I am glad you cleared the air with this video. I agreed with it. However, I must mention that, in my opinion, Age of Calamity's log *cannot* be read like botw or totk's quest log, as the perspectives constantly change to the current player character or sound more like a narrator, as you play as multiple different people. It just cannot be said it is Link specifically, unlike botw.

@@kit76149Thank you, I appreciate it! It's been a while since I've looked at AoC's logs myself but I do agree with you. The multiple characters element definitely contributes to it and I do remember there being more narrative style text, too. Out of the three games, BotW has the highest degree of expressive language that could be interpreted from Link's perspective imo, but even then, there are still many entries that are only a few sentences long (in their completed state). Sometimes it's the entries that lead up to the quests completion that are more lengthy and are interesting to dissect

Honestly, the lack of pronoun usage in the diary entries doesn't feel all that unnatural in english. I feel like it's at least somewhat common in things like explorer's journals to do brief field logs that leave out the pronouns - "Day 2, weather fine. was ambushed by angry bear," etc. Entries were often done this way to save both time & limited pages.

Same, paused the video to comment that the pronoun-less translation actually felt perfectly natural in English. and captured a specific vibe of log-style entries, or telegrams. Honestly wish the localization team had stuck to that instead of the style they chose, which imho breaks the fourth wall to the detriment of the game's immersive vibe

As someone in a scientific field, this is literally how almost all research is written about. You definitely wouldn't read "I did a western blot to..." in a journal article, it'd be "A western blot was conducted to..."

It would have been interesting if Nintendo had thought to mention in the journal entries of BotW that Link was keeping a personal journal because he had lost his memory and wanted to keep some sort of reference in the event he ever loses his memory again, also explaining why he wrote everything very personally and in a first person perspective with a almost child-like wonder as he had just woken up after 100 years with no idea who he is or what he's doing there. It could have then carried over into TotK, with his memory now intact and being what, 5 or 6 years older, his writing style could have become more short form, matter of fact, even scared at times, like a soldier in the midst of a never-ending battle.

I absolutely love that idea! It would make sense considering how his personality changed after he awoke, too! And the thought that it could work as a reference for him should he happen to fall in battle again is fantastic and feels very meaningful! I like this a lot!

I did know that the Japanese version of BotW reads more like a diary, but I hadn't considered if TotK followed suit. I'll always love the LoZ games, but I think most people would agree that a little more consistency and detailed explanation on Nintendos part when it comes to simple things like keeping an ongoing diary across two games wouldn't hurt the franchise any.

Thank you for these videos. I really appreciate how you explain things beyond just “this bit of Japanese means this in English” and take time to go into actual linguistics and cultural differences! There’s so much more nuance going on, especially in that one example you showed where just a single entry could be interpreted several different ways. I am a native English speaker and I took Spanish in school, but the thing about Romance languages is that they all are still rooted in Latin and still have similar rules and conventions. Japanese isn’t quite like the Latin-based languages I’m familiar with, and these videos have helped me understand more about why that is. It’s so much more than just learning kanji and what each character means; I appreciate the broader perspective you’ve shared!

Link being a projected Blank Slate is something that Nintendo of America enforces on the series, while Aonuma and Nintendo of Japan in general have always framed Link as his own distinct character despite being a silent protagonist (this is largely why every Zelda manga never portrays Link as a Blank Slate.) The translation differences between the Japanese and English versions of the games when it comes to Link's characterization don't only exist in BotW & TotK (they are merely the most blatant examples), they also exist in every game in the franchise in varying degrees

Aaah... No, that's not true at all. Aonuma has been on record saying that he considers Link to be a character to project yourself into. It's not an idea made by NOA at all. That being said, I get the feeling that, althought that's how Aonuma sees Link, that's not how the entire Zelda team sees the character. But since Aonuma gives his team a certain amount of individual creative freedom, we get contradictions in this regard.

