The «problem» (!!) with PHEV is that you can get one almost at the same price as an hybrid in certain provinces. For instance Quebec gives up to 5,000$ for cars having a battery larger than 15 kWh. Combined with the 5,000$ coming from the federal, you can get a PHEV 10,000$ cheaper than the MSRP !!!

That's precisely how our family ended up with the Santa Fe PHEV. With the incentive, the price difference was negligible.

Have 2 phev. Ioniq and Escape. Plug them in daily. Will save almost $4 to 5k in gas over our old MDX with Escape over the year with driving about 25 to 30 thousand km or 18k miles (winter tires are fine don't need AWD). The Ioniq has been worry free over 5 years. Put gas in every couple of months. Averaging 4.4L per 100 km or 52mpg in winter in Ontario with Escape (50% highway). Get 2 year old to save on depreciation. Hybrids are excellent. Our 2007 prius had no problems over 250k. Only an accident took it out. Love that you guys have practical side as well as car enthusiasts side. Always a joy to see you post.

Thanks for recommending that buyers crunch the numbers on the PHEV vs HEV conversation. We bought a Santa Fe PHEV and did it largely because the payback period between the gas model and the PHEV ended up being about 2.5 years which made it a no brainer.

Toyota's decision to invest and promote hybrids was the right move. As I've said for a few years (and was mentioned in this video), an EV uses about 65 times the batteries needed versus a regular hybrid. A plug-in hybrid uses about 20 times versus the regular hybrid. If the goal is "reducing emissions", then you need to replace as many vehicles as possible with some sort of vehicle that uses much less fuel. So you can remove one gas vehicle off the road and replace it with one EV and reduce the emissions of one vehicle by 100%. If you promote hybrids, you can replace 70 gas vehicles with 70 hybrids for the same battery resource amount and reduce the emissions of 70 vehicles by about 50% (since hybrids use about half the fuel of gas only counterparts). In terms of reducing emissions, that is a substantial improvement in the overall reduction of emissions.

Excellent analysis, but comparing a PHEV to an EV it’s more like an eight to one ratio, paraphrasing the statement of a Akio Toyoda, and assuming a 40 mile PHEV battery and a 320 mile EV battery. (And curiously, my 41 mile battery always charges to over 50 miles in warm weather.)
@jeffer1101
@jeffer1101 4 ай бұрын
@@billurban1581 in terms of battery size, most EV batteries are about 4-5 times the size of most PHEV batteries. Most EV batteries are about 70-80 kWhr, most PHEV batteries are about 20 kWhr and most regular hybrids are 1-1.5 kWhr.

My brother asked me why I bought an EV. I said that I like the feeling of driving one. He asked "Oh, you mean you feel good about saving the environment?" I said "No, I like the feeling of the smooth, quiet acceleration." That's a longwinded way of saying that there are some of us who prefer the "soul" of an EV to an ICE vehicle, and it has nothing to do with spreadsheet calculations. BTW, I love the show and don't miss an episode.

I tried to talk my mom into getting a Crosstrek but unfortunately there isn't a dealership in the city she lives in S. Ontario. In the end, she got an amazing deal on a year old Qashai and she loves it. I drove it around S. Ontario (city and highway) with her last autumn and was quite impressed. But still wish she got the Crosstrek (my mom is 82 and I would have felt better if she had the Subaru all wheel drive to deal with the winters). Also thank you for continuing to educate your viewers about how great a hybrid can be. I have friends looking for an electric car to replace one or both of their cars. But they rarely drive (use their golf cart around town in S. California) so I have been telling them to just buy a RAV4...like Zack would recommend.

Data analysis available on Canada Energy Regulator website shows that a Chevrolet Bolt has approximately 2.0g GHG/100 km vs the Toyota Prius Eco at 96.2g/100km. So 45x times the emission. A typical hybrid has around a 25% reduction from the equivalent ICE model. So there is a drastic reduction with BEV’s. Hence the rebates from the carbon tax for them. Not the 4 to 1 ratio reduction Zack mentions.

Zack, while I once enjoyed the economy of a Prius hybrid, other variables besides mpg go into the decision for me now. I can see you appreciate performance as I do. With my S60 PHEV I now enjoy having 455hp and 523 lb-ft on tap while getting twice the Prius mpg . . . as in 100+ mpg* which, as Andrea said, requires charging every night. Yesterday I drove 51 miles and burned .2 gal. Many days I burn no gas. Those without the discipline necessary to plug in every night should not buy a PHEV. Everyone has different criteria for the driving experience. This combination of economy, comfort, and performance happens to suit me perfectly. * 13,500 miles since 11/1/22, 134 gallons burned. (My last BMW ICE got 29.7 mpg lifetime driven the same way on the same roads.) But it does cost ~$35 a month to charge the S60 battery, at 16.8¢ per kWh in Pennsylvania.

