I turn off my PC, unplug it, and then completely disassemble it and place all of the components in static resistance bags, and then I reassemble it when it's time to start back up.

Mrs. Roper I get 6 hours of sleep a day and it’s perfect. Everybody is different. And because I have been Bodybuilding for the past couple years, more than 6 hours of sleep causes my muscles to tear more and become more painful. Btw I sleep from 11pm to 5am and my schedule is -Eat Breakfast + Coffee -Morning Jog -Work -1.5 Hours at the gym -Sleep And this schedule requires me to sleep the same amount of time every night so I can fit all of these into my schedule every day. Life’s great and very refreshing!

+Daxxie GFX (Gaming) It's like what Linus said, doing this isn't going to dramatically deteriorate the components to the point where they're going to die in a relatively short amount of time. Every component dies eventually. The point is to have them last long enough for your needs. For example, I tend to replace my GPU every 2-3 years (I usually get the highest or second highest tier in a given period of time). Because of this, it's of less concern to me if my particular practices leads to my GPU having a greater risk of failing at year four instead of that same risk existing at year six. This is of a greater concern to those that replace their GPUs less frequently, and of zero concern to those that upgrade every year.

+pyre78 I understand your concern but heatsinks DO a lot of passive cooling on their own. When turned on but idle my 4770K rests at just 800mhz with 1-2% load and i can keep it that way for hours with an increase in temp of just 7-8 degrees (celsius). Don't be scared to try it some day :)

I turn my PC on in the morning and off at night. Another consideration that Linus didn't mention is that if you leave it running for several days without shutting down, your OS can become unstable. That's why the most common fix for an issue with your phone is to turn it off, cause no one really does it.

7 years, runs continuously. Alienware Aurora with Intel Core i7 2.67GHz, 24GB RAM, Win7 64-bit OS. Mine has been powered on pretty much since the day I bought it. The water cooling system went out last year and replaced it with a Corsair H80i unit. Other than that, I've added a hard drive. It gets shut down occasionally when new software requires it, but otherwise she's been running non-stop since 2009.

Then I come back to it and check things -- Facebook etc. Then when I step away again I put it in sleep mode. But at night, when I go to bed, I turn it off for those 6 to 8 hours. Then it's rinse & repeat starting in the morning. 1. Use, sleep @ day breaks. 2. Bed time, off.

For probably 4ish years I put my computer in sleep mode each night and rarely powered it down completely. Now the past 3ish years or so I have been powering it down each night instead of putting it in sleep mode. I noticed some improvement in my computers 'health' having opted into powering down nightly and will definitely continue to do so having lots of experience with both. But everyone's gonna have a different opinion I'm sure, and when all said and done, my computer worked fine with either method. && despite having a cheap harddrive I can spare the 7seconds of bootup time... its not like I sit there an watch it anyway pft turn it on and go make some coffee son. Is it still 7 seconds of boot time if your there for 0seconds of it? :P

Best advice is to hibernate instead of sleep if you are going to one of the 2 instead of shutdown... but I suggest that you save your work first and exit if you were typing something in a password protected document for example. It does not matter if you have a hard disk drive or not as either way it should not take too long to turn back on, it should still be faster then if you just booted up the computer instead.

Nope! Programs are shut down by power off. Reloading the 20 internet tabs I keep open at all times is a 20 second chore I don't like when I power off/on my pc. Also has to start up Spotify and RealTemp. Also has to enter your windows user password if you use one. Putting it into Hibernation is the way to go with SSD. Everything on desktop is kept the way it is.

Two parts are subject to failure: the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, bearings in fans, and dirt accumulation on heatsinks. Unplugging the computer saves the electrolytics. Going into any form of hybernation/sleep saves heatsinks/fans. There is also another part most likely to fail, one of the myriad connections between parts, solder or mechanical. That is largely driven by age, temperature, dust, and humidity (and presence of corrosive chemicals). Heatsinks can be cleaned with a blast of air (for desktops).

I don't see how letting the dust settle would reduce dust buildup? As long as you have good filters and airflow leaving it on would be better?

Fans push more air (and more dust with it) throughout your components.
@SamPhoenix_
@SamPhoenix_ 7 жыл бұрын
But good air flow keeps the the air (and dust) moving and stops it from settling on top of all your components, so as long as you have good filters (therefore reducing the amount of dust that comes in with the air) surely just making sure the dust doesnt settle would be better?
@daniilmaksimov1911
@daniilmaksimov1911 7 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "good air flow"? A "wind tunnel" like one? Based on my expirience the dust sticks to all air resistant parts of the components and it doesn't go away with the flow. I use an air pump to clenup fans and radiators. And I do agree that you need filters, but without good sealed case it won't help as much as it can.

