Greetings, first of all thanks for the great tutorial. It is simple and quick to the point :) I'm having some problems with an older map though, I follow your steps but it distorts the map and it doesn't match with the "Open Road Layer" option. I think the map is in "World Mercator" Projection, I'm not sure if you could help me.

Thanks a lot for creating this wonderful tutorial.. I have one question: I am using a map from a research paper showing the distribution of a plant species. The problem is that the paper does not mention the projection system used although the coordinated are available.Which projection system should be used? You may have a look at the map: www.dropbox.com/s/ggxrbyzx5kbfndr/china%20map.tif?dl=0 Thanks in advance! And happy new year..

I followed this process and my map is showing to be over some body of water... My map didn't show a North American Datum number so I googled it by city close by and it gave me a number. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?

what do you mean exactly? You don't know the projection of the map you have?! That is "no problem" just use a geotiff Landsat file as background. So download it at landcover.org for the area you are working on. this will provide the coordinates. I'll upload a video for working this way in a while. but maybe this will explain the workflow behind: image to image georeferenciation using ArcMap from ArcGIS 10

Riccardo Klinger I downloaded a map of the Queen Elizabeth II wetlands Provincial Park from a website I found online. It did not contain the North American Datum number. I found (online) the NAD by googling the Minden Hills area. This gave me NAD83 (CSRS)/ UTM Zone 17N. I followed all of the steps until I got to time stamp 13:17 when you layer the map on the open street map layer. Both maps showed up, only my map showed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America. So I tried another method... Using the open layer plugin and open street map layer I was able to georeference five points on my downloaded map using the from map canvas feature. Then I get stuck again...This time the map doesn't show up at all during the step found in your video as 13:17. Some error pops up and doesn't allow me to proceed. ...

Hey Riccardo than you so much, I'm new to GIS and your tutorials are helping me a lot. I started following your channel after you had posted your video on Erdas Imagine georeferencing, It was awesome as it made my life a lot easier. Once again, Thank you so much.

So basically stick to ArcGIS or MapInfo because this is no good if you have an image without datum points.

Add Plugin > OpenLayers to add Bing, OSM, or Google base maps. It's similar to Arcmap.

If you have characteristic features in your map (crossroads, country borders, landmarks etc.) that are also recognizable in a background map from e.g. OSM, Google, Bing etc. you can georeference with datum points.
