Possibly the best Q,C and Cars yet. Noticeably more upbeat. Maybe its the upcoming vacation. Speaking of which, last Father’s Day when I kayaked over to and around both Little and Big Green (Aylen) there was somebody at the furthest East(?) cottage who was clearly practicing (new to?)… going through the scales on a trumpet. It definitely stood out. Enjoy your mini vacation, this is also my first season going to cottages without both the kids. I … unapologetically find it so much more relaxing (my wife would absolutely agree), its probably the slower mornings, less snacks/games, more adult conversations with friends, less of a rush, less stuff etc.). I think PHEVs are the way to go right now... they will get a person used to some form of electrification without breaking the bank and having range anxiety... let consumers allow the market to shake out in order to overcome all the fears about EVs (i.e. range anxiety, charging networks, price, etc.)... this will also give the average consumer time to see what battery innovations (i.e. solid-state) emerge that could overcome most of the negatives today's EVs possess.

You can also make 2-3 PHEVs for every BEV. For most commuters this will reduce emissions to effectively zero except for the occasional long trip. 😊

Added complexity not always the best, one has to maintain engine and battery components. With full BEV no transmission fluid, annual engine oil changes etc etc

@@ibz.a Well, some cars (Toyota Prius PHEV, corolla HEV) with added complexity have proven themselves over time. They are reliable and cheaper to own despite the scheduled oil & fluid changes. I have the following issues with BEV; (1) the efficient ones with decent range are not affordable by many, (2) they cost a lot more to insure, (3) If you do not have a changing infrastructure at home, it may be stressful relying on the public charging infrastructure, (4) doing a road trip of 300 miles (or more) are more expensive and takes a long time than a comparable Toyota hybrid/PHev. (5) Lastly, out-of-warranty battery expenses easily wipe out any savings made.

We purchased a used 2020 Ford Fusion plug-in hybrid with 8k miles about 6 months go. Although we prefer SUVs we wanted an everyday driver with great gas mileage. With our driving patterns here in the suburban Portland, OR area we usually get 43-48 mpg in hybrid mode. If we plug in and charge the battery overnight we get a combined fuel mileage of 115-120 mpg. Being the top of the line Titanium model, the comfort, handling and amenities are top notch. The only negative is that the traction battery takes up a lot of trunk space.

I think regarding PHEV vs EV, it depends on where you are, I own a new condo in Burnaby and Coquitlam, both has 15+ charging stations, for me, EV is the absolute way to go, with PHEV you still have to do engine/tranny oil changes and risk of ICE problems etc, plus I get 2 grand more for BC EV rebate, also BC has 4000 charging stations across the province and with the amount of people here, it's rush hour bumper to bumper stop and go regardless what day or time it is

Really enjoy these episodes. Currently have a 2016 Lexus GS 350 - great car (except for one thing)! It has a CD player and I do use it, which is part of the fabulous Mark Levinson sound system. Your other comment about the heated steering wheel however is right on, mine is poor, and only heats the 3 & 6 o’clock position to a luke warm. Probably the one thing I would change on my car.

Have fun on your vacay! Agree that hybrids are the way forward, until there’s a breakthrough in battery tech. I’m in TX, and an EV might work in the city and with shorter commutes, but if you have to drive between cities here, that just doesn’t work. The earth-raping required to make batteries is too often overlooked in this conversation, too.

I think EVs are good for some/many, hybrid are good for most. A mix is best vs all one type. I find the mining for the battery both underdiscussed and over emphasized. There are plenty of things we humans consume that have devastating consequences so the environment but it’s not covered as much as battery component mining. The some if the same people making the largest noise about it, don’t really care, they just hate change.

Think this question is right on topic for this video. (Maybe when you get to it after your vacation it could be even more relevant). Could I ask your opinion? Looking at getting an ev and can't decide between the Ariya Evolve + or the 2024 Kona electric. Since the Kona isn't out yet I find it difficult to choose. Kia Niro EV is an option, but not quite sold on it. Thanks!

I think between PHEV and Hybrid for the future, you have to go Hybrid if your goal is lower CO2. This forces reduction. I feel pretty confident based on how much many people seem to prefer gas vehicles over environmental concerns, that if people are forced into PHEV's, they are just not going to plug in.

