Qui Gon Jinn is a true Jedi, Liam Neesons performance was top notch. He was the first Jedi to become a Force Ghost and his lightsaber is so basic. To those who say "he cheated in the bet with Watto, he doesn't care about the other slaves" let me put it this way. In case nobody notices, Qui Gon Jinn was dealing with a slave owner. When he and Watto started to gamble about Anakin's fate, Watto was already trying to cheat Qui Gon in order to keep Anakin a slave. If you looked closely at each side of the chance cube, two sides are colored blue for Anakin while four sides are colored red for his mother. Therefore, Qui Gon Jinn already knew Watto wasn't going to play fair. Qui Gon was under no obligation to be fair, especially with an immoral cheating slave owner who hasn't been fair with Qui Gon from the get go. So what Qui Gon did was not out of selfishness, it was out of good motivations. He also tried to free Anakin's mother from slavery as well, but Watto wouldn't allow it. So there was nothing else he could do to free her. Plus she told Anakin to leave because she wants what's best for her son and Anakin had no choice but to leave her behind which was the most difficult decision he's ever made. It's not that Qui Gon Jinn cares about slaves, it's that he can't do everything at once. He's not Superman for God's sakes and he's not gonna go out of his way to free all the slaves in a planet that is lawless and is controlled by the Hutts like Jabba The Hutt and they're the ones who calls the shots. They decide who get's to go free and who stays a slave, And If Qui Gon tries any move to help free the rest of the slaves, they would all die at once.
@deiracity4503
@deiracity4503 3 жыл бұрын
I mean, even if he would have liked to help the slaves, he couldnt. He had no money they accept, only credits. To actually free all the slaves they would be forced to free them by killing every major slave owner on tattooine, which in the end still would not matter because other people would rise to power and bring slavery back.

In my opinion, Qui-Gon Jinn is the unsung hero of the entire saga (I don't count the sequel trilogy) due to his utter devotion to the Force. In life, Qui-Gon would have trained Anakin far away from the influence of the Sith. Then when the time came, Anakin would have brought balance to the Force by defeating the Sith. Posthumously, he taught Obi-Wan Kenobi and Grandmaster Yoda to become Force Spirits which of course meant they had to retrain themselves. And in doing so, Obi-Wan and Yoda trained the catalyst Luke Skywalker into redeeming his father and fulfilling the prophecy. Thus, in a sense, Qui-Gon Jinn and his devotion to the Force is what saved the Galaxy. I also think it's cool that Qui-Gon's name comes from the word "Qigong" a Chinese breathing practice that is most commonly used in Asian martial arts. Then there is the quote from Liam Neeson that I think describes Qui-Gon Jinn perfectly: "He's almost like a monk, an old-time warrior who is wise and quite philosophical, yet very skilled in martial arts. He has incredible confidence, as well as a magical quality that enables him to see into the future. He's not really a rebel, but he has his own code."

Honestly seeing ppl complain about "lack of character arc" when we discuss "Paragon" type character like Qui-Gon or "Competent" character like Chewbacca makes me wonder if ppl really understand that not every character in a story needs an arc or character development, sometimes you just have a character that is one of these 2 types, they aren't meant to develop any further,, they are usually meant to aid protagonist in their arc, be it by direct action or by passing down their knowledge and experience, and making an actual arc for characters like that without making it somewhat redundant or straight-up silly isn't an easy task and yeah Yoda is an example of how to pull it off well but honestly can't recall much more of such examples

@Starminor Ugh this is getting out of hand. There is a reason why I thought it interesting to compare Qui-Gon to Revan. You could say Qui-Gon isn't a charater. All he wants is to bring balance to the force. We don't know much outside of that. However because of that, you can call him rebellious or even tickicter of sorts, he likes breaking the rules, intervening in affairs, and is a very relaxed guy even when faced against sith. From my terrible description of Qui-Gon, you can compare it to revan. As a sith, he holds the characteristics of a Sith (selfish, lusting, aggressive, threating, seductive) but only in the first KOTOR. Most of that is gone in the later games simply cause we don't see much of him. He just becomes another selfish Sith... Which isn't saying much. And of course, as a jedi, revan is you classic paragon, bla bla bla, nice guy, so kind, bring peace, yada yada. So yeah, Regan isn't a deep character with complex desires. He has history and goals but little outside if that... MUCH LIKE QUI-GON JIN. Oh for fuck sake.

