For the 2005 type tail gates there are some that use the screw that hold the tail gate as the fastener and it is harder to get out.

I've been doing this for years on any of my trucks. Like you said, it won't guarantee your tailgate won't get stolen but, there is a good chance the thieves will move on and steal someone else's tailgate. YOU FORGOT TO MENTION: ALWAYS KEEP THE TAILGATE LOCKED, EVEN AFTER INSTALLING THE HOSE CLAMP.

Scumbags will take anything that has a value on the second hand market, had the dash stolen from my motorcycle here in London a few months back.
