Definitely my favourite Sierra series and in my opinion the best example of the save file transfer. I wish more RPG series had such a variety of settings. Quest for Glory (aka "Hero's Quest (1988)) was my introduction to adventure role-playing games at age 12 in in 1991. An absolutely charming game. The atmosphere in the game (especially the chilling feeling of wandering through the forest at night when you're first starting out and are in danger of being killed in any battle). Not to mention the beautiful art and environmental and character designs. The music, also, is simply unforgettable - although back in 1991 my parents' PC only had a "pc speaker" for sound, LoL (so "beeps" only). But it was fun to later be able to play the game with Sound Blaster sound, and today (on my current PC) with the Roland MT-32 MIDI music and effects...that would have BLOWN MY MIND 32 years ago! However, today I'm not much of a fan of the Quest For Glory VGA remake. For me, the EGA version still looks better (many of the character and monster designs in the VGA remake look unremarkable or silly - in fact many of the monsters tend to look more like stuffed toys rather than something that is truly threatening). And I much prefer to battle monsters with my keyboard and mouse.

In contrast, the Thief and Magic User are locked out of some of the Fighter's quests and can't use the sword and shield.

Great video review. First video of yours that I have watched. Keep up the stellar work. 🙂 This series always felt like something that was ahead of its time to me. They had so many different ingredients assembled that even now are not always done as well in modern games. Just the fact that you could bring the same character along through different games was such a cool thing. I also like the fact that you could bring in solutions to problems through spells learned in earlier games. That was very cool of the devs. One of these days I will do a series of "Let´s Plays" of these games. Your video was a great way of reminding me of that.

Great vid! Haven't played the VGA remake, and have still yet to play past the first QFG. I'm actually a fan of the text parser interface, but that's just what I grew up with. So, if you save the Baron's daughter, who is essentially the brigand leader, the game will end, without giving you a chance to save the Baron's son? I've thought of trying to do that before, but having to defeat so many strong baddies to get to her always dissuaded me, so I always worked my way up by doing the small quests first, along with saving the Baron's son.

Just completed this game. It is mostly a fun game I agree, and quite filled with content for its time. I got annoyed a lot of times though. I have encountered several bugs which forced me to restart (and it is a grinding game so it hurts), I didn't like its limits on waiting, and worst knowing there are unwinnable states in the game I was very paranoid about making progress until finally I just checked what moves could result in them so I could play more relaxed. And that Mage's Maze frustrated me a lot, until I read the manual and saw the rules were explained there. Old games I guess.

This series is my Saurus-jerky, I'd welcome a look at each volume. For me though, I prefer the original EGA version of part 1 - being the one I grew up with surely has little to do with it :). It's in the era of better programmed parsers compared with early Sierra, and it feels more involving not being told by the game all the options you can/must ask about, instead of, in the first 2 games, needing to pay attention and remember who I need to talk with about what. And there were so many wonderful verbs that got reduced to the hand icon. Sierra really lost a lot interactive appeal with the move to point & click (though they refined their charm in other areas and they remain very playable). And VGA version cut out a cool extra bit with the cave troll, so I hold that against it too. There's just a bunch of little things that are different, I'd argue some are objectively and admit I'm a curmudgeon about change. A few are objectively better in VGA though, I could give it another go, the graphics are pretty nice (even without my amazing purple pants and black cape). Did you know they animated the portraits and the monsters with rotoscoped claymation?

I remember one part in QFG2 where you had to remember some really obscure name that only gets mentioned in conversation once to progress. Had to take notes to get through it.
@MagusMarquillin7 жыл бұрын
I think I know the part you mean - towards the end, "speak the name of power"? Not sure how it connects to my comment, unless your countering my positive parser memories with a negative one. I remember taking notes when I first played these, and many other typing games long ago - I don't remember it bothering me. However, I have to give these games props for teaching me to type, spell and expand my vocabulary - any strange names I had to remember were just an investment in the world's lore and verisimilitude. Maybe it's a sign of my age, old enough to love this, but not old enough to easily slip into the first 4 Ultima games.

As someone who played both the EGA and VGA versions on era-appropriate hardware back the early 90s, I can say that the timing of enemy attacks never really lined up with the damage you took, even back in the day. I don't think the series every really made the Dodge and Parry skills super useful, though the QFG2 remake by AGD did do a lot to fix the relatively weak combat systems of the original series.

In my opinion the original EGA version was somehow superior in terms of gameplay. The mini-games and combat felt more responsive to me in terms of controls with instant feedback. The VGA version had a sort of lag in between hitting a key and the animation kicking in (perhaps a deliberate choice to favor presentation at the cost of responsiveness). I did like the change from text interface to point-n-click, but I didn't like how the mini-games, including combat, lost their control responsiveness.
@Cannotbetamed15 жыл бұрын
I do agree that the combat seems laggy in the VGA version - it's why I almost never play a warrior, it's too hard to time things whereas if I have magic I can spam it.

Your adventure game reviews are the best, but this one was especially well-written and edited. God, though, that awful "day for night"-esque blue filter layered over the standard graphics for the nighttime sequences make my eyes want to die. I hope you choose to cover the sequels at some point!

Thank you very much! I do want to cover the others in the series as well.

Multiple, different, varying, other, un-alike, not the same, and unlike ways! ;) Sorry for being a blockhead and thanks for the review!

What you said about ending the game early by defeating the Brigand leader is not accurate. How can you defeat the Brigand leader before finding both of the Baron's children when *Spoiler Alert* the Brigand Leader IS one of the Baron's Children? Secondly, I go back and play the entire Quest For Glory Series about every 2 years and in playing QG1, Defeating the Brigand Leader doesn't end the game. For me, running off Baba Yaga is what ends it. No matter what class you are, defeating Baba Yaga requires a magic mirror that is in possession of the brigand leader, which you cannot get unless you defeat him first...

You might want to go back and play again to get your facts straight.

@@Cannotbetamed1 well I am definitely going to go back and play it anyway, because I am overdue to play the entire series again... but I have played this game every couple of years since its release back in the early 90s and everytime I have played, I have completed the game with the maximum possible store, and the very last thing I did what is runoff Baba Yaga after I defeated the brigand leader

It sounds like you're playing the game the same way every time. The Baron's son can be completely ignored or missed, if you defeat the Brigand Leader and go right to the castle rather than to Baba Yaga, the game ends. The land still being cursed is commented on in the little wrap up you get after your party.