@@XanderVJwell idk when this interview you are referring too is but I’ve heard of a similar interview that is pretty old at least before btow released. Later around the time of btows release when asked why link is still silent he said something along the lines of “changing link to speak would be jarring his silence has become apart of the individuality of his character” this is the more recent statement regarding links relationship too the player not that the says “individuality of his character” why would he say this if link is sopposed too be a blank slate in btow, yes throughout the entire Zelda franchise link is a blank slate but in totk and btow he really isn’t. Hell btow is the first game you can’t change links name unlike every other Zelda game plus his silence was actually given meaning it’s explained in Zelda’s journal that link is silent because of the burden he carries. And it’s even said that he speaks to the other champions. Hell he even has his own in depth backstory with mipha and his father being a knight. These things all make it very hard to veiw link as a self insert character in btow and totk

It isn't forced. It's just the translation decision that was decided. And it's a valid one. You have to make interpretations when translating to English from Japanese.

Projecting ourselves as Link is one of the problems I have in both games. The Western Nintendo have nearly retcon almost everything written the original Japanese source material to make the journal entries a bit more of the player. But personally I feel Link should be his own character with his own thoughts, feelings, his love for Zelda, his bond with friends, and his own struggles that would make the story itself stand up to it’s own in a narrative way while connecting everything that has been established from Breath of the Wild.

i find myself when i was talking to people about the game using "we". someone asked me if i was playing with someone else and i was like "oh, no i just mean link and me". i never see myself as link -- i'm his wingman trying to set him up with princess zelda lol

The Japanese diary would have been fine. Why are we still at a point where Link is still just a silent slate. He should by this point have a personality. Once you've read the translation of his diary from Japanese to English I personally can't unsee it

Link's personality is pretty well defined in BotW, and further developped in TotK. It transpires through his animations, dialogue options, and mostly how others react to him and describe him. He surprisingly comes out as quite mischievous and cheeky (maybe to reflect the average Zelda player?). That being said, I agree characterisation is lacking in presentation and should be assumed a lot more. Wether it is through a diary, overall attitude like in WW and SS, or even taking the risk of giving Link a voice.

It's a bit odd, but when writing notes for myself I typically refer to myself in the 2nd person. I'll write things like, "You should do ____" or, "You might want to ____" as well as omitting the pronoun entirely. It's as if I'm creating a voice to reassure myself from an outside perspective... Like what people do when they talk to themselves aloud.

Because it isn't clear in Japanese. It can be interpreted as first person, but it can also be interpreted as second or even third.

This is what I think of this whole journal ordeal. In btow the journal is written by link and he writes about how he wants to see Zelda’s beauty again and the journal although not mistranslated into English is still more personal in the Japanese version. So the journals written by link in btow are still cannon (it’s not like totk went out of its way to retcon the previous logs) but in totk there is just general less personal language and most* of the logs can be interpreted as written by link in totk except for the few exceptions. hell there are even some things in totk that only makes sense if link wrote it a quest in the Japanese version of totk is called “my sweet princess” witch is obviously from the perspective of the writer while other things refer to link as name (although uncommon in the adventure log at large) so you still can interpret link writing the logs in totk

Video Request Idea: Link of the Wild complete profile, delving into his past, the personality tidbits within the journal entries, and some parallels to Zelda thrown in to boot. I really like the idea of a Link that wasn't a knight by choice, and that one memory in BotW where Zelda confided in Link and asked about his past, I found myself wondering if Zelda's musings, comparing her struggles to Link's, hit more true than she realized. If Zelda is the main protagonist of these games, then the silent playable protagonist should reflect her in some way.

@@a.jthomas6132 Regarding Link's feelings, it is only two sentences from what I can tell: "マイスイ―トプリンセス" "My sweet princess", which, because it is an English sentence written in katakana (and this is usually the function of katakana- to write foreign words), is using the English possessive pronoun "my". Then, there is "なんとしてもゼルダ姫の想いに応えなければ" or "(I) have to live up to/must respond to Princess Zelda's feelings" after the final dragon tear. These are shown in the video at 14:30 and 15:19, respectively. These are, however, essentially the only sentences that sound personal enough to come from Link. The rest of the log is fairly generic quest descriptions.