Waking up from hibernation with an SSD is way faster than with an HDD but it obviously isnt faster than booting normally because booting normally with an SSD is also faster than with an HDD. Especially when running WIndows 8 or 10: Those have a feature called Fast Boot which is basically semi hibernation. It writes everything system relevant to the hard drive but not the programs you are running so that it will boot very quickly. And what do you think is faster: Copying 1GB from SSD to RAM or copying 2-8GB? It just depends on your needs. Maybe youre running many programs sorted in a special way on your monitors. Then the few seconds faster boot isnt worth it preparing everything again, instead of just hibernating.

Damn, wish you had addressed the validity of security concerns with leaving an internet-connected machine turned on without an human operator. I have a friend who with a background in IT who swears up and down the reason he leaves his machine turned off when he is not around is because if his PC were to be attacked, as long as he is at his workstation he can address the threat immediately before it can do any damage. If he were to leave his machine turned on while he was away, it gives an infected file an opportunity to do its thing undisturbed or a zero-day vulnerability to be exploited on a piece of running software. But I mean, he also kind of wears a tin foil hat.

Any virus that wants to be undetectable, is, and if a virus really wants you to have some reason to not just end the task or shut of your PC they just delete the boot directory, like memz does, there's next to nothing you can do against a well codes virus, plus turning your PC off and on is worse for previously mentioned viruses that just fuck with the boot directory, there is nothing that he could do against a threat like that and he might just turn it on to find no OS

I have had pc since the first one came out in the 80’s. i upgraded every 5 years or so. I only turned them off when a reboot was needed. I do not remember many failures. One of my old old mechanical hard drives finally failed after at least 10 years. I usually used old hard drives as extra internal ones when I upgraded computers. You give great advice. Your videos are very detailed and as accurate as can be. Many people just like to mess with their computers. They go nuts when it takes 10 seconds longer to boot up because they boot up many times a day. I always left mine on all the time. The first pcs did not have operating systems with hibernate or sleep modes. My first one only had DOS. windows wasn’t invented yet. I agree with everything you say. I just don’t care about saving a few cents per day on electricity and prefer to only spend the time necessary on my computer. So leaving it on suits my personality and lifestyle. I think I will consider using that hybrid mode that I never understood until this video. Thanks for a great video.

I get into about this all the time. My pcs have been running non stop for the last 30 years, all of them still run. Temp changes are what kills circuitry especially if you have pc in cold area. Starting it up heats up the circuits and causes expansion and contraction when cooling off. It doesnt take a genius to see how this can affect your main board over time. Let them run and they always atay at same temp and avoid expansion /contraction.

When it comes to electronic components that generate a lot of heat (like computers), the heating and cooling cycles that occur with power on and power off does cause expansion and contraction of those components and of connecting wire conductors. Excessive cycling of power, and the effects upon conductors, will cause metal fatigue due to expansion (when hot) and contraction (when cool). For this reason, a constant surface temperature is ideal and will increase the life of electronic components. I never power off my desktop or laptop (unless I have to pack it up for travel), and I have never had either one crap out on me.

Mechanical drives had no issues until 2018 when I had a HDD failure on one of the drives, and that's when I turned it off for an extended period for the first time since it was built. I've recently rebuilt the machine and it's back up and running.

However, due to the mess of the ACPI standard, sleep and hibernation isn't always reliable. Up through the years and we still see, the motherboard manufacturers still release a lot of BIOS' with Sleep and hibernation state fixes. I used to use it a while ago, but then I stopped because of all the bugs associated with it and often having to boot up normally anyway. And as for my laptops? I kicked Microsoft off them several years ago, the sleep state things are super broken under other operating systems than Windows and a pain to deal with. So instead I power them on and off rather than relying on any of those features, although I tweak them to use as little power as possible when idle.

dunno about sleep but hibernation brings a lot of sticky bugs.. it never worked well in windows :D even an electricity outage at the right time can cause that. one time i was booting up my system and electricity just went out for a couple of secs. then i booted up my system (again) to see that my av is crashing whenever i try to start it up. i did everything i could and it was still crashing. it finally worked after a format and reinstall of os. i dont want sticky bugs like that all over my system. so i never hibernate/sleep my system. i just leave it on if im going for a short time and shut it down when i go to sleep.

Luiz Henrique Laurini Nice surname you got. However, these sleep and hibernation issues is Microsoft's fault from the 90s with the ACPI standard and how crappy it has been since. And now they are allowed to do it again with Secure Boot and UEFI. In any case, Microsoft should never be allowed to develop standards, only implement existing ones. Their standards just cause issues further down the line and aren't that open for others to use. Vendor lockin is a really bad thing.

