I spent my childhood in Novato, Ca. I went to Olive Elementary School on Plum St. My grandmother lived on Cherry St. Aunt, uncle, and cousins on Summer St. Back then in the 1960's it was pretty rual. Left in 1972 and haven't been back. I would've never thought something like this would be going on in that little town.

In 1967 or early 1968 HHC 1/68 Armor pulled an M24 out of the junkyard at Baumholder Germany and set it in front of the barracks. I was the Battalion Maintenance wrecker operator and helped set it in place. Someone decided to pull open the deck plates to "peek under the hood" and we discovered the two Caddy engines in there. I don't recall any markings on it, but was in very good shape (no bullet holes), it could have been made runnable with little trouble.

I would of rather of watched them take one tank/vehicle and show the restoration process through the whole series, that way, you get a good few seasons out of the show and it would of been more enjoyable...

Bulldog was produced to late for its war, lost to the sheridan for airdrops, got out classed by soviets rather quickly and wasnt favored by the crews. It was more modern than the chaffee but the chaffee got to fufill its role better.

So they parade his vehicles every July 4th? So,,,,,,,,,, ummm they know it's coming,,,,,,,, WTF? Really hate how TV producers try to manufacture drama when there is none. If it ran the previous July 4th,,,, did they just assume it could sit untouched for a year? If so,,, ummm,,,,,,, nah, not so much.

Ovehaul??? It should be called the history of The M-24 Chaffee because they don't really show much of the overhaul process. It's always like this on this show. A bit disappointing to say the least.

So the Brit version of this is people overhauling tanks that are in VERY bad condition and is interesting. The American version is a boring soap opera/realty tv BS. overhauling restored tanks lol wtf how is this even called Tank Overhaul? Taking off brand new gaskets this is hell lol . American TV seems to think pretending everything is worst case situation is interesting.

Not to detract from the efforts of the team maintaing the Chaffee, but it does seem more of a maintenaince project. What was fascinating about this series, was the potential of seeing extreme retoration projects completed on a limited budget.

Chaffee is a nifty little tank. If the US had produced more of these, earlier in WW2, this could have had a major effect in addressing the American tank deficiency's. This could have been the best light recon tank of the war. It was actually capable of scraping with the German big cats.

Dien Bien Phu? Unlike previous such operations, they built a "fort" on the floor o a valley, not on the top of a hill or ridge. I guess this was because they planned to be able to use the flat valley floor for airstrips. Certainly there were "outstations", like Elliane, etc, (all allegedly named after Dien Bien Phu CO, De Castries, sundry mistresses.) Outside influences? Much of the artillery hauled into place was actually provided by Uncle Sam. All those 105mm M2 guns had been captured in the early stages of the Korean fiasco. They were "transferred" to China and then moved to the Chine - Viet Nam border.. There, they were dismantled and man-packed / animal packed and in rare cases, loaded into motor transport for distribution. and emplacement. Most of the massive amount of anti-aircraft artillery was of Russian design, but directly funneled in by China. Japan? At the end of the Last Great Unpleasantness, a LOT of Japanese military types were stranded in Viet Nam, Many of them apparently thought it too shamefull to go home as defeated warriors, so they "blended" into the scenery of villages and small towns, often marrying into the society, completely. Among these Japanese troops were a LOT of military engineers. It was from them that the concept of hiding artillery in caves and tunnels was developed. The Viet Minh first took the outstations, one by one, positioning AA guns etc, as they advanced. The first task of all that "foreign" artillery was to disable the airstrips (plural) to slow down the resupply process. As the French increasingly resorted to parachute drops, with fighter air cover, so did the density of AA guns in the hills. I was there for the 50th anniversary "celebrations". Walking through the "Disney-fied" remains of the old fortification I kept asking myself, "What were they thinking. Since then, I have encountered a few ex-Legionnaires, who were actually there. The most interesting was one who had been a teenaged Wehrmacht soldier in the rout out of Czechoslovakia. He and a LOT of his comrades figured that, if they were going to be POWs, they would go with the USA, rather than the USSR. So, there he was, behind the wire in occupied Austria, when a Foreign Legion recruiter stopped by. Otto joined the Legion. ( A REAL "Boys Own" adventure, ensued). After the usual training, a lot of it on German weapons with which he was familiar, he ended up in sunny South East Asia, French Indo-China, to be precise. An early arrival at Dien Bien Phu, he was also a relatively early "leaver", being badly wounded in the early days and thus was evacuated by air to Hanoi. He was STILL in the hospital when the fort fell and in such a bad way that he was handed over to a Viet Minh medical team as the French departed. He got better. So, he and a swag of his surviving POWs were sent by rail, north into China. Then, they traveled to Siberia and across to Moscow, to be eventually handed back to the French in occupied Berlin. At this point, he realized that the Legion owed him some serious back-pay, so off he went to Marseilles. Here he was made a "job offer" of the sort only the Legion can make. New uniform, new weapons, new "mission. New name of you want it. Where? Algeria. After that little jaunt, he looked at a world map for somewhere a LONG way from "excitement". Australia: Living a quiet life on the other side of my city; making fine slow-fermented Sauerkraut and excellent beer and Schnapps.

The logic in priceless: the chaffe was faster than tigers and panthers like wtf 1 is a light tank and other 2 are medium and heavy tanks. And it also had a powerfull 75mm gun that was used on the sherman and could not kill panthers or tigers

***** Other than unissued T43 HVAP, I know of no 75mm ammunition for the M3 in service that could penetrate the Tiger at that range. The 75mm with Shot M72, could at about 50m or less, only assuming its dead on.

There is a little bit mistake about history here in this video ..The 1971 war wasn't indo pakistan war .it was "War of independence of East Pakistani People" later they turned into "Bangladesh" .india was helping East Pakistani people giving the arms during the war.The war was about 9 months long from 1971 26 march to 16 December 1971 .East Pakistan won the war . west Pakistan (Right now Pakistan) attacked india at 4 December because they were helping west pakistan giving the arms .. Hope it will be edited soon.

Why are you showing RAF Wellington bombers at 0.24? Look to be mark 1s from the 1938-40 period, most likely stationed in the UK. The Wellington was never used by the French or anyone else in Indo China / Vietnam.. It would not be difficult task to locate some film of C47 or C119 aircraft which undertook most if not all the airdrops into DBP or Bristol 170 and Ju52 aircraft that were used until landing became too dangerous. Such a sloppy practice make it hard to take any of the remaining content at face value..

Yes, its a good tank. No, it isn't that amazing. You can't compare its top speed to a sherman or a tiger because it's a light tank and the sherman and tiger were not. You can't compare it's gun to the sherman because by the time the chaffee was used in large numbers the shermans with 75mm guns were very outdated.
