We used to use my mom's clamp on metal food grinder to make this relish at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also ground up walnuts with the rest of the ingredients. Fond memories.

I have been making this for at least 40 years. This means pre processor so I use my 50 yr old Osterizer blender, which I still use. Yes I bought it in 1974. Yes I use the entire belly button orange. Best refrigerated over night.

Thank you for sharing this. I made a raw relish some 40ish years ago but forgot what I put in it! Mine may have had nuts. Sure wish I could recall. But meanwhile I’ll whip up a batch of yours! Yum. Thank you. Merry Christmas and Happy Early Birthday to Jim.

That recipe has been my go to relish for several years. I freeze the large bags from Costco and make it throughout the year So it works great frozen in the Cuisinart. So refreshing!

I've made this for years. My husband eats it by the quart! No joke. My variation is to cook the cranberries in a pot whole, with the sugar and cut-up orange pieces , with orange juice and 1 tsp cinnamon. Then use my immersion blender. Way less clean-up! 😊

My hubby loves cranberry relish! I make it early and freeze it in small portions to serve through the year. It seems to absorb the sugar better if made ahead of time. Food processor works so much better than using meat type grinder.

I zest my orange before I peel it. I pick off as much as the pith as possible then use the entire orange and I use all the zest in mine.
@sushicourier9 сағат бұрын
Try it with just cutting off the branch end instead of zesting and peeling. The first time I made it, I thought it would be too bitter with all the pith, but it really isn't at all! It helps add to the bulk as well. Especially after it melds together a few hours it is perfect (and a lot quicker!) 🍊
@debbyborgerding9704Сағат бұрын
I make a relish like this but use zest instead of the whole peel and I love it so much I could just eat it with the spoon. I'm definitely going to try your way it's much easier.

I made this last year, with the addition of one granny smith apple finely chopped into the mix. Everyone LOVED it! It also kept in the refrigerator for two weeks until we finally ate the last of it. We will still have our traditional cooked sauce, but this is a very welcome edition. And it's great for Easter as well since it goes perfectly with ham.

How do you clean the wax off fruit and vegetable peels?
@jholcomb953215 сағат бұрын
Good point, and is the orange organic? I would worry about pesticides and other additives on the peel. At the very least, the orange should be scrubbed thoroughly.
@danbev854210 сағат бұрын
Yup. I scrub with a vegetable brush. I believe the ATK (America’s Test Kitchen) said that baking soda is the best thing for neutralizing pesticides on fruit. I think they did a quick soak & rinse. I’d love for Dr Pam to weigh in on this - when she gets time!

Pam, you know what would be great is if you provided a "nutrition" breakdown of some of the things you show to prepare Example 1 cup of refined white sugar = 290 cals/192 grams carbs + 1 med orange 80 cals/22 grams of carbs + Cranberries, fresh (1.0 cup) contains 12g total carbs, 46 calories.