Andrea and Zak love you guys! ❤ Glad you had the Porsche talk.. I just bought a CPO 2019 Macan S with 18k miles. I really wanted a 2023 but just too much as I don’t want to sell my other daily.. 23 Toyota Venza Limited 😂 The 19 also has a front bumper splitter that isn’t on the new ones. But I would take the new one with piano black over all these buttons 😂…for that extra Horse Power. Definitely love the Venza Hybrid and I do not want a full EV so it works perfect. A plug in Venza would be nice but I imagine that is on the way.

@@annv4338 congratulations! For me I have horrible blind spots in every car as I am only 5’0 but the 360 cameras in the limited really help. I feel Venza has less blind spots then other cars. However bumping your head getting in and out is an issue I and other have to watch out for. I almost knocked myself out the other day 😆

Virtually everything I read suggests EV prices will continue to decline. This is primarily due to one factor, Tesla. They are pushing the industry to change the way cars are built and reduce manufacturing cost. The new Giga factory being built in Mexico will be the most efficient auto manufacturing plant on the planet. They will be reducing cost the only question is how much. Other legacy automakers will need to compete with Tesla. If they don't and let Tesla have the market to themselves their future could be in doubt. It is not just the vehicles but how they are made that really sets Tesla apart.

PHEV caution: If you drive most of the EV range daily, you are deeply-cycling the battery EVERY DAY. In an EV, you might cycle weekly. My 2017 Sonata PHEV battery died at 45,000 miles, and it took 6 months to get a (free) replacement. WATCH OUT for any car with a limited production run.

I keep telling my sister - oh the V6 Pacifica AWD - it will carry plywood and occasionally (her son is 17 now so he does not socialize with us much sadly) passengers. But is it like telling someone - oh it is only missing the sunroof and they never use it but must have it anyway; so who care, your air is only always anyways and who wants that noise - but it is like a go nowhere conversation 😑(I had a sunroof MY DAD PUT IN on my first car and swore I always would BUT no car since as it was always a savings; and I thought "eh, who cares"). But the point - is that a Caravan is not cool enough - so SUV for her.

I have a general question regarding all plugins. After the electric-only range is depleted, will the vehicle solely rely on gasoline, or will it recharge the batteries like a conventional hybrid through regenerative braking?

Regarding your comments on the Macan (5:00), I don't understand why Porsche keeps putting highly reflective, fingerprint-maintaining "piano black" surfaces in their cars, when it seems like 100% of the buying public absolutely hates it. It's a very common complaint, and I have never heard anybody defend the "piano black" in the interiors of ANY brands' cars, let alone say that they actually like it. Mind-boggling. Everything should be matte-black without the ability to hold fingerprints and smudges easily.

Regarding PHEVs with more range (19:25), I think that the realistic minimum all-electric range in a "useful", practical PHEV is 40 miles (65 km). Less all-electric range than that is a joke. Very few PHEVs sold new today get 40+ miles of all-electric range in local (stop-and-go, city) driving (i.e., < 45 mph); the RAV4 Prime is perhaps the best right now, at 50 miles, followed by the forthcoming 2024 Cayenne E-Hybrid at 45 miles and the current XC60 T8 "Recharge" (and related Volvo PHEVs) at 40 miles. VW has the tech (from Porsche) to make its Tiguan and Atlas Cross Sport and Touareg all PHEVs with range > 40 miles, but they don't make them available in North America; hopefully that will happen. The Tourareg has a PHEV version in Germany, but I think it still only has the 14-kWh battery pack with crappy all-electric range (< 30 miels).

2024 news flash: The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) GreenerCars ratings are out. They evaluate each model year 2024 car on its cost to human health from air pollution associated with vehicle manufacturing and disposal, the production and distribution of fuel or electricity, and vehicle tailpipe emissions. The greenest car is a PRIUS PHEV, better than any EV. In fact five of the twelve ACEEE greenest cars are PHEVs or hybrids.

Have a wonderful vacation but don’t come to West Coast of Florida it 108 degrees now at 11am going to 112 - I pretty much stay home during the day at go out after sunset and it’s still hot. - is there a comfortable SUV with minimal infotainment center - all I need is radio & map.
