10:18 TAG hasn't taken off because they don't grade any cards older than 1989. And they don't make that information readily available. What they should do is just market themselves as the leader in "new card grading", explain how their technology is better for new card grading, and try and take over that market.

Regarding the Bowman Tiffany PSA mislabeled card, I'm not sure if ebay Authenticity will catch that error. Ebays Authenticity Guarantee is to determine if a card is Authentic, and if the card matches the Listing. Same with graded cards, ie if the case is authentic and matches the listing. Ebay are not "Graders"- they do not and should not be relied upon to "double check" if Grading companies ie., PSA, SGC etc have made errors WITHIN the case. Checking the correctness of a label would he akin to the same thing as looking at a PSA 10 card and thinking the card inside is misgraded and it should be a 9. So do they reject the card because they see it as graded the wrong condition by PSA? Ebays service with graded cards is to make sure the PSA case has not been tampered with, and once determined that the PSA case is Authentic and untampered with, and is good, then to verify that the PSA card ie, the label matches the Listing. Doing anything more is beyond the scope of what is expected for that service by ebay. Maybe they will catch it as not being a tiffany, but if not, and they pass it thru, it is not an error on ebays part for doing so. Else do we expect these guys at ebay to be such experts and identify every single card parallel, insert, variations etc... as if they get a PSA card with the label stating a Row 3 flair level 9 purple parallel photo variation reverse negative tiger striped donut holes platinum edition, is indeed the card that is in the case. Do we expect them to know and identify that the correct card is in every single psa case they get? That would be ridiculous and way beyond the scope and skill requirement for that service. Sorry if this is all mumbled as I am typing upside down on my phone while half asleep in bed

Thanks! I used the PSA Vault for a 20 card card test run and though I wasn't happy with the grade received on one card (a 6!!!), the excersise was to just experience the process. All cards were put at auction over a 2 week period after grading and I loved it! Cards sold for more overall based on comps (one 3 x's higher!) than expected. Thanks for this Q&A!!!! Good stuff!
@jebr28j2 ай бұрын
People should realize that PSA vault eBay has a $5 minimum fee. So if you sell a card for $25, you at minimum pay 20% commission, where eBay is around 13%.

Ebay already has that blind bid auction system. You put in the max bid you're willing to pay then ebay increases your bid in increments as needed. I think the ebay system is better than what that guy suggested in his question. You'd have people WAY overbidding and that will throw off values of cards and comps.

I do not think eBay authenticity would save the buyer on the mislabeled Griffey PSA rookie. I thought for slabs, eBay authenticity is just authenticating the slab, not the card in the slab - right? So since the slab is an authentic PSA slab, although mislabeled, it will still pass.

While it may not be the point of the '53 Robinson with the pinhole isn't anyone else curious as to how in the hell for a $400 card there was an additional $164 on top of that? Even with a 20% hammer price and expensive insured shipping it would be around $500. Unless this person collects out of country so the shipping is massive I don't get it. Thoughts?

This was my card and yes it was upsetting. The $164 included buyer premium, my state tax (CA ~10%), shipping/insurance. It was from Goldin. I’m happy with the card but prob my last time buying from them.

My theory with the likes of tag not taking off more is that the majority of people grading (ignoring set registry collectors) are just doing it for the flip or gamble and they're after 10s , not necessarily the grading or transparency

QUESTION: What is the history of "chase cards"? I remember chasing 1986 Topps Vince Colmen rookie cards. I am asking because I assume their have been chase cards in each year since around the time rookie cards started being sought after, just as I remeber the big 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly chase....perhaps the first big chase card...i don't know. Have you considered doing a video on chase cards from each year? I ask becuase you are one of the few people with enough knowledge to perhaps pull this task off with a little research from the department.

Player Issue. I think players do/did get allocated a certain amount of their own cards sometimes. Those were marked Player Issued. So they were never put in packs, but given to players to have or give to family etc.. Hopefully someone can verify if I am right or not, but remember seeing that somewhere.

The idea of TAG intrigues me. I’m not big into grading but I would truly consider them. If PSA has a similar service and charged 5 bucks less and put it in a standard slab but somehow marked it PSA AI or something I think many would go for that. In the end it would be in a PSA holder and the grade would likely be spot on, maybe within a 1/2 grade plus or minus.

I thought that ebay only guaranteed the case when authenticating slabs and that the card is the same that is in the listing. I didn't think that they confirmed that the label is correct compared to the card. If they mislabel a refractor as a base in the slab, are you saying that it would pass authentication?

As for TAG grading, daily I comb through an insane amount of eBay listings looking for cards I might want to add to my collection, normally searching by player. On top of that for all the major auction sites I scroll through virtually every listing. _Never_ have I come across a card graded by TAG. I'm sure if I searched 'TAG graded' in eBay there would be listings but the fact that I've never seen a single listing by happenstance makes it clear that they have no traction whatsoever at this point. (unfortunately)

I’m not sure eBay AG will catch the Griffey Bowman. There have been cases in the past when they pass cards in a similar situation, like that Michael Jordan PMG that was colored red with a marker. eBay AG verifies the slab, and not the card itself. If that Griffey slab is real and not broken, I’d expect it to pass.

Just curious, but why don't you collect any of Cal Ripkens cards since he retired? I have only collected one player since 1988 and I still go after some of his new low numbered autograph cards.
@collectorinvestordealer2 ай бұрын
Ripken has way too many post-playing career cards that it would be too vast to collect
@floridamaddogg2 ай бұрын
@collectorinvestordealer gotcha....I completely understand that as the player I collect (Nolan Ryan) is the same way. But what I have been doing is collecting like one low numbered auto card of his from each major set, year not mattering too much. Just which ever year I like the way it looks the most. So for example, I don't have an auto card of his from Topps Sterling or Gilded yet, so will search for one of those that meets what I want, be it in PSA 10 slab, or design, etc.
Well with a $1,000 budget, a PSA10 sells for $2000+ and a PSA9 sells for $175-225.

I have always thought that cards of a player after they are no longer playing (or managing) is pure nonsense. Not only is it basically the company trying to print money in a lot of cases (see Jordan), but it makes collecting most or all cards of a player impossible. Like Chris I have zero interest in cards past a player's career. This is especially tricky with some older/war/pre war players. People sometimes don't realize for example that a card from the 1940s can't be a playing days card of Ruth so its value, to me anyway, is virtually nothing. If you go down this rabbit hole there are people who also create cards on their own and sell them on eBay. Some of these cards even look good/legit. Still, I see no sense in such a thing. It's fine if you do I just really don't get it.
