I did a case study about this same issue for our company. Using a Kill-a-volt meter to measure the average power consumption, I found in Texas it costs around 40$ per computer, per year to run our standard Dell Optiplex 9020. With over 100 PCs in the building, implementing a GPO to force PCs to sleep at night, and using a WOL software to wake PCs for updates/defrags saves us around 2 grand a year.
@CabhanListis9 жыл бұрын
Layton S Heh. In my company, the time it would take for our systems to wake up would cost us in production loss for the first few minutes of just getting started more than we would save from electricity. It's kinda funny, then, how it depends on the product that a company puts out.

Employee computers can migrate with them desk to desk instantly anymore. With profile services, their desktops migrate with them and policies on the client computers can work jointly with user policies to ensure the system is configured exactly the way they need it. Shoot, I think Windows Server 2016 with their network manager can even control the vlans and subnets of the network for the client system based on any rules in place.

This might be a wierd question but I need an answer. On my room I have my air conditioner always set at around 19°C when going to sleep between 2:00 a m. to 11:00 a.m., but I don't know if having the conditioner this cold would affect the components of the PC if there is no cooling running, just the air conditioner and if it's even possible for the components to "freeze" or slow the working process of the PC.
@UltraSuperDuperFreak6 жыл бұрын
19°C is warm mate ... besides there is a reason there are cooling fans in pc's ..they get too hot if not. So you should be more worried about making room too warm hehe. And again 19°C wont do anything ..heck i have 35°C in summer time and my pc runs 24 hours a day. No problems. If you went down to maybe 5°C or lower i myself would think about letting the room warm up abit before turning it on. However i have come home in winter time with pc parts and installed em right away without problems.

@pennyandrews32929 жыл бұрын
I tend to leave my main computer on all the time for convenience. I sleep irregularly, and I want to be able to get up and go back to what I was doing on the machine immediately rather than waiting for it to boot/wake up and re-opening all my programs. Sleep and hibernation tend to cause a lot of the programs I use to glitch things out to the point that I have to restart the computer anyway, so I'm wary of using those modes. Happens more when stuff is directly dealing with video modes or resolution in a weird way. I never knew that anyone seriously suggested leaving them on. My attitude was just that I liked having my computer on, and I figured I would probably have to get a new one within three or four years anyway, so I might as well use up the computer a little faster by leaving it on. I turned monitors off to save power, but most of the computers I've owned really don't use much more power than a couple of lightbulbs when idle anyway. Back in the old days, I used to leave the computer running all night to complete large downloads on a 56K modem. Sometimes it took several days. Interestingly, the fact that leaving a computer on most of the time can spare older components might explain why I was able to keep my old 486DX running from 1994 to 2008. I did have to replace the PSU, a couple of fans, an optical drive, and the hard drive over the course of 14 years, but I've found that as long as you replace components with moving parts when they wear out, it's very rare that the motherboard, RAM, or CPU will fail. Even with a 24/7 load cycle. I mean, I have heard of RAM failing or motherboards warping, but those kind of things seem related to bad cooling or manufacturing design flaws.

@jimmyharsveld15948 жыл бұрын
To hibernate instead of leaving it alone on power? Be sure WOL is turned off or it is a waste of time to keep it monitored. What I do is turning the system complete off when I sleep and keep it on when I awake. It is bad for hardware to put the computer on and off many times a day. So my Windows 10 Skylake system is on during 10 hours a day at one time and goes down when I finished for a long time e.g. sleeping or away from my house.

i don't agree it's a stupid question. I have two Compaq CQ62 with identical problems that developed six months. Bad solder joints have created a no-boot condition that can only be remedied by taping over the intake and exhaust vents and letting the laptop warm up for about twenty minutes. Whatever isn't making contact expands and the computers boot and run perfectly until they are turned off and cool down. I can't help but theorize that hundreds ore thousands of on-heat-off-cool cycles accelerated the bad solder failures. I can hibernate them no problem.