This is one of the big advantages of a PHEV vs full BEV. PHEVs have smaller batteries. You can make 4 PHEVs for the same amount of lithium as 1 Model aY. And for 90% of the driving that 90% of people do, that PHEV will have the same CO2 output as a Tesla (zero)

i see one problem with PHEV, they have a lot going on, many things need to be maintained. its like owning 2 engines depending on the powertrain...could be more costly to replace down the road compared to just a battery swap@@jhaydraude
@jhaydraude
@jhaydraude 4 ай бұрын
@@yakinikutabetai4780 valid concern but it's not extreme. The Toyota Prime line uses the same engine and transmission system as their rock solid hybrids. I own a Mitsubishi which does not even have a transmission -- just a simple old school 4 banger that powers a generator and a single speed gearbox for highway driving. Pretty simple stuff when you get down to it (10 year warranty doesn't hurt though) In terms of extra weight, the ICE powertrain + the 18-20kWh battery of a PHEV is less than the weight of an 80kWh battery in a pure EV. I don't think battery swap is a good reference example. You could replace a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder several times for less than you can replace 80kWh of battery.
@billurban1581
@billurban1581 4 ай бұрын
Mitigating factors: Remember that neither the engine or the motor are running full time. My engine may have 30,000 miles when the odometer says 100,000. And these are mostly steady state cruising miles, not stop and go. And how much less money to eventually swap a 40 mile battery rather than a 300 mile battery? (That 300 mile battery cost may total the car, or require another loan.) And how much better is 110V for the battery compared to 240V, or supercharger? It gets curiouser and curiouser :^) @@yakinikutabetai4780

@lsft
@lsft 4 ай бұрын
@@blackjmyntrn there is a balance on battery size and weight to be the most efficient. If you put a 50 kWh battery to a Prius, you'll lose space and also efficiency. You won't be getting the mpg you'll get today. I believe they increased the new Prius Prime to 13.6kwh. The goal is to have 100km PHEV.

In Canada there are situations where rebates really skew things. For instance, in New Brunswick the Hyundai Tuscon HEV is actually more expensive than the PHEV version because you get 10 grand off the PHEV. That makes the PHEV a no brainer even if you only charge it once in a while.

Zack, you are so right, desperately need refresh or redo of the otherwise just right-sized QX50.... too bad they dropped the rear drive orientation and Z-car based V6 and nice suspension of the previous gen--They tried too hard to be different in the wrong way and got too cute with the variable compression unit they have now, and went CVT,...but given they did all that, they mostly need a new motor and transmission worthy of the supposed premium brand.., That said, it's too bad the QX60 hasn't gotten the buyers' attention it deserves - it's one of the better 3 row unibody choices out there. And, they will never third row a RAV4.

Prius Prime (the plug-in model) typically delivered better MPG after depletion than a regular Prius. The reason was it could still take advantage of the EV and having that larger battery meant being able to capture more electricity when braking.

We have two Infiniti's in our garage... a QX80 and a QX60. We considered Lexus and Acura, but... Infiniti does such a great job with their large naturally aspirated engines, styling, luxuriousness, ride quality, quietness, roominess... and it's just plain a better value too. Their achilles heel in the past has been their terrible CVT's and outdated infotainment. Both of those issues are gone (at least with the QX80 and QX60). I'm glad to see you're giving them the prop's they deserve the last couple of years.

PHEVs save much more on larger vehicles like the Pacifica, CX-90, Outlander where the MPG in hybrid mode isn't nearly as good. But also look for a heat pump or PTC heater that'll heat the cabin using electricity, otherwise it'll run the gas engine and ruin the PHEV advantage for half the year; for example the Kia Niro has a PTC heater, the KIA Sportage and Sorento do not.

About those used Mark 7.5 GTI's, they were and are still great cars but over time same old VW thing of repair costs creaping up as they age. Even though it's a less refined car, the previous gen WRX... if and really big if.... if not thrashed or modded... is probably a more reliable buy at this point.

With regard to the hybrid/plug-in hybrid debate, in the San Francisco Bay Area, solo drivers of plug-in hybrids are allowed to use the HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes, while solo drivers of conventional hybrid vehicles are not. I know a driver who purchased a plug-in Prius Prime mainly because his daily work commute includes a long stretch of HOV lane travel, resulting in a much quicker commute.

Just a clarification on the PHEV - you do not NEED a plug in (as stated at 5:03) though it sure does make more sense.. Also you can choose what mode to run in, total EV, combination or total hybrid. My 2018 Outlander PHEV can also charge when driving (not highly economical - 8 L/100km- but useful) and also has variable regen using paddles - or I can use it in just combo/hybrid mode where the software decides whether or not the motor runs.. Plugging it in is (at this time around $7-$13 per month) very cheap. I just put 34 liters in last week and did over 968 km. My 2018 (bought 2 1/2 years ago) has a bit of decreased range range (anywhere from 17km when very cold to 36km during the summer) but the primary use is to go to our local village which is about 16km round trip - no gas used. When out of battery we get around 7 l/100km. I fill up maybe every two or three months. Now if only the federal government would also apply a rebate on used PHEV/EVs! BTW love your vids.