I don't think anyone wants Link to not have a personality, in fact I've seen more fans critique the game because of Link's lack of personality. I believe it's a Nintendo choice, not a fan one.

Given some of the story elements of TotK, it would make sense to me why the Adventure Log would be less personal than what was in BotW. But that's how I saw it, at least.

The problem (as far as I can see here) with using personal perspectives in some places is that it wouldn't work with other entries. Would have been weird for us to jump between 2nd and 1st person like that. That could be overcome by splitting it, putting Links persobal dialogue in italics and/or quotes. Buuut that would be even more interpretive on the translators part than just picking one or the other.

Yes, that was probably the problem. In Japanese this isn't an issue, as 12:12 demonstrates well along with tweets from Japanese players. But in English, it would be odd.

This is a great video. I’m really looking forward to more on TOTK, I tried some translation of the game’s main story dialogue myself in a rudimentary way, but I can’t get into the grammatical nuances like you can as someone who knows japanese much much better, one of the things I’m particularly interested in is the localization of Ganondorf related to his japanese. I could see that something was different about his character, but his limited appearances means the dialogue needs a unique level of dissection to learn more about the character. I am quite curious to learn what the localization team may have been unable to translate about the characters so as to discover new nuances about them from their dialogue.

Great video, i wish more people saw this and knew how challenging translation can be, especially with languages as difficult as japanese and as confusing as english (Long opinion incoming…) personally, i like both versions of the quest log, the english one makes it feel like im in the role of link, and functions more as a tool/guide (which does fit lore-wise in the game), while the japanese one definitely has more personality and could also fit in-universe, but to me makes it feel like im just kinda there along with link They definitely both have their pros and cons and i dont think one option is objectively superior to the other, or that nintendo of america is “bad” or “wrong” for any of these changes like i see some people making them out to be, because again, languages are weird and tricky to work with Additionally, i think the “blank slate” character used to project ourselves onto link is really neat, and works well especially in botw/totk with the second person quest entries AND links name being set in stone, when i played i always felt like it was still _me_ doing things, but _i_ was link, if that makes sense Besides, people wanted voice acting in the series, and that could only really work in a game as story focused as zelda if all the characters have a fixed name. And honestly, it really would be jarring hearing link straight up speak sentences in the context of a zelda game (an actual zelda game, not the cd-i ones lol) All in all i think they did the fine job with everything, and you did an amazing job on this vid 👍

Great video! It just makes me wonder this now; how many resources did the English team have for translation? The way you’re translating it seems to make sense without it sounding off (I will safely assume you know Japanese to an extent). I read a comment on here saying “we saved Zelda”. That’s how I personally felt while playing; if it was a struggle for me than it was a struggle for Link lol. And his personality is there in dialogue bubbles, idle animation, the titles of the quests, his gestures and nuanced facial expressions. Heck the beginning scene of him not catching Zelda has so much character with a hand gesture and gasp. And the main quest of finding princess Zelda is only complete at the very end when Link truly finds her, redeeming himself. You can read so much into his character, and match your own feelings with his from playing. I do wish the journals had a level of introspection just to give me feels.

But I’m confused when it comes to totk cause in the video it shows entries that refer to link in name implying third person. I don't know if you know this, but the main reason why NOA's English localizations tend to be so inaccurate is because NOA during the last decade or so uses "writers" to "improve" the texts from translators. The problem is that these writers have limited knowledge of Japanese, so they may not know when they are over-stepping their boundaries. This is in contrast with NOE, who make more accurate translations that are still well written because they go out of their way to find translators who also have good creative writings skills. Why the difference? Well, translators with good creative writing skills are very difficult to come by, so they tend to be more expensive than regular translators. Also, those types of translators usually prefer to work in other mediums, like literature, where they are even entitled to a small percentage of sales. So having translators on one side and writers on another is easier and cheaper. Even if you sacrifice quality.