It's a sad rule of life that, when a group or organization lives long enough or gets big enough, it'll suffer in some way, often straying from whatever ideals brought it about in the first place. The Jedi were this in the prequel era. An order that supposedly followed the light, yet had become mired in rules, hierarchy and the politics of the galaxy. So far from their origins had they strayed that, even when a Sith is right in front of them, they're too diminished to know it. And even when Qui-Gon suggests that their ancient enemy has returned, the Jedi leaders are so overconfident/arrogant that they scoff at the mere idea of it. With the Jedi being this way at the time he started his training, what hope was there for Anakin to become anything other than what he did? 😟

I think Qui-Gon and Obi Wan both represent two different views of the perfect Jedi, where as Yoda and Mace represent two different views of the worst Jedi, and how all of this effected Anakin as the ultimate Jedi. Qui-Gon: -The Philosopher As most of the comments said, Qui-Gon was the perfect Jedi because he valued the will of the Force over the rules of the Jedi Code. Of course, Socrates would be a great figure to compare Qui-Gon too, but I also think he matches a lot of the Biblical prophets, specifically Isaiah who told Israel to stop their religious ceremonies and get right with God. Qui-Gon represents the devotion of the religious Jedi to the will of the Force. Obi Wan: -The Rock What I love so much about Obi Wan is all the temptation he faced and all the evil he saw, and yet none of it ever got to him. More than any other Jedi (especially Anakin), Obi Wan had every justification to abandon his role as a Jedi and go down a more selfish path. However, it was not in Obi Wan's character to abandon his teachings. He is like Captain America, or Sam from LOTR. Even when everybody else was giving up, losing hope, or giving into the darkness, Obi Wan stayed the course, and continued to help out everybody else until they had fulfilled their mission. Obi Wan represents the fortitude and selflessness of the Jedi helping others. Yoda: -Mislead by Tradition Yoda is the wise old religious leader who always believes in the good of everything, however, much of it is because they haven't actually experienced the darkness for themself. There is a lot of good and wisdom in him, and he genuinely seeks to do good for all people, but he is blinded by optimism and black-and-white rules of good and evil. This kind of person doesn't get much exploration in literature, but is a common dilemma in life. Religiously, there are many church pastors who are hard to talk to because of this, but it can be explored also in the book of Job, where Job's three friends conclude his suffering is because of sin he's committed. Within all religious circles, there's a tendency to think all bad things that happen are because of something bad you've done, and therefore the solution is simple: do good things. This is why Yoda clung too hard to the Jedi Code, because he didn't have life experiences that challenged this view until the Clone Wars, and by then he didn't know what to do. Report of the Sith returning and the Chosen One being found should have made him think, "Things are about to change; we need to be on guard." Yoda represents the misguidance of the Jedi that seeped in over thousands of years of tradition. Mace: -The Judge Mace Windu really was one of the greatest foils to the Jedi. His character type is that self-righteous person in the church that is always exposing the sins of others and making sure justice is served. And justice normally meant being shunned, or banned from entry. His only sense of right and wrong is the letter of the law. That's why he rejected Anakin's training, because the law said he was too old, despite him being the Chosen One. He was ultimately the complete opposite of Qui-Gon. Where as Qui-Gon would bend the rules to the situation to serve the Force, Mace would strictly enforce the rules be obeyed, and make sure you were punished if you didn't. Really, he could be likened to the Pharisees. Mace represents the legality of the Jedi. Now how do these all play out into the influences of Anakin? Anakin had a sense of right and wrong. He could tell that the Jedi Code was flawed, however he was also blinded by his own selfish ambitions. He saw the flaws of the Jedi in legality like Mace, in blind acceptance like Yoda, and saw them clashing with his personal greed. It is natural for a person in such a situation to just decide to resent the rules. Qui-Gon was that needed stand-in, assuring Anakin, "Yes, the rules are misplaced, and there is a time to focus on doing what's right over what's lawful. But that time is when serving others and the will of the Force." What instead Anakin got was Obi Wan, who was in the middle, but was ultimately an enabler to the Jedi in teaching Anakin their flawed philosophy.

