Wow..! Not seen anyone use a hand auger in the last 40 years. Nice to see it.

Cool idea. I cant wait to make me some of these for cutting D logs to build my small blacksmithing shop. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome idea Cody, these are things I have thought of often but just haven't implemented. Even though filming takes longer to complete a project I find I take on more projects and take them to completion. I love following your progress, it keeps me inspired.

Just got my mill today!!! Hurry up weekend, I can’t wait to take this thing for a test drive 😁

What kind of saw are you running? I have to take a lot of breaks with this 353 or it over heats. I find every 2 or 3, 9ft boards I take a good 2 hour break. Even with the Granberg ripping chain.
@JimiJimi10006 жыл бұрын
Trustin Timber I’m going to be running a 455.....I know it’s undersized...but I’m hoping for the best 🙂 it’s a fairly new saw, so I hope it takes the abuse lol
@TrustinTimber6 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it will be fine. I've milled with smaller but just take it slow and be patient between cuts and let the saw cool down. Not sure where you live but hopefully it's still cold out. When it gets hot I can't really mill. Trying to get a bigger saw myself.
@JimiJimi10006 жыл бұрын
Trustin Timber I’m actually in your neck of the woods, so it’s still plenty cold lol thanks for the advice, I’ll be sure to take breaks and let the saw cool.... we do plan on getting a bandsaw mill next spring when we start cutting the timbers to build our house...but for now, we want to clear the trees that are already down and use the lumber to build a tree house for my boys 🙂

Nice, I had the same idea but wasn’t sure if it would work but this vid confirmed it thanks.

This is a great idea. I'm about to try my hand at hewing small logs (too small to stand on). I think these might be just the solution I needed.
@TrustinTimber6 жыл бұрын
If you are going to be hand hewing check out my woodshed video from a while back. I hand hewed all the posts and beams. I love hewing.
@aaronstroud52786 жыл бұрын
I watched that one awhile back and enjoyed/liked it (I'm subscribed). Your video production is top notch and the projects are well done. My hand hewing will be for framing up a bedroom wall for my son. It's going to be reminiscent of English TFs, but without fancy infill.

Nice job. Love the three legged sawhorse. The logs I usually mill are a bit bigger but it would be nice to get them up higher.
@TrustinTimber6 жыл бұрын
These legs are Ash and seem to be able to hold a lot of weight. I made them pointing at the bottom so they dig into the ground and gain traction not to split out.

What this hand drill that you’re using to make the hole in the log?
@TrustinTimber3 жыл бұрын
It's just an old hand auger bit.
@brianconnor63994 жыл бұрын
Very neat. Newb question: what are those two tools you use to make the holes for the legs? Thanks.
@TrustinTimber4 жыл бұрын
the tools I'm using in this video are a wood auger or also called a timber frame auger and a chisel. The chisel was to help make the hole bigger. I've since got a bigger auger and now don't have to bother with the chisel part. You can see a set I made recently (two years later) here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGmwhZubiNWLmNU

With this much splay to the legs I'd think when a large load gets on it the possibility of failure is great.
@TrustinTimber6 жыл бұрын
Pat M the legs are made of ash and squared in pretty deep. If you know wood you’ll know Ash has a lot of flex. I’m feeling confident. Holding up good so far. If they were pine they would be broken for sure.
@Seriouslydave4 жыл бұрын
was searching for exactly this. question to save time in the field have you ever tried to plunge cut a hole and same shape with the leg like an oval cut? if your saw is smaller.
@TrustinTimber4 жыл бұрын
david vickers I don’t t really have a plunge cut type of tool but now I got a bigger auger bit that I use.

How did you come to choose an electric chain saw for woodland use?
@TrustinTimber6 жыл бұрын
James Ellsworth I can carry it in my backpack :) It’s also really quiet, and for quick little cuts it much easier to push a button than pull starting all the time. Chain break also stops the chain instant so it just feels safer as well.
