Ben: So are you going to be anywhere this year, at cons? Matt: Yeah, a lot of them! Narrator: He would not be going to a lot of cons this year.

So we weren't the only ones extending the Holmes Basic Set. Our accumulated 1980ish kit was Holmes + Supplements 1-3 + AD&D Monster Manual + DM Screen

"11:17 ...it's not like a super faithful OD&D; clone although that that would be hard to do given how obscure..." - That would be Delving Deeper, especially the annotated version.

Literally bought the S&W book at my LGS about 2 weeks ago & have been diving into OSR content. Started watching his Jordaba videos for inspiration on how to run a game. Then this video drops TODAY! Wow. I swear the DM of my campaign is railroading me.

I think the sales numbers for Basic D&D (B/X and all iterations thereof) where always higher than AD&D. So a lot more people played basic than AD&D, even though TSR heavily marketed the latter.

Matt has got to be the most common name in gaming.

I think John or Jacob are a bit more common. Basically any biblical names that aren't too out there.

I agree. This is likely because Matt is the best name.

Freedom is paramount. OSR to me is about freedom. Freedom to make the game in your own vision.

AD&D 1E is where D&D forked in its evolution. D&D (ODD, B/X, BECMI) was the freeform, streamlined, easily house ruled and GM-ruling centred original. AD&D 1E was when they codified it and turned it into a convention play suitable vehicle. So now there was a standard way of doing everything. AD&D 1E is the poster boy for old school games but actually, it was where D&D first abandoned the aspects much of the old school fans have always praised about the OSR. If I want to play OSR I want B/X house ruled. I played AD&D 1E incessantly in the 80s as a teen and it was objectively horrid despite how we made it huge fun. You were always fighting against the rules if you wanted to avoid pure gonzo play but it had none of the freeform support of wide-open imaginative play B/X had.

Agreed completely! I’ve always been a bit confounded when I see a lot of OSR people give so much praise for AD&D, when in reality much of the OSR’s philosophies and style of gameplay are far more in line with OD&D-BECMI. AD&D is far more structured, rigid, and rules-referencing than the majority of what I would describe as “OSR” by comparison.