In btow the consensus is that the journal is written by link among the Japanese community as mentioned in the videos so him saying “I want too see Zelda’s beauty again would still be cannon” since totk doesn’t go out of it’s way to retcon the old logs since it never mentions it but what confuses me is that the vast majority of the logs in totk don’t address anybody and can still be seen as link writhing them or as it being in the second person. But this is made complacated by the journal mentioning links name the entire journal is not suddenly written in the third person now if it was then the whole adventure log of totk would mention links name if it where truly in the third person however it doesn’t and this is made even more confusing because there is a quest that translates into English as “my sweet princess” witch could only be from links mind given the use of the possessive pronoun. So it again is made more complicated. Both veiw the journal in first and second person in totk has issue since if it’s in second person and when the journal refers to the player as link as “you” it wouldn’t make sense for it to mention links name in the journal since this implies that the player and link are two separate entities. For example if the statue of link and Sidon was referred to as “you and sid” it would make sense but it doesn’t since it uses w his name. So idk too me this seems like an oversight since the adventure log includes personal language (although rare in totk) that could only have been written by link. But also mentions him by name so it seems to me that since the majority of the quest descriptions don’t mention link by name and are there are also quests that use personal language I think this may be an oversight

I think that in totks case simalr to btow the vast majority of the quests can be seen as written by link since there are only a handful of quests that refer to link by name so it’s not like the entire journal is now in third person there is even one quest inpararticlar in totk that could only really have been written by link “my sweet princess” witch from what I heard is written in a Japanese script that’s ment for foreign words so the possessive pronoun “my” is already in the text without added context. So I’d say that generally it’s a mixed bag with totk most logs can be interpreted as written by link although they are just more generic but there are a few odd quests that mention link by name but since there are also a quest in totk that could only be written by link such as “my sweet princess” I think it’s a per quest basis where the pov changes depending on the quest or at least that the only way these discrepancies could be explained in my eyes

The TotK log is certainly interesting. I spoke to a few natives to get their impression and at first they thought it was in the first person. But after showing them the quests that include Links name in the text it became even more complex. BotW doesn't do this so that extra layer of complexity isn't there. I believe the Japanese logs are written very cleverly, but they do make translation and localisation endeavours all the more challenging though!

Since we can’t say the entire log in totk is written in the third person of this was the case any action that was taken by link would have his name. But evidently this isn’t the case but there are also other logs such as the “my sweet princess” (zelink confirmed lol) that is written in a very clear first person way. So it seems inconsistent too me, and considering the vast majority of the logs don’t reference him by name and the presence of logs that have possive pronouns. Idk I think that it could possibly be an oversight given the presence of both references to links name but also possessive pronouns like “my”

Talking to several people, the English translation sounds like the least accurate while others seem closer to one another and the original Japanese version (played the game in French myself and the alternative translations you provided resemble what I experienced). Despite this, the quest log being written is a constant in most western localisations, so it could very well have been a choice from the Japanese team. What you mentioned about TotK tends towards confirming this, since even the Japanese text distances itself from the first person perspective interpretation.

Hmm, this makes me want to switch the game to Chinese and have a look. (I'm a native Chinese speaker, but I play the game in English, because Chinese translations of Japanese games usually have that bit of Japanese-y feeling in the language rather than being truly authentic to how Chinese people speak Chinese. Also makes it easier to read English-language guides and wikis.) -(As for pronouns, Chinese, much like English, also tend to include pronouns in sentences.)- Edit: Ouch, this translation omitted pronouns too. Sometimes. More often in TotK than BotW I guess, but not always ("Trial of the Master Sword" mission text reads "*you* know this clue") Edit 2: I got the missions mentioned in the video translated below. I don't have "The Beckoning Woman" quest yet, but here are the rest.

