That caliper has some history to it. On the back it says made in Germany for George Scherr Co. New York. I don't know alot about George Scherr but he was involved in the Scherr Tumico co. I know that he had something to do with wood machinist chests and I think drafting tables.

Mouser wow we buy some of our electronic components for PCB prototype builds projects from them they are so fast and so nice to us little guys. You made that tool nice and usable again good find John. We see why you needed it for your lathe tool height setter makes sense, thank you. Lance & Patrick.

I use it all the time. It's set to lathe center line from the top of the cross slide. Set it on the cross slide, flip whatever tool holder/tool that needs reset to center line around towards the cross slide on the multifix. Gauge the height to the caliper, flip the tool holder back around to whatever cut position and back to work. Fastest way I have found to find center...

Just found your channel and it's really cool. You have the same machines I do. I don't have a tapper attachment for my lathe but it is well equipped. And I've never used the horizontal drive on the mill. But all in all I've got some serious viewing to do. There are groups out there for information on these machines. Parts are sometimes hard to come by but are out there even if they are homemade. I belong to a yahoo group for the lathe they have shop manuals and old guys with much experience. Thanks for posting and keep up the good work.

In my schoolyears (end 60’es early 70’s) in The Netherlands (lower technical school / (sort of junior college up to 4 years for all technical skill from maconery, metal, wood and food technics) the technics wanted mauser or mutitoyom both unpayable in the days. The beak of the mauser (also for inner measuring, but how again?) is very special. Love it, geat find, thanks for sharing.

Could have been made for the UK market too(more than likely)in the pre decimal days. Lots of machinists still use imperial over metric, I took to the metric a lot easier than most even though at school it was always imperial. Everything to the power of 10.
@BurtonsAttic5 жыл бұрын
Maybe....I said that just because the importer was based in New York.

Reminds me of Berlin in Germany. People steal everything at work. I lost many gloves, umbrellas, 3pneumatic impact drivers (within one week), vernier callipers and a entire Desktop Computer (I got it new the day before and when I returned to work the next day it was gone...) I lost countless ratchets and screwdrivers too... I’m glad I moved to another city :)

Is this a precision piece? How critical is the surface finish of the base and the measuring ends?
@BurtonsAttic5 жыл бұрын
As I showed in the video it is accurate to .001 which is what it was designed to do. Since I'm using it as a height gauge the value is not important to me. It's just for transferring dimensions. The stand is not calibrated to the scale but it is flat......

I didn't think about that Rick! I can see now- CB says "Hey check out my new engraver". Agreed. Seems like this may have been the one and only tool he had left after someone walked off with the rest.... Likely due to the fact that he had only put 14 marks on the others. Clearly 42 marks is the magic number!
