best video i've seen so far on snelling hooks. one said to use a straw! lol. others have all these loops and keep twisting the loop. this is simple.

I did it, I did it, I did it. I'm so proud of myself. Now if I do it 700 times I'll remember how to do it tomorrow.

This is my favorite snell if you're doing it at the end of your line. It's not clearly explained in the video but see it done that way at 3:40. However be advised, it's easy to tie with limp line with no memory. I practiced with 100 lb braid & it comes out perfect every time. With heavy mono it's a lot harder to tie.

One thing you did not mention--but is vital. Notice the line is threading through the backside of the barb through the eye. Put another way, if you do your snell by starting the knot by pushing line through the eye, the line MUST come in on the barbed side. Do this yourself both ways--IF the line comes in on the other side of the barb, when the line comes tight, it OPENS the hook, instead of closing the hook into the fish jaw. She IS doing it correctly, they are just not explaining it.

Also note he is STARTING with a line NOT attached to the reel, so when he is done you need a uni to uni, or albreight or something to attach to the reel's main line. IF you want to tie directly to the line of the reel--no attachment of leader to the main line, follow this but start by putting the line through the hook, on the barb side, then follow the instruction provided.

Ridiculous. This knot is easily tied at the end of your line, doesn't need to be a piece of leader.

Nice vid...thanks. Not trolling (pun) but at 3:40 it should state that the standing end can be placed through the eye....not the tag end. I will use this method from now on.

its even faster and easier to do using a whip finisher for fly tying, specially on smaller hooks with real thin line, I do it all the time on my herring fishing rigs, its a real good knot tho, never had one brake on me yet

Thanks for the tip markeyjames22. Is this to ensure a tight knot or reduce oxidation?

This hook Snelling demonstration was very nice but the fluke hook & fluorescent line demo was done backwards. When done correctly the longer part of the leader should be going to the rear of the hook. The large loop technique is done winding to the rear not to the front because the last step is to pull the remaining potion of the leader to the rear to create a leader portion from the large loop.

What would be the advantage of doing it that way compared to this? As I understand it the way shown in this video can be used to tie line straight from the reel to the hook, where the one you describe (and shown in other vids) not only prevents this but requires the loop to be pulled through towards the rod end - leaving you with a slightly scarred bit of line near the hook. The method shown in the video seems to be significantly superior at least for my purposes.

Advantage for the front wind? Less waste. As a fisherman myself I can fully appreciate your concern about scared or over stressed (friction burned) causing unnecessary leader line or fishing line damage. It defeats the entire purpose when you can avoid unnecessary frustrating break offs. Point taken. It really does come down to your understanding of the technique that is being deployed. In other words, there maybe a level of difficulty to the technique and your own physical dexterity being employed that may make all the difference to your results. I might actually agree with you if anyone is unable to employ any technique without damaging the line. If one technique suits you better, by all means, stick with. I simply like the challenge and sometimes you’re absolutely right, it's not worth it. It's really a subjective experience. I have actually seen Asian women do the front wind method in mere seconds, like machines, no mistakes.

Divus iulius Yes you're quite right about the level of difficulty. I've just been trying and comparing the two different methods and winding from back-front as shown here definitely requires a higher level of dexterity. If given the choice I would rather tie it the other way given the greater simplicity, however I was looking for a knot that allowed me to tie a hook directly to the mainline so I'm stuck with having to do a fair bit of practice it seems! I'm confident it'll get easier though once I've worked out and committed to memory things like the optimum size of the loop the tag end, but I'm using this to tie to some small hooks like Kamasan B980s in sizes 18-14, which just makes it even more difficult haha! Thanks for your input Divus