I think you missed a pretty big piece of information about the adventure log, mineru outright reveals her soul was inserted into the purah pad and that she was guiding link throughout this second adventure, therefore the statue of link and Sidon makes much more sense as up to that point mineru should be writing the logs

The English dub is known for bieng the least acurate but all other translation exept rusain (from what Ive heard ) also take out it bieng Links POV. On the other hand the german dub for example keeps some stuff like "You want to see Zeldas smile again". Its realy wierd.

Ironically, Spanish has the same use of pronouns as Japanese but the translation is in third person too.

@@thecartoonsemotionit means pronouns can be left out of a sentence when it’s obvious what’s being talked about. It’s actually more complicated than that but that’s the most basic way of seeing it! Languages like Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, etc etc are pro-drop languages which creates an issue when it comes to translating them to English since English needs pronouns.

The reason why Spanish usually drops pronouns is because the information about who is talking, and who are they talking to is already contained inside the verb's conjugation. So using pronouns is more often than not redundant. That's not the case for Japanese.

The fact that the game makes bobobkins cute yet they're forced in a 3 way cold war to fight over zonaite is a mirror of what's happening literally right now. Zonaite isnt even a metaphor it's just renaming REEs which is described the same way used the same way mined, its refined into all the electronics and even the means by which we controls electricity and make computers. The war over REEs is why Myanmar was siezed as was Ukraine and is literally happening right now as its happening in the game. There is even a parallel to IPs with scheme stones. Russia is part of opec and wants to have a monopoly of the worlds power. He's represented as a hun just like Russians were the barbarians of the past, the Mongols the khan's, etc. The men went out to war and were like lynels while the society was matriarchal. We wiped away their history just like we did and still do with the celts.

I mean, I think I would prefer more of a direct translation from Japanese to English with obvious editing to make sense of some sentences/conversations but I also feel like the problem is that they need to at least have someone that speaks Japanese and English or whatever language working with both teams of writers and localisations/translators teams to have more context, and that opinion of the localisation is straying too far from the Japanese version and loses that thing that makes it more personal to link

@QuestWithAaron though I understand the mistake occurring. The Do in a katakana can function like a Ku, Su, or a Ki. Depending on the word, you can press the vowel out to keep only the consonant. Do is particular because in the syllabary you have consonant "t" which goes Ta Ti Tu Te To in kunre-shiki rōmaji, the Roman Letter System according to japanese logic, but it becomes Ta Chi Tsu Te To in Hepburn system, which focuses on stranger's accessibility, transforming every kana with an unexpected sound discrepancy into a more optimized version according to latin languages standards. This extends to the accentuated version of those kana that might version the issue with the non-accentuated version as in Da Di Du De Do becoming Da Ji Zu De Do. Finally, because when putting a foreign word in Japanese, you may use the -u kana to create a closed consonant, which is not practical for T and D because the -u version is an exception, they chose to have the -o kana instead because it is the closest. The same problèmes happened in Midona, Zanto, where the -o have been compressed. But another problem is Ravio, which lets ambiguity in whether it should be a R or a L, I believe it's supposed to be an L though, to have a parallel with Link, but that's neither here or there.

Botw and TotK English localization is pretty bad. I'm shocked that NoJ doesn't know this. Many modern Noa localizations are horrible and feel like it's done by people with little knowledge or care for the games.