I moved recently, but where I lived, electricity was dirt cheap. For the longest time, I had a motherboard that had problems booting and resuming from standby (Abit IP35-E - really common issue), so I would leave it on overnight and only turn it off when I left for work. When I finally upgraded and started putting my computer into standby before going to bed (or after 3 hours of inactivity), I consistently saved $8 or more on my power bills each month. Despite the low cost of power, the upgrade essentially paid for itself within 7 or 8 months since the board only cost me $60. It was a no-brainer then, and it's the least I can do now that I'm in California, where power isn't so cheap. Long story short: don't worry about shortening the life of hardware when the cost to run it is likely to be much more than whatever it's worth anyway.
@Sulfen8 жыл бұрын
The only good thing about Idaho is that electricity only costs 7-9 cents per kWh. I could pretty much leave my computer on 24/7 using the full power of the CPU, monitor, Video card, etc. and it would only cost about $30 a month. But with real usage it only comes down to $5-10 a month by leaving it on 24/7 and letting it go to sleep on its own when not in use.

Hah, I used to run my machine 24 hours a day (including leaving the monitor on, ugh), mainly due to fear of thermal stress. When I first got it it had a motherboard failure a few months in, when I was turning it off when not in use. This was back in the 1990s and my CRTs from then were quite dim after years of this. Once I started to learn about electricity usage I began turning it off when I slept and when I was gone. Nowadays I put it to sleep instead of shutting down. It's horrifying how much power it used then versus now with sleep and an LCD monitor. As for component wear, I still have the HDD from the 1990s that I ran 24 hours a day and it still spins up and can store data just fine. So yeah, wear isn't an issue.
@1pcfred9 жыл бұрын
Thermal stress from off and on cycles, heating, and cooling the system is a real issue. This was especially true when RoHS hit a few years ago, and the industry did not have the expansion rates of the board, and solder, worked out at all. Virtually all of those first RoHS systems are dead today. BGA ICs just popped right off motherboards. Now if you plan on getting new hardware every couple of years then thermal fatigue will probably never catch up to you anyways. But if you want a system to last as long as possible then just leave it on. Although if you run all the time you stress the filter capacitors with more line ripple, and they will wear out sooner. But that wear is easier to deal with. Just replace the PSU at regular intervals. 5 years is about right there.
@jimmyharsveld15948 жыл бұрын
Copy it. I agree :)
@zedorda13378 жыл бұрын
Modern computers made since 2000 actually has more thermal stress during ON time and less during boot up and shut down. But they are developed with this in mind.
@1pcfred8 жыл бұрын
Zed orda thermal stress occurs when temperature changes. Like say, going from cold, to hot. Then expansion occurs, and materials are put under a strain, due to temperature differentials between dissimilar materials, and different rates of expansion. While a computer is on, once operating temperature is achieved, the temperature remains relatively constant. Then there is no movement. Things reach a state of equilibrium. So perhaps you can explain how a constant temperature leads to thermal stress?
@zedorda13378 жыл бұрын
Paul Frederick There is alot of temperature changes while a computer functions. Just making guesses about it shows through your comment. Take a laser temp reader to your motherboard one day you will see how incorrect your comment really is.
@1pcfred8 жыл бұрын
Zed orda I have temperature sensors in my systems that I monitor. The temperature does not vary that much. Thermal sensors are far more accurate than a laser thermometer is too.

Rebooting for an update isn't just to reboot. It's to finish installing umpteen updates, which stalls the boot process until complete, and can take a looong time. I love an alternate OS for this reason. It will install all updates, to itself and any other software that has updates. You can use it without slowing down during the update process. When you're done, or when it's done in case there are security updates, you can just watch for a notice to reboot. If you have to reboot, you reboot and it's just like any other reboot. You only have to reboot to reload the kernel and other low level software that can't just reload on demand (it's already finished updating). Though multiple distributions are working on a solution so updates never require a reboot.

Nearly all laptop or desktop computer have fans which rotate constantly. After many months of constant operation accumulate dust which blocks the air flow inside the heat sinks. The fan then tries to rotate faster but at the same time gathers more dust. It is a vicious cycle. At the end the computer automatically lowers the CPU or GPU frequency avoiding crash. The computer becomes very loud and very slow. It is not easy for anyone to clean the fan blades and heat sink. For example Apple traditionally prevents user to open its computer by using special screws or no screws at all. Other manufacturers like Toshiba have a small lid the lets the heat sink to be cleaned. The macbook 12" retina is the first from Apple after Cube 2001 without a fan. Laptop in general consume multiple times less power than desktop. So 24/7 operation isn't costly. Also a solution is to set automatic shutdown of screen, hard disks and lower CPU frequency after a period of inactivity.

