I think you missed the point of this tale. Gawain is shown as a irresponsible man child in the beginning. His mom sets up the quest / adventure to help him grow or die. He has no tales to tell the king, and no chance to be a knight. In the end he is given a vision of the man he will be if he runs as a coward. In the end he performs two acts of courage, removes the belt and offers his head. This is the point where he changes from a coward to a knight, where his life can have meaning. The green knight’s last comment seems in jest, but that is left up to us. To me Gawain lives, and lives a much better life, than what his vision shows

The 2021 is more an interpretation and less of a faithful retelling. Bertilak de Hautdesert, the lord of the castle is The Green Knight. The story has Gawain accept the final blow during the third attempt. The axe however only grazes him. The Green Knight congratulates Gawain, revealing his identity. He then scolds Gawain for failing to keep his word at the castle. Having been given a green sash for protection and not returned the favour. Telling him that the wound on his neck and the sash are both a reminder of his honour and failure. Gawain returns the Camelot where the other knights of the round table adopt the symbol of the green sash as a remind to always be truthful. Gawain only took the sash out of fear of death. With the lady of the castle telling him it would protect him from physical harm. Despite not having magical properties, the turns out to be true. The Green Knight never intended to kill Gawain. Gawain even acknowledges him taking the sash is an act of cowardice.

I don't think that the giants were an imagination. We already know that magic exists in Arthurian legend, and the Green Knight literally survived been decapitated. I don't think Gawain was hallucinating. Also, the giants seemed to be very specific and not just generic and all of them stopped in unison which seemed to be some kind of ritual.

It’s funny that in a way the green sash does in fact do what it promises. If he keeps it on, it means he is too afraid to face death and will not put himself in harm’s way. Taking off the green sash is the key to gaining all the other virtues he lacks.
@iamabot6073 жыл бұрын
Hot take. The Green Knight is the Lord (as it is in the poem) and the boy who steals the axe from him earlier in the film. We see that Gawain's interactions with the three are very similar. Give/receive something and give/receive something in return. There's also a similar look between the three. The lord, looks wise, is very similar to the boy which I do not think was by coincidence. As the boy mentions that he looks good holding the axe and that he will complete the quest for him. Also the lord has a very similar posture as the green knight. There's a brief scene where Gawain leaves the castle to head towards the green chapel and when he looks back towards the lord, the silhouette briefly looks like the knight. I also believe it was the young man, the lord or somewhere in between that killed Winifred by decapitating her with the green axe. This is why Gawain finds the axe in Winifred's house and this might be why Winifred asks if it was Gawain who decapitated her. I know some of this sounds like a stretch, but I feel like I am onto something.

The question of whether Gawain is a reliable narrator operates from a flawed premise; that is to say from the perspective that fact and fiction are two seperate realms, that magic is not "real" and thus anything that defies logic and "reality" must be a hallucination. Within folklore, we find time and again the message that reality itself is magical, that the only thing that prevents us from seeing that is our social and psychological conditioning, our limiting beliefs. Since the hero's journey is always about heading off into the unknown and coming up against humanity's deep seated fear of chaos, of death, of returning to the green, it's always a journey that involves encountering the limits of what rational thought can explain. That's why this is such a brilliant retelling, because it structures the plot within the medium of film so that there are various poetic echoes throughout the story: the green sash being given and taken, donned and removed, Winnifred's skull and Gawain's beheading of the Green Knight, the blindfold - first worn by Gawain's mother during the summoning ritual and afterward by the blind crone during Gawain's stay in the castle, Essel and the Lady of the Castle. These poetic echoes aren't meant to be explained, and they aren't meant to show that Gawain isn't to be trusted as a narrator. Rather, they're meant to show that throughout his journey, Gawain is surrounded by forces that are so far beyond human comprehension that the only way to understand them is by accepting that they have a supernatural origin. That's hard for us, living in modern culture, to understand. Gawain's encounter with the supernatural begins with his first encounter with the Green Knight, during the Christmas Game chapter. Obviously, the events that transpire after Gawain steps forward as the King's champ are *impossible*, and yet, they happen. But the point of them happening isn't for us to see that Gawain us hallucinating. The point of those events is to serve as a catalyst for his departure upon the quest that will test him and push him past the limits of sanity so that he can learn to accept death, so he can learn that one can not be a true knight worthy of being king if one is living in fear (fear of never being good enough, fear of marrying the woman he loves because she isn't noble, fear of his legacy being forgotten, fear of being alone, fear of being weak, fear of death.)

@Murasakitsuyukusa3 жыл бұрын
Erm, Gawain is not a narrator of this story in any form or capacity. Not sure why you think that he is. And it's pretty clear why his mother summons the Green Knight, it's shown in the alternate ending Gawain envisions through the Knight and/or through his mother's magic. The Fox is also Morgan le Fay's creation or even herself in disguise, as well as the Sightless woman in the Lord's castle. The whole castle segment in the film seems to be conjured by Morgan in order to help her son and warn him of going up against the Knight through the Lady's monologue. The whole film can be interpreted as another of Morgan le Fay's schemes against Arthur and Camelot in an attempt to make her son the new ruler. No rocket science here actually.
@mothernyx49333 жыл бұрын
I don’t know why the common idea is that giants and other things aren’t real. Like why can’t the giants be real? This is magical realism if not plain fantasy. I don’t know if the fox is directly his mother talking to him but I like to think that it’s her concerns manifested through magic into the fox. I was a little annoyed about that hanging thread of the green knight is someone you know. But I think it can be interrupted as something he knows which is death. I know the green knight is often seen as a personification of death and the truth he has been hiding from. I personally don’t think the visions in the movie are necessarily direct visions the characters are seeing. They totally could but I think it’s more about a way of conveying ideas and thoughts to the audience. The vision of his death in the woods: fear or anxiety around what’s going on and what better way to communicate that to the audience but through a scene. Same with the end. I don’t think it’s a vision saying he is a bad king but rather what he would become if he kept being dishonorable.

I think that is why this boring movie has so many defenders. A number of key characters were non-traditional castings. All of which are good actors including the lead. He did well with what he had to work with. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the sheer boredom myself and everyone else felt in the theatre.

I KNOW! And that CGI fox playing the role of a fox, and a CGI green knight playing the role of a green knight. The whole movie is just so far from the true story...

Cos they’re trying to change British culture just like Channel 5 did with Boleyn.

I think it's stupid to try and make this followable... It's not,even remotely understandable

Horrible movie. First A24 film I didn't like. Genuinely a dreadful film.

More cultural replacement I see in movies. Didn’t realise Gerwiaine was Asian and Winifred was mixed race. I won’t be watching it as like the latest Boleyn series our culture is being changed.

I suppose your name including the almost spelt “ninj” is referenced as a “ninja” I dare say? If you aren’t Japanese, I’d call this “cultural appropriation “ And my culture being changed.

Let's remake Yojimbo in color and have the lead played by a blonde Norwegian. Because, diversity!

Yeah, I was also mad that they didn’t cast an immortal creature of nature and instead gave the role to Ralph Ineson. It took me right out of the movie.
