Re Health system ,even if you have an S1 you have to pay ,for bed,food ,etc. If you need for instance ,an operation for hip replacement you have to pay for the replacement hip which can be up to £6000 ,the operation cost is covered .You can also get a bill for blood if you need some and also costs of drugs on prescription ,so make sure you got a healthy bank balance for unforeseen health problems and no you cannot expect social benifit from the BG government as it is mandatory to sign that right away to stay here.

Hi David. I hired a Migration Lawyer for my residency permit. The problem I had was (other than the Visa)...need a bank account in Bulgaria to apply for a residency permit...in order to open a bank account, you need a residency permit...I had troubles. So after I finally found a bank who would accept me...I went to my wife and said "Find an Immigration Lawyer for me NOW because I'm not going through this go here go there BS anymore" So, it's been ALMOST 5 years, I'm getting ready to apply for my Permanent Residency Permit next year. It's tough for American's here...everyone thinks we are CIA.

As all the prices goes up, especially rent prices, taxes and home prices. Good bless you. Enjoy your lovely time in Bulgaria. People doesn't realy know what they have been given at this territory. I think a lot of your experiences have now been supersceded post brexit. No mention of Dvisa, neccassary expat health insurance etc? I realise you are talking about your experience three and a half years ago but people should be aware that it is much more difficult now. NB, your BG health insurance does not cover everything, far from it.
