Thank God eggs are back down to a fair price. When the bird flu hit MN eggs went to $5-7 a dozen. Thank goodness the local gas station chain always had onions and potatoes for $0.39 a pound, now $0.49 a pound. I ate pork solely for many years as a young man, but today I can afford to eat beef. But these pork and ramen dishes still make it to my table. Ramen is always in my pantry for those nights when I need a quick and easy meal. Good fortune to you. May your pantry always be full.

Irrespective of sodium content, soy sauce brings a unique flavor that isn't replicated by ramen seasoning. Personally I think the addition of soy sauce is perfect.

Sodium isn't the killer it's been made out to be, either. Many of the studies that gave it a bad name were biased toward negative results, and while they know it, now, they have put sodium on the bad list so long, they are afraid to admit they were wrong because people will lose trust in these edicts. Seriously. Sodium isn't the bad guy. Many cultures use massive amounts of sodium but do not have massive rates of hypertension or early death.
@curtismatsune3147
@curtismatsune3147 Жыл бұрын
@@LatitudeSky I never said sodium was bad. In fact, Dr. Jason Fung has pointed to studies showing that high sodium is correlated with longer life span. Now I know correlation isn't causation, but correlation isn't nothing, either.

Be sure to get brewed soy sauce that’s water, soybeans, wheat (although wheat-free is available and I prefer the taste), salt, and preferably nothing else (a particular type of mold converts these ingredients into the sauce, and some brands add a little alcohol to help keep the sauce fresh). Yes, it’s usually more expensive than the version with hydrolyzed protein and corn syrup and so on.

At least here in Germany in Asian supermarkets you can get a pack of "ramen" noodles with eight of these noodle squares for a single Euro. Two in the pan, add ~100ml water, add some dried veggys, fire under the pan, lid on, let that boil down, deglaze with a splash of soy sauce and add an egg or two if on hand. Yummy! And if you add up ingredients and electricity you end up at around fifty cents per serving.

I just did something similar today myself. I cut up a small venison tenderloin, put in the bottom of my insta pot. Poured two cups chicken broth on it. Put one bag each of broccoli and green beans. Set on slow cooker setting for four hours. After it was done I put 2 cups rice in it and mixed well. Cooked on the rice setting. It was a little dry so i put half cup water in and set it on steam to steam the rice some. Only flavoring i put in to begin with was a little soy sauce and Worcester sauce. Now i have food for two or three days for maybe $5 at most.

I agree that these meals could most likely comfortably feed the amount of people you say. I think a lot of people have a tendency to overeat and don't understand exactly how many calories they need to stay functional and healthy. That being said, I wish you would include a rough calorie estimation for each serving to better prove that this could feed so many people. I know just by looking at it that by serving for 6 people, that means I'd get 1 whole egg, some veggies and pork, and almost a full pack of ramen plus the oil which would probably be around 500-600 calories which is perfect for someone like me and definitely good for someone struggling.

Just a small bit of cooking advice, when you cook things like pasta or ramen noodles in this case, cook your main ingredients first and save the noodles for last. Add the noodles straight to the sauce or ingredients that you're mixing so that the noodles don't get all sticky. It's a small cooking tip I learned from watching Italian cooking videos
@CadpigJR

I certainly have made stuff like this a few times and FULLY approve of it tasting good, and being filling. I had one cost item that could improve this even more, off cut pork chops. I buy them for my fried rice and they do turn out nice! usually a small 'family pack' of 5-7 chops are between $1-2 a pound! they are a bit more work to cut the pork off the bone and into chunks, but on a tight budget that up to a couple of bucks a pound could be the difference between meat for din din or just the veggies and n00dz. Really though, I have been enjoying these budget meals, they give me alot of good ideas! I am no longer needing them for the survival rate, but that does not mean eating on the slim means you can afford another 'nice thing' in the monthly budget, or just keep a few bucks for rainy days. PS, hold the mustard for me, I am allergic, but you are free to eat it for me,

Oyster sauce is so essential to my ramen routine I take to work for lunch, I usually buy the stir fried ramen variety but I like the broth and soup kind so it needs a kick of flavor with added vegetables and meat. Mushroom soy sauce and garlic really round it out and I like some sambal oelek for chili flavor, but the oyster sauce is what really makes it good.