I mostly agree with your analysis of Qui gon, Kenobi, and Windu. however, I feel you misjudged Yoda. you say that Yoda didn't have the same experiences as other Jedi like Anakin. Yoda has been a Jedi for over 800 years! I have no doubt that Yoda has experienced the pull of the dark side the same way Anakin did. Yoda is very wise and is a great teacher. he doesn't see everything as black and white, he just understands that there is black and there is white. just because there is gray does not mean there is no light or dark. I see what you mean by comparing Yoda to Job's friends, but when does Yoda condemn someone for the dark side? Yoda simply advises against the dark side. You make Yoda seem condescending, arrogant, and unempathetic. What about Yoda makes you think of him as a fool? Yoda is not blind and condemning. He is a wise Jedi Master. I also think you judged Windu a little bit harshly, but I mean Windu did the same to Anakin so I guess it's even.

I also love about the meaning of the character towards anakin in the sense of how his death affects him. I think it helps drive why he was so desperate to save Padme as whenever he's been told to sit and wait something bad has happened, with the obvious case being his mother; and in this case the last time he sees Qui Gon he tells him to stay put and Qui Gon dies; and while he did disobey and pull off some real pod racing, it's interesting to wonder if he thought he could have done something to help Qui Gon like the doubts he would have with his mother even tho he couldn't have done anything to help Qui Gon.

Probably one of the most underrated characters in Star Wars, and who should have deserved more screen time in the prequel movies at least with flashbacks, not just the animated shows! Like, he's literally played by Liam Neeson, who would go on to portray a mentor training Batman, among other examples, so how much more badass can you get with that?! Not to mention, Qui Gon had a Lara Croft looking alien Jedi for a love interest with Tahl, according to the comics. ;)

@@debzykvids I get why people like him, I mean, I do too. But, most people say he's great because he was the first force ghost, he is what a Jedi is supposed to be, and he would have raised Anakin the right way. That's all great, but it doesn't make him a good "character" per say. Which is why you see people liking Obi-Wan more than Qui-Gon way more often than not. Qui-Gon is great because of what he represents, was meant to be, and what little we saw of his character. But, the fact that we see so little of him puts him on the level of Tarkin or Lando from a character perspective. Great importance or great potential doesn't equal a great character. Qui-Gon's been one of my favorite SW characters since I was a wee tot and first saw the movie. He was so cool and intelligent, but oozing with compassion, particularly for Anakin and his mother, I remember how sad I was when he died at the end of TPM. Especially re-watching it after my own mother passed away when I was a kid (she actually bought me my VHS copy of TPM, which got my into Star Wars), it made me feel for Anakin losing a parental figure, and in the long run made his fall more tragic for me as well. And also, that line of Obi Wan's about Yoda being his teacher and whatever never bothered me because a) like lots of people pointed out, Yoda taught the younglings at the Jedi Temple and b) at least watching TCW, although Anakin was her master, Ahsoka seemed to go off on lots of adventures with other Jedi masters and learn lessons from them and sort of be like their "temporary padawan;" I'm sure Obi-Wan probably had many encounters and adventures that probably involved Yoda to some degree, I think either way, his comment is still valid.

Qui-Gon in many ways is honestly the true Jedi of his time. He was someone that Skywalker looked up to, as both a Jedi and as a fatherly figure. I also believe that Qui-Gon saw Anakin's penchant for the Dark Side. But unlike most of the other Jedi, he would react to it without fear or prejudice. In fact, I believe that if Qui-Gon was still alive, he would help Anakin get in tune with his darker nature. Not in the way a Sith does it, as we all know how that ends for most of them. No, he would teach Anakin how to wield the Dark Side and maintain balance within himself. After all, how can the Chosen One bring balance to the Force if he has no balance himself. Also, I believe Qui-Gon would think of Anakin's affinity for the Dark Side as important and not to be ignored. The Jedi often told Anakin to ignore these feelings and not indulge them, but that's part of why he fell. His feelings went unattended and ignored, even by Obi-Wan. Had it been Qui-Gon, Anakin would be an open book and Qui-Gon wouldn't judge him so harshly. He would help Anakin manage his feelings, not bury them. He himself would speak from experience and with compassion. Qui-Gon wasn't like the other Jedi. He didn't resort to brandishing his lightsaber at the first sign of trouble, resorting to talking and negotiating instead. In fact, if you think about it, Qui-Gon was one of the Jedi who didn't really have to use his lightsaber all that much. Honestly, the perfect antithesis of Qui-Gon Jinn would likely have to be Mace Windu. Where Windu himself has put the Jedi Code and the Republic before everything else, Qui-Gon often puts his compassion for others before the Code and the Council. He was the Jedi that Anakin should have aspired to. And Anakin did have compassion for others than himself. Especially if you recall his talk with Padme about Jedi and love in Attack of the Clones. If Qui-Gon had heard what he said about "Compassion being the same as unconditional love and essential to a Jedi's life", he would be beaming with pride.

