The Deliverance :2024 | Maturity Rating: R | 1h 52m | Horror

REVIEW: I was recently invited to a small Q&A at Netflix with Director Lee Daniels for his new film The Deliverance, including discussion of the religious themes of the movie hosted by Theologian Candice Marie Benbow and guests, Dr. Teddy Reeves of GOD Talk, and Dr. Nichole R. Phillips of Emory University.
I preface that by saying, if I didn’t get a clear breakdown of Lee Daniels intentions and reason for doing this film, I may have skipped watching it, as horror is not my thing. But I did watch it and got a deeper understanding of his reasoning for tackling a film with demons , that is based on an actual house in Indiana, that was haunted.
Why Lee Daniels previously passed years ago, and finally made this film!
We are living in such dark times, Lee said. “I’m hoping I can help people find their higher power. As an artist, I wanted to check off a box in film making - but now I can move on, and I will never do it again. With Empire It was to do television, and with Precious, I was talking about my childhood.”
Unlike films like the Exorcist, the juxtapose of evil and ridding the spirit from demons, The Deliverance - gives a perspective on who demons -prey on, and why. If you end up in the wrong place, or the wrong house- you may have just let dark spirits in.
“The Deliverance” will hold your attention, and leaves you watching with the slow roll out, as you wonder why it takes all of the family members so long to figure out what is going on with everyone in there house, masked by their hidden layers of dysfunction .
Over the years, I really admire Lee Daniels, Producing and Filmmaking. He made reference, that “I’m no Tyler Perry.” But I disagree. Tyler tackles story-telling and tough circumstances through comedy. Lee Daniels delves deeper and is a risk taker. He provides the screen not just for entertainment purposes - but the issues that inner city kids deal with -reminiscent of Lee’s own struggles with addictions in his past. He says singer Patti Labelle “gave him his way out, “and lead him to Jesus!
Well hold on to Jesus - the panel urged. While the challenges with watching The Deliverance may be tough for faith leaders (based on the demonic subject matter and raw vulgarities,) the true message is that the film is opening up conversations (of how to stay away from evil / mental illness) that needs to be discussed.
No-one is immune from sin, so the bigger question is, how do you protect your soul, during these dark times? Lee Daniels also prayed before filming each day on set, a testament of his faith, belief, and continued redemption. A-
