is already small so that it doesnt get damaged by fast charging and so it doesn't overheat while you play and charge. Its a consumer headset that still is super cheap in comparison even with the new price so i would say 5 hours is completely fine if you use it more then that i would get a pimax or beyond.

Hey, thanks for the video and the information. I have two power banks connected to my Quest while I'm playing. With one power bank my headset always discharges slightly and with the other power bank it actually charges up to 100% while I'm playing. With the second power bank, which does charge the headset, the cable gets very hot at the connection. So I'm not sure if this is always the case with the 14 watts. thanks for your content. best regards from Germany