If QuiGon isn't the jedi that he is then the whole story of star wars almost definitely doesn't happen. He was the lynchpin for so many moments in the story. He's the one who found and recognized who and what anakin was. He's the one who brought him back to the temple and was determined to train him even against the council's wishes. He's the one whose death sealed the fate on Anakin's fall to the dark side. His death also ensured that the jedi had some sort of backup plan because he was able to teach Yoda and obiwan from beyond the grave how to keep their form in the force (plus a bunch of other stuff I'm sure) which allowed them to be able to train Luke even after their deaths so he was ready to do his part with Vader and the emperor. So if he's not the greatest Jedi he's definitely number two. Or 1B.

Had he lived, yes just as with Lord Stark, everything would have changed. Catching up on TCW now and I feel it more and more. I often think that even if Qui-Gon HAD lived, he wouldn't have been the one to train Anakin because the Council would've deemed him too invested in Anakin's training, thus they would've still have Obi-Wan train him because Obi-Wan's had Qui-Gon's teachings but also sided with the Council. Qui gon Jinn is one of the coolest characters in Star Wars and he is underrated by most casual fans, but I think he is overrated by most hardcore fans. Many people see Qui gon as the solution for every problem in Star Wars. If Anakin was Qui gon's apprentice, Sidious would probably still be able to destroy most of the Jedi. in addition, while Qui gon would be able to guide Anakin better than Obi-wan could if Qui gon were to die during the clone wars, Anakin would definitely turn to the dark side. Qui gon is too lenient. he would be a great father figure, but he might encourage Anakin too much. I'm not saying Anakin and Qui gon are a bad match, but Qui gon is not the best match. personally, I think Yoda or Ki-adi Mundi would be just as good, or better, masters for Anakin. even if Qui gon trained Anakin to be basically the perfect Jedi, Sidious would still be able to defeat the Jedi. he wouldn't have Anakin for his apprentice, but he would succeed in every other way. Personally, I think fans have overinflated Qui-Gon's importance and prescribed him as the savior of the Jedi Order. But I think this is a gross exaggeration of his character. In many ways he is typical Jedi of the era and that's not a bad thing. He does not give into emotion, he follows Jedi dogma, and he is calm, collected, and he has remained with the Order because he believes in it. He is not a grey Jedi, wants to see the Sith and Dark Side defeated just as much as any other Jedi (which is why he fights them). The only differance is that he when he disagrees with the Council he makes it known. He's a bit of a maverick, but less so than Anakin. He always follows the Code and obeys the Council unless he feels there is some greater destiny by the Force (like the Chosen One prophesy) that can only be achieved by disobeying the Council. You could even argue that this devotion to prophesy makes him more dogmatic than the council. Like I don't mean to disrespect my old master, he was generally a very typical Jedi and that's a good thing. He was not grey just for occasionally disagreeing with the council. And such a trait does not make him better than other Jedi. Lest we forget, the only other Jedi wgo disagreed with the Council so regularly were Dooku and Anakin who took it so far that they turned to the Dark Side. Disobedience is a destructive trait in many scenarios and it was a trait of Qui-Gon. One can even argue that the destruction of the Jedi was Qui Gon's fault, as it was he who insisted Anakin be trained when Anakin was too old and already had emotional attachments. If the Council had it's way and Anakin was never trained there is a very good chance the Jedi woundn't have been killed of and the that the Sith would have been defeated right after the Clone Wars.