every component ( a chip, transistor, resistor, so on ) has the time of work without a failure. For example some transistors can work 100 000 hrs and then they have a possibility to brake down because of their oldness. Everything has its durability. The longer a thing works the faster it wears down. The same with computer components. And about a start-up stress - a cold start is not good for the things which are in motion AND work in higher temperatures: combustion engines, electric motors etc. So the only thing that doesn't like cold starts is a hard drive. BUT the impact is so low that it can be neglected.

i'ma a very situational type of pc user, and i'm not always at the ready to push a button to turn on a machine I want/need to use. I've tried implementing and using various WoL options, but nothing was ever reliable enough to replace just leaving them on. That is until more recently with vm systems and RDS being able to manage turning the machine on and off. Another cool idea I is to use use one of those wifi/app based power timers. I picked a few up over Christmas, and it was nice being able to not only turn them on/off from anywhere, but you can create customized on/off power schedules for each plug you add. Just plug your machine in one of those bad boys with the bios set to always boot after power failure and voila, you can have a reliable means of remotely turning your machine on. If hooked up specifically to remote peripherals, that can greatly reduce the depreciation rate on your other equipment as well. WIFI always needs to stay on, but that only requires a switch, guest vlan and some throwaway equipment.

Hello Eli These days I really don't know what to believe anymore partly about the updates and partly about turning the computers on and off daily. What I know is what I experience from what i do or don't do, and here goes: 1: I don't turn on or off the computers daily. I am using a mini-laptop as a web/mail-server and inspite of the fact thart it is online 24/7 except from when it automatically restarts due to a script I made to detect it's online state it only restarts when an update for the Antivirus demands a reboot and it shows when the computer can no longer ping it self from the outside IP. The computer I'm using to write this message is right now on an up-time if 12 days - I expect it to have an up-time of somewhere between 15 and 25 days between reboots. I might add that I have about 12 TB of storage available to my computers and this computer when it's scanning for viruses is taking about 1½ day to scan. 2: When you read point 1, I guess you might have gathered that I'm not updating my cmputers from Microsoft at all. and I never had except when I tested it - on 2 computers at one time. 1 computer had all updates from Microsoft and 1 computer had no updates from Microsoft at all and guess what... It turned out that the one with all the Microsoft updates had one problen after another where the one with no updates went on and on (pretty much like an energizer battery) with pretty much no problems at all. At one point I even had to reformat the one with all the Microsoft updates - and the other is still running as smoothly as ever today and I have never had to reformat it. I made the test about 10 years ago. So that made me think - What is really Microsoft's idea about all these blasted updates. I have 2 theories and one of these theories coincide with what is going on with the new Windows 10 - The so-called full system backdoor into people's private lives - In other words Invasion of Privacy. My theories are: 1: Microsoft has no idea about what security means - I don't know if I really believe that is true - I really hope it is not true. 2: Microsoft have using the updates maintained a back door into the system to go in and pull information out on request from government agencies like NSA or FBI and others. And this is what I believe may be the case in Windows 10 as well except these days they can go through the backdoor as easy as cake and now they will have full access to the entire system at will. If you take a look at the agreement we have to accept to have it installed it's right there that we hand over a carte blanche permission to Microsoft to access our entire system. During the time since I started hosting my webserver since 2002 I have had lots of hackers trying to break into it and none have succeeded. I have even lived life online in a dangerous way as I have often written back to the people who tried to phish my account info and I told then that I intended on Closing their Phishing site. After I sent them the email I made the phishing reports and no later than 2 hours after I sent the reports the phishing sites were out of business.

And I can assure there's dusty were I live, 1 meter from my laptop stand my 55' 4K TV, which I dust of every second week. Of course I know that dust can be a problem on machines with bad filthers, it was a problem on my old PC, so i'm not saying that a PC running 24/7 doesn't result more dust than a PC on standby.