Japanese verb conjugations are independent of person, number and gender (they do not depend on whether the subject is I, you, he, she, we, etc)

What if I told you that BotW and TotK were actually both originally written in English, not Japanese, English, afterall, English is the most widespread language in the world, and while Nintendo is a Japanese company, since 1985, its primary target market has always been the American market, with the Japanese market being only its secondary target market alongside the European market, and besides, Japanese is a very hard language to learn, and it's equally hard to translate it into English or vice-versa, so considering all this, it makes more sense to write games in English than it is to write in Japanese, and so when the developers started making BotW, and by extension, TotK, they decided to write it in English for reasons I've already talked about, Link has always been intended as a blank slate for players to express themselves into, which is part of the reason why Link never talks in any of the games, and it also explains why in the localizations of all other languages of BotW and TotK, the situation is similar as in the original English version, where the second person singular pronoun is almost always used in the adventure log, except in the French localization, were for whatever reason, the second person plural pronoun "vous" is used instead of the second person singular pronoun "tu", however, in the Japanese localization of BotW and TotK, there are almost no pronouns used in the adventure log, which is a clear sign of a mistranslation, and while the adventure log is still intended to be read in second person point of view, the lack of pronouns means that one can easily misinterpret and read it as if it was written in first person point of view instead of second person point of view, leading some Japanese players to misbelieve that the adventure log was Link's diary, it's as if the team working on localizing the game into Japanese somehow forgot that pronouns existed and just straight up ignored pronouns in the translation process, so no, the adventure log is not Link's diary in either BotW or TotK, that's a misconception.

Nope. The legend of Zelda isn't the legend of link. You're an interloper who takes on the avatar of link. It's literally based on the Meta aspects of the completely bat shit insane ultima series where you are the player of a game, the programmer is in the game as lord British and you enter the game through the portal ie the pc. The reason why you don't get affected by muddle or even puff shrooms though link clearly can't see through them and would be is because YOU aren't. Link is not a name it's a role. You are to link as Zelda is to the legend I. E. The emissary of wisdom the story crafter, and the one who guides you through her world like Peter Pan while being oracle of time and capable of changing the story though the destiny is always the same I e. You will however you do it temper wisdom ime. The know now of the mechanics of the game, vs Ganondorf who emanates himself through power you battle against through tempering wisdom and courage, and stealing power from Ganon back by beating his various aspects. That's why all the projections of Ganondorf basically teach you how to beat Ganon. You can use our shrooms because it's a meta game and you can see fine while link wouldn't be able to if he were ai as well. You literally see through your pov and battle through your "link" power up your "link" and most importantly and why it was such a big deal can save your progress as if you are also the hero of time via saves loads and telaportation. You master the mechanics of the world ie wisdom, master the ways of the monster and bosses and steal their power, since you're the emmisarry or and avatar or oracle of courage. You're called the hero of time, of destiny etc because the game has a predetermined ending but the rest is entirely up to you. Does Marin really exist? Is Malon just your mind playing tricks on you? Was the owl in links awakening kopera or was he just from Greek mythos? Zelda is very much similar to Minerva or Athena, with the owl familiar and the expert light bow. The game grows with you. You understand as much about the game you're currently playing as you've played games in the last or read the encyclopedias. But you also tie your own personal experiences in and play your way. Iwata wanted a game like ultima where it wasn't so convoluted with the 7 virtues which were too goody too shoes it wasn't fun and no one played it that way. The game was great when you played it as everyone did; the wrong way, you stole, you broke everything to get anywhere you weren't supposed to and basically no one ever beat ultima 6 or 7 by the time it became so sand boxy it was practically open world and you'd just run around as a thief and cause mayhem. Zelda took all the best elements of ultima ditched the spoon fed story, filled it instead with real life relatable current events and themes on life itself and let you do what everyone wanted to do in ultima, just explore, break whatever you wanted, steal whatever you can get away with. And there was no sky rim like system where I'd you steal you lose ate but gain Dex and stealth or some convoluted thing. It became ultra steam line while being a meta narrative about life and current events. The current one is about the war over REEs where they even rebuilt it around the kingdom of champa where China just tried to declare war over REEs. Vietnam has the largest caves and the ruins or buildings at the time were described by Romans as architectural marvels that surpasses Rome. You can see what the tropical ruins of champa looked like before the war and it was stripped by pirates to fill British museums.
