I've been a subscriber for quite some time and although I've never met you guys, I have zero doubt that Zach's assessment of how kind and helpful Andrea is, is 100% accurate. It shines through in these videos and in her helpful and kind responses throughout the comments. I'm in the market for a new car this year; first time I'll be owning a vehicle in quite a while. While I'm always attracted to Kias and Hyundais for their value for money, every time I seriously consider them, there's yet another massive recall. It's been going on for over a decade, and it seems it's always the same thing; potential for spontaneous engine fires, even when not running. How can they not have figured this out after all these years with the same issue popping up again and again?! I live in a condo in downtown Toronto. If I was to ever buy a Kia/Hyundai and had one of those recalls, I'd be screwed. I couldn't park in our underground parking and there is little to no street parking. I simply can't risk it.

I have heard lots of different opinions on oil change intervals. I would go with whatever the manufacturer says (any service manual?). That will avoid issues should something happens that would still be covered via warranty or some kind of special recall. Not following the service manuals gives the manufacturer an out if something happens.

Oil change intervals... Zack is right. Follow the interval regardless of mileage. Oil will deteriorate even if it's brand new & still in the jug. As has has been repeated ad nauseum, "Oil is cheap; engines are expensive."
@RegCoulter3 ай бұрын
Each and every video of yours, that I watch, is a pleasure as well as informative. It seems to be relatively opinion free, and more based on fact. Here in Saskatchewan, I own a 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid Touring, purchased the end of October 2023. I elected to have the oil changed this spring with only 3000km on the ODO, even though the service advisor at my dealership indicated that my maintenance minder was only showing 60%. What I said was, that since I’d purchased the vehicle, the temperatures had been as low as minus 30 celcius, my trips 20-30km, and the hybrid system did kick in (only battery power driving the vehicle) several times on each of those trips. As the ICE never really got hot enough for long enough, to burn any of the crankcase contaminants away (you know, cold starts etc), I felt it important to get that oil and filter changed and replaced with new. With that explanation, the dealership service manager agreed with me, and complimented my reasoning. As has been expressed many times: Oil is cheap, Engines are expensive! Thanks again for a great video!

Regarding the oil change interval question, the independent mechanic's advice is the best. Dealerships will always suggest shorter intervals because it makes them more money. Manufacturers will always suggest longer intervals because it helps them market their cars. The only caveat is to never go beyond the manufacturers interval so you don't compromise your warranty.

Our Volvo dealer says that to ensure there are no warranty issues, we should change the oil in our PHEV at the recommended 10,000 mile intervals regardless of the actual miles on the internal combustion engine.
@henryhonda84083 ай бұрын
I agree with that but to say change it at 6 months no matter how many miles is ridiculous on a PHEV. At 10,000 miles (16,000 km) is just fine in my books.
@billurban15813 ай бұрын
@@henryhonda8408 Yes it's probably best for potential warranty or policy issues down the road. My PHEV has 17,000 miles on the odometer, and I'd estimate the engine has about 5,000 miles. And importantly few of those miles are stop and go.
@stevenstewart13083 ай бұрын
@@henryhonda8408it makes total sense to change it every 6 months. The engine doesn't run long enough to spend enough time at full operating temperature, if it even gets to operating temperature, so it's not burning the moisture and contaminants out of the oil. Resale value speaks to what vehicles are reliable. Word gets around and the market decides what's the best one to get and when they hold on to them cause they are keepers that's when the value goes up on a mass production vehicle. Oil. Best What your manual says Good 6 months or 5-8000 km. Whichever comes first. Especially in colder climates. Not driving means any moisture that gets in the oil (and it does) can’t boil off and stays in the oil. It can corrode the inside of your motor. Oil change on PHEV should be proportionate to fuel use. On our i3 REx, we change oil just annually: - We burn roughly 30 gallons of fuel each year to cover 24,000 miles. - 30 gallons x 40 mpg (fuel economy when running on the ICE generator) = 1,200 miles. - Therefore, we consider it an annual 1,200 mile oil change.
@billurban15813 ай бұрын
I agree, but with free maintenance for three years of course it's by the book. Also I believe BMW recommends oil changes for ICE on av turbo boost. My conventional Volvo PHEV burned ~103 gal last year. That worked out to 104 mpg, and about $35 a month to charge the battery. Quite satisfying with 455HP and 523 lb-ft on tap.
