I would like to carry on: I would have liked to carry on: I would have liked to have carried on. What's the diff.??

Hi Jack! Nice to hear from you. "would" is the past tense form of "will" but it is a strange word because it is only used as a modal auxiliary verb and can be used in different ways. In the sentence, "I would like to carry on", "would like to" means the same as "want to" but it is less direct and therefore is more formal or polite. In the other sentences with "have", "would have" is being used to re-analyse a situation from the past and talk about a different possible outcome. "I would have died" if I hadnt been wearing my seatbelt.". Interestingly the perfect tenses use "have" as their auxiliary verb and you can see how it ties in with them because they are both ways of looking at how a past moment affects a later moment.