My mom used to make us something she called dry noodles. I should preface this by saying that I'm Japanese American and my mom grew up in Hawaii. Stir fried noodles were a common dish, but this was a quick an easy shortcut. She used soy sauce flavored ramen, which unfortunately Dollar Tree doesn't carry. For two noodle blocks, shed use 2 cups of water and one seasoning packet. In a frying pan, she'd cook the noodles until they absorbed all the liquid. That's it. You could add any meat and veggies that you want. I would just cook those first and set aside. You could use one of the extra seasoning packets to season the meat.

Nice use of low-cost & fresh items making a filling meal. I don’t eat out m a lot but friends save their by packets for me from ketchup to various sauces (Zaxby’s. We get Chinese takeout once in a while and I always grab extra packets of duck sauce (love the stuff) and soy sauce. I haven't bought soy sauce from the grocery store in a good while because I save all of the soy sauce packets from Chinese restaurants. I have one of those soy sauce decanters, that you sometimes find on the table at Chinese restaurants, and I use the packets from Chinese takeout to keep it filled up. And I can't even count how many packets of duck sauce I have in a small plastic dish that I keep in one of the drawers of my fridge. I not only use them in recipes, but I love drizzling duck sauce onto steamed rice.

Mr. Larry... I am older, and I COMPLETELY understand about the Gratefulness Quotient.... it is disappointing to see certain comments complaining about " serving sizes ", etc. .. I take it these Individuals have not ever struggled, or grew up not having to be concerned about the potential next meal . I was always Grateful for everything that was made for meals, when I was growing up... I taught my children the same Gratefulness. We were taught " food rationing " as in : not eating everything made, since there was probably going to be something made with the leftovers, or it was going to be another meal within 1- 2 days. My Grandmother grew up during the Great Depression, and I'd like to see how those who are younger might fare in THAT sort of a situation. ...and I'm not being unkind, I'm just expressing Truth.

@michellefox2384 ...Thank you ... I appreciate your reply, and that even being younger than myself, you have an understanding of " eating enough to feel better ", but not eating " everything made " just because it's there... I, too, live on a fixed income and I plan out a good portion of my meals, so I can have leftivers, " freezer meals", and that allows for the occasional indulgence of buying fresh pizza. Etc. I even freeze pizza slices, to have at a later time, when I do order a Pizza. I also appreciate that you understand " having just enough " as opposed to the alternative, as you stated. Blessings ~

Sup larry, things are seriously getting expensive, glad you are helping as many people as can, people should invest in bottle fish sauce and soy sauce, either one can season so many meals and feel elevated, im living my last days and cant believe prices, grandkids helped ne make a riasted chicken dinner and cost over 35 bucks🤢, a chicken and vegies🦧, happy holidays, tyvm tc

Fried rice is on the weekly menu at my house. If you have extra eggs, make a little broth with the extra ramen packet and drizzle in beaten eggs for egg drop soup. It makes an appetizer before the meal or a quick, cheap lunch.

Fried rice is so delicious! We make it a lot too. A perfect way to recycle leftover bits.

Appreciate the hard work. The biggest thing to me is dang you guys have 6 eggs for 50 cents? The cheapest eggs we got here is $3 a dozen. As an asian tip, if you have some corn starch available, you can use the eggs, soy sauce, and a corn starch slurry to make a "hua dan" sauce (essentially translating to slippery egg). Do a slight scramble of the eggs, add soy sauce to it, and then make a well in your pot and pour in the eggs + soy sauce and add the corn starch slurry and keep stirring. You don't want to let it set as hard (you want to end up with runny eggs before they are scrambled). It's similar to what you might see at Chinese take out as "lobster sauce".

Mr.Wolfepit, I am very far from eating "hard times" meals like this. But I LOVE your genius ideas for meals! I would never think of some of this and while I am lucky enough to not have a struggle meal. I might make these budget dinners just because they look so good! Also I hate Peas, YUCK!
