Great video! One variable not tested is friction on the Palamer knot. Over time as the two loops encounter friction on the hook eyelet, the knot may fail. This is why the snell is often preferred. As that friction is eliminated.

If a hook is snelled correctly, its gonna take a mighty big fish to break it. Your test may prove the Palomar stronger, but like I stated previously... The snell also is better for circle hooks, as it improves the "action" of the hook.

Looks like it broke at the knot. Hard to see but looks like the loop dug into the main line causing it to fail. At what pound did both knots fail.
@RafSowiOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
The snell broke at the knot around 31.3 lb, the palomar knot broke before the knot at 33.5 lb. I used a 40lb fluocarbon.

Use palomar for years never had a knot let loose the best knot in my opinion
@RafSowiOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Both are very good knots indeed. If it goes loose, it's usually because it wasn't tied properly.

Snelled circle hooks hook better than when they are tied by the loop. Plus if you set your drag at around 1/2 breaking strain, the knot strength isn't so much of an issue

Thank you so much for your helpful feedback. In this video, I was just trying to compare the knots strength of each, but agree that both are great for fishing. Tight lines! 🙏😊

Excellent demonstration on how to tie the knots and what seems to be a good test of knot strength. I am surprised the Palomar did better.
@RafSowiOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I greatly appreciate your feedback! I think the main reason is that the palomar knot bites less into the leader line with tension. This is what makes it a stronger knot at 95%+ if tied properly.

There are more than 5 ways of tying the snell knot and the way you tied it is the weakest. You will noticed that your snell slips as it break.

I recommend leaving a 1/4 inch of tag end on the snell knot to account for slippage which will help it with its strength a lot.

Its not the strength when using a circle hook, its the hooking ability. In my tests, the snell knot has it all over any other knot

There are different ways to snell a hook. I suggest you make the comparison first, of the different ways. Palomar is popular co'z it's easy and strong but not necessarily the strongest knot.

One problem: you only tested a single knot. It would’ve been better to test at least ten knots each to account for variables.

This strengh test is made wrong. First of all, pressure wasnt added equally and force to the snell knot was added much faster - this leaves less time for flex in the line. Second, we didnt see area of the line while it broke. I think You said that snell break right at the knt was because line simply touch metal in the eye with single layer, so it breaks at this point. In the palomar line touches metal with two layers and ties around it instead touching it with one side, so stress breaks line just after the knot where its single layered. Even that You intended to show palomar stronger, the difference in lbs result on a scale is within measuring error of this cheap chinese "scale". In my opinion test shows nothing objectively, because both knots werent tested in same conditions. I also think in most situactions and extremely hevy load snell would withstand more on eyed hooks because it doesnt work only on eyelet, but also on the shaft and eyelet is mostly stopper. In that case palomar is prone for eyelet failure (most are not welded, have some sharp edges, can be straightened), which is not the case for snell.