@ It is pretty awesome that a nicely build filter can make such a big diffrence, on my old Medion laptop (I know, what the hell was I thinking buying a PC there was born with stage 4 cancer), on that the dust got into the fanblades in big chunks, it really choked the life out of the pc, and I cleaned it evey month, I took out the fan and cleaned every single blade as an autist would doit 🤪 But it just got worse and worse, it sounded like a jet-fighter, and it got VERY warm, actually so much that there came a BIG black spot in the right side next to the touch-pad, it was extreme! I bought a semi good Lenovo for about 1000$, it have 8GB RAM, and came with i7 processer, not the best, but it have really surprised me how powerful it was, and still is... Even now after 3-4 years, it just running like leopard military tank, and I bet most lenovo users never heard about this model (Notebook z50-70 | 8GB Ram - i7) 💪🏻💻🤳🏻

is it better to hibernate or to shut down ?
@Oleg_pwr9 жыл бұрын
frederic abdou none of this. Just send it to the sleep mode. It takes one sec to go to that state and 2 secs to to wake up. And once in awhile (usually before you go to bed) just turn it off.
@DigBipper1889 жыл бұрын
frederic abdou Hibernate is a better option if you want to keep working from the last day. here's the difference between sleep and Hibernate: SLEEP: The computer will enter a state where the system's current image is saved to the RAM, this state means the CPU is in a low power state, but has not fully shut off. this allows the system to still receive and poll for input from the mouse, keyboard, LAN/dial-up and power button. This state has the possible vulnerability that if a hacker gets onto your network, they can send a wake command and access your machine. this function is great if you want to resume as fast as possible, while keeping the machine technically powered on 24/7 without undue stress on the components. Hibernate: This is a better option to avoid the sleep state vulnerability that some machines can suffer if the LAN adapter in the system is always on with an IP attached (this is rare nowadays though). the hibernate state saves the computer's current state to the hard drive and completely shuts the machine off, but adds a command to read the hibernation file the OS leaves that has an image of the RAM when it was running the last time. this is a slower approach to using sleep mode, but it's more secure and it's better for your power bill and the machine!. This also has the advantage that if, during the system's hibernate period the power is lost, then the data is still there to complete a restore and boot the computer into its last state, where sleep mode uses the RAM, which if you picked anything up in ICT class, you know is volatile and is erased when mains power is lost, meaning any unsaved work is gone and you can sometimes get corruptions... although on a modern OS (post Windows NT 5.0) tend not to have this issue since the applications are normally stopped during the beginning of S1 sleep.

Updates still takes a lot of time, especially after a reboot. And they also happen at the least convenient time. Back when I was in school we had lunch break 11:45, and when we were back at 12:15 our computers had restarted because of an update, and that happened quite a lot. I get it that they update things to fix it, but sometimes I wonder if they just change 1 line of code and calls it an update.

In a world ablaze with lights so bright, A plea for change, for a mindful sight. Don't switch off, they cry, the power so grand, But heed this caution, let's understand. Energy whispers in the crackling wire, Yet conservation is what we require. A symphony of sockets, humming so loud, Amidst the chaos, a plea from the crowd. "Don't switch off your PC," the command is clear, Yet in this dance of electrons, let wisdom steer. The digital pulse, a heartbeat so fast, But in this rhythm, let sustainability last. Lights, oh radiant beacons in the night, A plea to keep shining, a beacon of light. But in this brilliance, find a subtle glow, A balance to strike, for the Earth to bestow. The faucet, a symphony of liquid grace, But a plea echoes softly in this watery space. "Don't switch off the flow," they sing in accord, Yet let droplets remind us, it's a precious hoard. America's exasperation, resources strained, In this abundance, let not apathy be gained. Don't switch off the call to conserve and save, For the land we cherish, the oceans and cave. In this warning poem, let consciousness rise, As the Earth sighs beneath our endless skies. Don't switch off the urgency, the need to care, For our shared home, a planet rare.

I turn mine off and unplug the power chord. I was told by repair stores that even if it's off, power from the plug continues to run through the circuit board. This can and DOES shortens the life of the components. Unless you depend on 24/7 updates say, for a business, there is no reason to keep any computer on all of the time. I've had desktop towers outlive internal hard drives because I give the electronic circuits time to rest and not age. I believe that leaving the computer on or plugged in (the same goes for clock radios, microwave oven, TV sets.... if you are not using them UNPLUG them to prolong the life span of the electronic stuff you have!) shortens the life of these things.

Good video. I personally wouldn't hibernate a computer if you're worried about security. If someone gets local access to the computer, they can easily dump the entire memory contents (i.e. the hibernation file). Sometimes this could even include passwords that had recently been typed in. It would be worth doing a shut down in my opinion (but I am a little extra cautious in regards to security).