If I'm using a desktop computer it depends: first of all, if I have to go to meeting, go on a break or go to lunch I lock the computer and it goes to sleep, second, at the end of the day I will most likely finish whatever I'm doing, log out and shut down, third, sometimes a broadcast email comes out regarding an software update that IT wants to push out to affected computers - if this happens, then I leave the computer on so that they can run a batch file to make the installation happen.

Normally, I have nothing but praise for these videos. But Linus, you really missed it BIG TIME on this one. The problem is the glaring omission you made by ignoring Microsoft Windows instability!!! Not to mention, program instability. Since Microsoft first introduced the sleep and hibernate modes (back in the day when computers took "forever" to boot into Windows), these modes have ALWAYS been buggy. Even today, with Win 10, both sleep mode and hibernate mode are still not 100% reliable and the longer time you go between shut downs, the worse things get. The reasons for this are varied and complicated. It relates to the quality of drivers, applications and Windows, itself. Application memory leaks can slowly eat away at Windows resources the longer they run without being shut down and restarted. Drivers that tested "okay" with Windows, suddenly exhibit problems after a Windows system update. For example, a graphics driver that tolerated sleep and hibernate before the Windows update, may crash when the computer wakes from sleep or hibernate after the Windows update. Win 10 has been especially bad in this regard and appears to be a step backward regarding sleep and hibernate mode stability. And there are some applications that have never worked well with sleep mode and hibernate mode (such as CAD, 3D render, and media creation programs). So, the decision to use sleep mode and hibernate mode depends, in large part, on what you are doing with your computer and how stable your system is when waking from these modes. For many engineers, 3D modelers and media creators, both modes are best disabled. I fall into this category. And, since my notebook has only solid state internal storage (four M.2 SSDs and one 2.5-inch SSD), the boot time is so fast that there's very little disadvantage to shutting down each time I close the lid. And for readers who are unaware, you can configure your power button and lid closure to do what you want -- including having them perform a shut down instead of invoking sleep or hibernate mode.

@HummingbirdSound
@HummingbirdSound 7 жыл бұрын
+ Tom Klippy There is no risk of damaging the PC right away (it won't blow up suddenly). But it will eventually affect your PC components over time and they will age way quicker (so their life spawn will be reduced overall). I never turned off my PC in almost 4 years (only restarted for updates), and I never had any issues with any of its piece components ever. And I'm a hardcore gamer. All you need to do is cool down your PC correctly; as long as it's not burning all day long, you should be just fine with never turning it down. And I would stress that optimal airflow is better than water cooling (except for the motherboard maybe, for which I would buy a Corsair water cooler instead of taking the risk of building a faulty one). If you know how to place your fans correctly (and if you know how to choose them wisely), you won't ever overheat your graphic card. Or any other component. There are plenty of tutorials online about this topic; look it up and enjoy your everlasting machine. :)

My computers stay on all the time. I have them set to turn off the screens after a period of time. I have them set to be able to receive automatic updates overnight when I'm sleeping. And in today's computers the defrag procedure can be set to run automatically as well. So that's set too. My computer can perform these things by itself while I sleep. That's a benefit of leaving it on. You can set your computers to shut the hdd off too but still keep the rest of the system on. Usually once a week I'll at least do a restart to allow my computers to clean out the memory and to allow my systems to save they're current states at the time.

Also running MSI afterburner monitor in the background and 60 fps limiter using rivatuner statistic server. went to sleep, after 10 hours I wake it and continue playing for another 5 hours with no problems. I guess my rig is magical or something. Did I mention my ram has lifetime warranty? Also I used to own Iphone 5s and had the phone for 2 years and almost never turned it off. Ran fine till I switched to Nexus 6p. Ram didnt burst into flames.

My PC is on all hours of the day, generally. If I'm home, I'm using it frequently. I use videos on the computer to help me fall asleep, and they're on loop while I'm sleeping. I looked up this video to see if this is bad for the computer.

I accidentally left my iPad on all night. It stayed on the same screen, for like 8 hours, with brightness all the way up. Will that damage anything?

Nah it should be fine. The best thing for iOS devices is to shut them down every night. Trust me, in some months your iPad/iPhone will run twice as fast as your friends ones

Don't be surprised if your computer ceases working properly if you have an uptime in the weeks. Services might fail, simple as that.

Well, not really. A Intel Xeon is designed to be on all the time, due to it being a processor for work, or data servers. My Xeon has never died on me so... Yea, it's been on for a long time.

RainbowMiner2004 open task manager, go to performance, and look at the bottom right where it says up time. It will tell you exactly how long it's been on.

I almost always just completely shut it down. Sometimes I'll put it to sleep if I'm going to use it again very soon. But rarely. I usually just shut it down I have an SSD so it boots up real fast anyway. I never leave it running all the time. No matter what people say it actually does wear out your hardware quicker.
