The municipal water guys have gone as far as putting ads out telling folks to not put the grease down the drain because it means they have to rip up the roads to clean out the pipes.

I warm the pan on the stove, and wipe out the grease with a paper towel or, if there is a lot of grease, pour it in a re-purposed plastic bottle that I keep for grease. Throw that away every now and then, with the lid on. Then, if I still have to scrub it, I don't but that stuff down the drain, either. Garbage can.

As a vintage iron user for decades, I prefer to scrape or wipe off the greasy bits to keep them out of our drain pips & septic system. I usually turn the cookware upside down on the gas burner for these light reseasonings. I use my cheap infrared thermometer to check the surface temp. Your griddle is my favorite item to use to bake cut biscuits. (spoon or wet biscuits need the sidewalls of a skillet for support)

Nice video, Stephen. Thanks for sharing this easy care information. I live in a cold climate part of the country, so outdoor restoration of cast iron cookware is out until warmer weather next spring. So what is the best way to restore some pieces indoors during the cold months? P.S. - I do not have a heated garage or workshop so it would need to be in the house. Thanks again.

Do you have a video about seasoning a smooth pan? I have a 3 notch lodge number 5 and its so smooth you can see the grind mark rings in the metal. The back of it gets some good layers going but the cooking surface is so smooth I've only gained a very thin layer of seasoning after lots of cooking

I have a fire burned CI pan that was red and did not hold seasoning very well. I quit using processed oils and switched to fats, that made a big difference. The pan is now holding seasoning and is very smooth, although it's taken a few years without soap to season it. I used warm water and chain mail only with a quick rinse with hot water so that some fat is left on, but not a lot. Then I wipe the pan, spreading what fat is left, all over the inside of the pan for a shinny black look. Good luck!

if a cast iron pan is seasoned properly you shouldn't need metal scrubbers to clean it. lm 61 and have never used chain mail or whatever on one..or salt either. people love to make cast iron complex for some reason.

lt's cold here in the Skeena Valley where l live. -23 Celsius tonight without the wind. Tomorrow l'll season some skillets with a grapeseed oil infused with cannabis mixed with beeswax on a couple of my skillets to see how it works as an excuse to have the oven on all day. l'm curious to see how well this mixture works for seasoning. We made this at our Farm School last year as a 'salve' and it is thick, but liquid. l hope it works!

I don't want to be mean, but this sounds like new age woo woo. Seriously what is cannabis going to do? Also, grapeseed oil is extracted with nasty chemicals just like other seed oils. I don't see a reason to ever buy that.

@@verreal l have it laying around unused & thought l would put some use to it to see if it works for seasoning before l tossed it. l just care about the seasoning on my skillets, not how the oils were produced.

Mild soap doesn't strip the seasoning. It's the old school soap that had lye in it that the old myth comes from. Lye strips the seasoning.

@@truthofgod6213 I agree. I use a very weak Hong Kong store brand of dishwashing liquid with a sponge with thin steel fibers woven in (they don't have actual steel wool). But I also think you can use "baby" dishwashing liquid. Any one that says you can also use it as fruit and vegetable wash is probably okay. I really don't think the taste of the food is going to be okay if you use no cleaning products at all.

@@cindyhetrick8174 Steve also said not to soak our pans in the soap solution, our even in water alone. Not sure if you did that in the past and that caused the sticking. But hey, if you like your methods I'm cool with it.