@Eli the Computer Guy Live I would suggest that users would have the ability to just disable the network adapter from the operating system's control panel settings instead to prevent hackers to compromise the systems connected to the network, that being said, I honestly think that would be better than shutting down the computer, if power is not a problem for that user.

For those of you who complain that it takes Eli so long to answer a question, this is what he says: Yes, you should turn off your computer or at the very least hibernate it for the following reasons: 1. The electricity bill will be huge if you have a lot of computers running all day long. 2. When your computer is turned off, no hackers can attack it. If everyone leaves their computer on and one computer is taken over by a hacker once everyone leaves at the end of their shift, the hacker can do whatever he wants on the network because no one will be there to notice any suspicious activity. 3. It doesn't take long for your computer to reboot after an update, whereas in the past (as far back as 15 years) this took way too long. All of you should appreciate him giving you the context for this question, namely that people were worried about turning off their computers for several reasons. Eli is trying to teach you, but if you don't meet him halfway and use your own brain then he can't help you. The only thing that isn't clear for me is whether 15 yrs ago ppl were justified in thinking that turning their computers off and on would cause wear to the hardware. Eli doesn't give a clear answer here I think, but as for the original question, he spells out the answer. Thanks Eli! :)

I very rarely reboot or shutdown my three-year-old Windows 10 laptop. When I'm done, I put it to sleep, and I'll either shutdown or restart after the major monthly Windows Update, by which time the computer will have already become quite disfunctional anyway. Until a few months ago I was having to shutdown or restart every 10 days or so, I think the reason for the improvement is that Microsoft have reduced the frequency of updates. I find that Sleep hardly uses any power at all... When on battery, after about eight hours it would have lost only about 5% of battery whilst sleeping, so I think Sleep is the ultimate balance between convenience and economy. Perhaps I may resort to Hibernate once I install an SSD.
@Philip550c7 жыл бұрын
To the people complaining about him not giving you a yes or no answer, he actually didn't give us enough detail to answer the question. The answer to this question really depends on your hardware, your software, your environment (physical and virtual), the purpose of the computer, home use or business, your industry, laws surrounding your computing use, IT policies, reliable power sources, roi, etc... Then you also have more than just on or off, even sleep or hibernate are not binary alternatives to on or off. Hibernate is not always an option depending on your hardware, and sleep has multiple low power states depending on your hardware and firmware. This is not an easy answer anymore.

the only problem i see as real enough is when you go to sleep and you dont want to download anything at night then you should turn it off better.cause first your hardware will rest and live longer(but live longer about how much,pc will last for many years anyway...).then the second reason is when you have a cheap watercooling with cheap water tubes,wich i dont trust them working as i sleep and if they lick im not there to see it and try to shut down the computer quickly. waking up in the morning and see your pc is drowned by water.i dont trust my ENERMAX 120 wich is fairly good,seems good,the tubes are ok,but in the long run i dont trust them too much cause i ve seen videos and in chatts people stating there watercooling pump or the tubes had a lick and burned there mobos or gpu.its a beautifull watercooling yes with very nice leds,strong tubes and connections that they say on the marketing it is good but i am afraid one day this bad thing will happen when i didnt have this concern with my old arctic freezer extreme aircooler and it did the job well,not as the watercooling but it was ok...so this is the only reason i see that you should turn off your pc when you sleep and if you have a cheap watercool...so what you think?did any of you had a watercooler that went bad on your pc,im curious to see if there is anyone outhere in the comments...?

Interesting what you say about updates, but it's only an opinion, and doesn't include real life experience. My home computer is from 2004 and have never been updated, and doesn't even include SP1 for Win7. That computer today operates as new and have no of the issues that my 2012 notebook have. The thing about Microsoft is that they code their software for tech of tomorrow, and when you update your computer it assumes that you have a fast modern computer. Because of this, your computer will become slower when you leave updates on. This is just my pinion, but I believe my computer will become usless if I update it, but as for now, it operates as a new computer and I have no problems using it in 2016 even if it was produced in 2004 (I did upgrade it with a new SSD, because my old HDD died).

But I can play minecraft at 120 frames per second on my gaming computer from 2012. My point isn't that updates are useless, but it doesn't make your hardware faster, but you will see your PC become slower over time be cause of all the new stuff that's coming out. PC Industry wants you to upgrade/update, but it's not always in your favour.