My experience is similar. Had a 2022 Volvo with a 22 mile battery that cost ~$13 a month to charge @ 16.8 cents per kWh in Pennsylvania. That car got 58 mpg lifetime. Now have a 41 mile battery, costs ~$35 a month to charge. This car got 104 mpg first full year. (My last ICE got 29.7 mpg lifetime.) I top off once a month when the electric bill arrives to reconcile total cost to propel - 7.94 pennies per mile first year. (BTW, the '22 had 400 HP, '23 has 455 HP.) A comment on the regen from a 143HP motor - I am confident this current car will never wear out the brake pads.

I think the point about NEEDing to plug in is that it's a pretty big waste of money and resources if you don't. Your Outlander with a dead battery gets worse field economy than most pure gas guzzlers in its class. That said, it's not always all about the fuel economy. I've got an Outlander too and compared to a similar ICE or traditional hybrid the driving experience of the Outlander in series hybrid mode is orders of magnitude better.

IDK why they aren't an option on every Mid-sized crossover and definitely every SUV. Foldaway 3rd rows are super valuable to me. It's almost like different people have different requirements for their vehicles.

Phev in appearance and feel are a bridge to Bev. Pure hybrid just seam like efficient ICE vehicles. I agree with this although you make a good point Although by 2035 most manufacturers will be making at least one phev. ( unless they have gone all Bev or maybe fuel cell)

Wow, what's with all the spam bots lol. Anyway, I really like the Q60 but you're right - they've totally left the brand to rot which is really sad. Is that a reflection of parent brand Nissan struggling? Also, the rav totally doesn't need a 3rd row. Toyota has a lot of cars (way too much) with some already having 3 rows.

Cars are getting huge. A 2023 Rav4 is bigger than the original 7 seater minivans. Some of us don't want a large SUV or wouldn't have the space to park one even if we did. But we still have kids and those kids have friends and occasionally it's helpful if you're able to squeeze those 2 extra middle schoolers in on the way to band practice. A Highlander doesn't help people like that. A RAV4 with a 3rd row would (Outlander and Tiguan do)

It was so easy in the old days to choose by cylinder number 4,6 or 8. We are certainly spoiled for choice now given the models to choose from.

Zack I agree that Hybrid has role. Same reason I think it is a miss for Honda’s to not have the new Pilot Hybridized so all their offerings have that option. I just don’t think we are there for EVs given the winter environment some of us live in. Heck I don’t even see as much Teslas on the road when winter comes. E.g.: today it’s -15 degC with the windchill… Yea the Grand Highlander is made from unobtainium…😂

In the redesign of the g37 they took away the optional sport seats which were better than BMW and the hydraulic steering. Bean counters killed the brand. Stout engine with good fuel economy.

Hi dears, thanks a lot for this video. I think until then we will have 1000km range in EV’s and have 100km Ev range in Plug-in hybrids we can’t rely on these two type of cars for normal size cars but for small one it’s ok

That full size Infiniti SUV looks absolutely sensational! I hope they make it. The largest Infinitis (Q56?) were never great looking. But this new one? It has a bit of an Escalade/Range Rover mix, properly gorgeous. I haven’t been the biggest fan of Infiniti (last great car they made was the first/2nd gen. Q45s… loved them!) and I’m not really impressed (never actually) of the Cadillac Escalade (other than that Avalanche pickup version)… but however they did it… this new one looks great. Let’s hope they make it. Thanks for the video.

Toyota 1-6-90 rule. The materials it takes to make one BEV, would make 6 PHEV, or 90 hybrids. Making hybrids the best if you judge by impact on environment.

As an owner of a PHEV for 3 years, I recommend plug-ins only to people who typically make short trips within or slightly over the EV range between charges. That way you will be driving mostly on battery power and see very good gas mileage, even with the occasional longer road trip thrown in. We're at 58 mpg over 3 years now with our large SUV...better mileage than my neighbor's Prius hybrid!

@@andreaspencer9813 Not too difficult, a 40 mile PHEV battery would suffice for most commutes. “According to ABC News [citing US census bureau data], the average American commute is 16 miles to work each way, with a daily commute totaling nearly an hour round trip. Another source reports: “On average, 94% of all workers in the U.S. spend 27.6 minutes to commute each way to work and travel for an average of 18.8 miles to work each way.” The 41 mile battery in my Volvo does a nice job for me. You will recall, in your Volvo test, the battery charged to beyond the 41 miles. In warm weather mine never fails to charge past 50. I have a screengrab of the “high water mark”, 57! Even for longer commutes, it’s hardly an issue. I recently drove 51 miles and burned .2 gallons. Congrats to you both on the great channel, keep up the good work.

Tiguan is getting a new version in 2025 from European model that already mean released in 2024. New Traverse looks more GM truck like boxie shape, I have the first Gen Traverse love but hard on gas and the 3.6 chain stretch is very real problem.

I drive 30 kms a day and I am sticking with gas. No place to charge as my building is too old and where I work is a gravel and dirt driveway that becomes a mud puddle in the rain and an ice rink in winter. My next vehicle will be a jdm right hand drive imported Land Cruiser, Pajero super, or a patrol. Simple is to fix, order the parts online and no safety tech that causes more electrical problems and interference. It’s why I hate Subarus with the new three camera eyesight system. I work for an auto glass repair shop and it takes longer now to calibrate the eyesight with the new windshield than it did before.
