The MER fee might be low for Questwealth but the ETF’s they hold in their portfolio’s have management fee’s that make up for having a low MER. It’s about preference tbh and which platform you’re comfortable using.

Good overview but the one huge factor not mentioned is that QuestWealth portfolios are actively managed whereas Wealthsimple are entirely passive. General consensus is that passive will always outperform actively managed which could be why we see better returns with WS despite the higher fees.

@doctordoom5734 жыл бұрын
could someone clear this up for me, for quest trade they have the 0.25% admin fee. The aggressive portfolio used as an example listed 5 ETFs so all of them have separate MER fees added to the 0.25%? so that would be much higher than the example of 0.38% in the estimated fees.
@kirupaashankar65194 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right you ll be paying Mer fee for each etf you hold on top of their platform or portfolio management fee which eventually comes to more than 0.38%
@randisney3 жыл бұрын
Each separate ETF is only a portion of your portfolio, so while an underlying MER may be, for example, .12%, it's not .12% of the value of your entire portfolio, just of how much you have invested in that particular ETF. You wouldn't add the MER's of all the various ETF's together to come up with a total fee.

Don't go with active management. The fee is 3 times higher and tbh they don't do much except meet with you once a year for the bank and 2 times for private brokers. I have private brokers for a good 8 years. They confused me so much that I got so scared about investment. This year I decided to learn it on my own and it's not that bad. Roboadviser is actually a lot better than a bad financial advisor who is greedy. Alk he wants is for me to invest more and buy more insurance. Thanks God I didn't buy any useless insurance and didn't listen to him. I paid off my mortgage instead of pouring everything in investment otherwise this pandemic is not pleasant.

Good video young man. Note that Quest has outside Canada funds, mostly and they hammer you with 1% exchange on currency. Adds significantly. Makes wealth simple more economical. And Quest is active (human intervention for rebalancing) and wealthsimple is passive. Big diff there

Thanks for the video, greatly appreciated Brandon, love your content. One question- Questwealth has 0.25% management fee + 0.38% MER=0.63% fee. Wealthsimple charges 0.5% and that's it? That would make Wealthsimple having both lower fees and better returns? Or am I missing something?
@simonec.92704 жыл бұрын
I have Wealthsimple and each ETF has its own MER fee on top of the 0.5% management fee. My total MER fee for all my ETFs in the portfolio is 1.23%. For context, I have a growth portfolio 80:20.

@@simonec.9270 do u use the robo advisor? How has it been? Good returns? No problems with wealthsimple?
@Udjeox4 жыл бұрын
@@simonec.9270 I don't think you should add the mer up like that because the mer applies to only certain types of etf in your portfolio and not the entire portfolio. You should take their average instead and then add to 0.5% base. This is only my thinking because your fee total is quite high. If someone can comment that would be great.

If all they're doing is investing in ETF's for you, why not invest in ETF's yourself on wealthsimple trade or questrade and save the fee?
@PriscillaThen2 жыл бұрын
Don't you have to manage the funds and rebalance it every few months? That might be too much learning curve and time/effort for some people (esp. if they have young kids, for example). It's definitely a good option when you're just getting started though.
@Dave0042 жыл бұрын
@@PriscillaThen I'd say it depends on your age. If you're young you don't need a robo advisor and can do it all yourself by just buying one or a few ETF Indexes since you're focused on growth. If you're closer to retirement, 10 years or less then it could help if you don't feel comfortable diversifying into bonds and fixed incomes yourself. But if you have 15+ years and you use a robo advisor you're losing 10's of thousands of dollar in fees you could have saved just going online and clicking "buy", a literal 30 second process. Lets say you have $200,000 and it grows by 5% per year (thats low but this is just an example) since your investment is growing the fee grows with it at its a percentage of investment. So 0.4% of 200,000 is $800, but after 5% growth the next year its $840, then $882 and so on compounded, so over 20 years, if you didn't add any money and the 200k just grew 5% a year you'd have paid approximately $29,000 in robo fees alone (not including fees associated with the ETF's themselves). Just something to consider.
