So have better equipment and higher double triple the people kind of the opposite of what lean does

Thank you for sharing your thoughts @goochnukem4950. In this example we see two activities that occur. Internal Setup Activities (www.leanstrategiesinternational.com/glossary/internal-setup) and External Setup Activities (www.leanstrategiesinternational.com/glossary/external-setup-time). While improving tooling and resources is definitely noted in this example the biggest improvements actually occur during the external. For example: People are in position prior to the vehicle arriving, tools are positioned appropriately, materials are on site and in place and each resource has a standard procedure to follow. In addition to this you are correct, internal improvements occur as well. Resources are balanced, tools are improved and capacity is expanded. It is important to note that these improvements, while not nearly as large as the activities that are improved during external changeover time can contribute to improved changeover times as well and typically would be performed only after reductions in muda ( www.leanstrategiesinternational.com/glossary/muda) or other non-value adding (www.leanstrategiesinternational.com/glossary/non-value-added) activities have been performed.