Qui-Gon's death was harmful to TWO characters, not just Anakin. If Qui-Gon Jinn had survived the duel with Darth Maul, he not only would have trained Anakin, from scratch, the proper way, but he also would have continued to push Obi Wan Kenobi in the right direction as well. As those two Jedi came of age, they would then take over Qui-Gon's ultimate purpose as a Jedi, and spread the purity of the Force to other upcoming Jedi. Instead, Qui-Gon's early death doomed them both to what would ultimately happen. The Sith would win, exactly BECAUSE Qui-Gon was not around to help Anakin attain his destiny, nor prevent Ob Wan from overlooking the signs of Anakin's falling to the Dark Side. Certainly, with Qui-Gon Jinn in the picture, Palpatine would not have hooked himself into Anakin Skywalker, and converted him so easily to the Dark Side. Without Darth Vader, and with far more Jedi to oppose him, Palpatine's victory would not have lasted very long. If it happened at all. Certainly, the Jedi Council likely would have discovered Palpatine's true identity far sooner, before he could put himself in position to attain total victory. All because Qui-Gon would have most certainly sensed the Dark Side "clouding everything," before even Yoda did, in "Attack of the Clones."

Let's not forget that qui gon's personality offers a glimpse of the fully realized Obi Wan Kenobi we see in a new hope. Qui Gon is not Obi Wan obviously, but neither is Ewan Mcgregor a fully realized Obi Wan by the end of revenge of the sith. The time spent between the prequels and the originals is the time in which Qui Gon's teachings must have fully settled. Obi Wan, despite beating Vader on mustafar had not yet realized the failings of the Jedi. I can only imagine once in exile, with only time to meditate did some of Qui Gon's most important lessons take hold.

Qui Gonn is underrated. He was one of the few characters that felt natural and acted more like a real person, not wooden or scripted like the other characters. Everyone always talks about Obi Wan or Anakin, when Qui Gonn embodied the true spirit of the Jedi. Liam Neeson probably the only member of the cast in Ep. 1 that felt suited for his role. All the other actors felt awkward in that film with the exception of Palpatine.

He’s probably in my top three favorite Jedi in the series just under Luke and Obi Wan

Qui-Gon is the ONLY reason I ever rewatch Episode 1. I really appreciate that Neeson didn’t over act the role, which makes Qui-Gon seem all the more genuine.

Obi-Wan loved someone singularly which is why he was flawed!

Qui-Gon was supposed to be the paradigm of a Jedi knight and Luke ultimately fulfilled that in Return of the Jedi. Even though well-meaning, Obi-Wan and Yoda still showed the flawed rigidity of the Jedi Council even in the OT. It's ironic that although on different sides, in Return of the Jedi, Yoda, Obi-Wan, and the emperor ultimately all wanted Luke to do the same thing (albeit for different reasons) - kill his father.

I can’t believe no one brought up my favourite character in the comments. He was trained by Dooku and, I guess Dooku would have been like Qui Gon as a jedi.

I think that "You were my brother Anakin" is best looked at in contrast to "You're the closest thing I have to a father." Plus, Qui-Gon's allegiance purely to the will of the Force is a great contrast to "My allegiance is to the Republic, to democracy!" even if the latter line was a bit misplaced in the movie. Since becoming a Force Ghost is tied to losing all attachments, I wonder if Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin only became Force Ghosts because they had no Republic and no democracy left to pledge allegiance to.

perhaps that is something Qui gon trained Obi-wan and Yoda to let go of. neither of them were trained to become force ghosts until after Episode 3.

I find it funny that people say what Anakin needed was a Father Figure not a Brother here's the thing if Qui-Gon Jinn survived then he would be the one to train Anakin so he would have had the Father Figure but Anakin also would have a Brother Figure in Obi-Wan Kenobi because they both were trained by Qui-Gon Jinn so Anakin would have had both if Qui-Gon lived Qui-Gon Jinn (Father ) Obi-Wan Kenobi ( Brother )

The guy at 8:00 hits the nail on the head. Qui gon basically sums up the prequels. He is wooden and monotone and is better in concept than im execution. In the EU he is fantastic but in phatom menace he is bland

This has given me food for thought. I've not revered Qui-Gon like most people here but will try to watch him though a different perspective next time. I was not impressed as much because he seemed a bit shady to me. Trying to influence Watto (which he failed) seemed a little bumbling and as the same time shady that he even tired. Even for the "Bigger fish in the sea" comment was always struck me as they almost got eaten and he 'seemed' oblivious...to their danger. Others have been more elegant in their replies...but I've enjoyed this discussion.
