For backgrounds: If u have like frogs or species that climb alot, doing the spray foam method is gives u more ways to enrich the enclosure. You can add wood, cork, or even make ledges out of chunks of foam!

You guys have to see the sweet piece of wood I found. It’s like a completely dried out hollow half-log with a cool knot-hole in the top. But it’s absolutely massive so I’m saving it for the perfect future build.

I’m sure that’s a great piece of wood! Glad to find someone who values wood bc my friends think it’s funny when I find a good piece. But they don’t get it bc there not exotic animal keepers

I laughed so hard watching this! The way you talk and describe things along with the editing, is just great! My Ball Pythons need the plastic hides because I have to put something heavy on top of them or they don’t stay down. I’ve got two 4x2x2 enclosures coming soon and I can’t wait to try something different for the hides. Another great video!!🐍❤️🐍

Protp if you have one of those plastic hides, you can bury it in the substrate to hide the ugly and to simulate a burrow.
@MintyFarts2 жыл бұрын
hey tyler. one great thing you can do with plastic hides or plastic storage containers of various size, is make an under soil burrow type hide. this makes it so they have multiple types of hides and it wont collapes. I make connected hides this way under soil or stacked etc. it helps build up the landscape too reducing the soil you need if you take wood fomr outside dry it then bake it to remove potential bad things..

I totally agree with what you were saying about plants thriving in enclosures. My plants always do so well in all of my bioactive tanks! The only reason they ever die is if they get trampled by my bigger animals.

Can someone point me to the cling material for covering the sides of the enclosure? Apologies if there is a link somewhere that I've missed.

Jungle Dawn lights aren't _that_ expensive. I got the 22W, 18 inches, for around $70, from some chain pet store. Can't remember, ordered online. At that price, compared to biodudes and neherp, it's pretty competitive, imo. Great work, Tyler. I love your channel. You really crack me up sometimes lol

Don't forget to create a drainage layer. It's vital if you're gonna use live plants.

Zoo Med has a new(ish) substrate: Excavator Clay that is awesome for making natural looking stone caves and whatnot. It molds like wet play sand and then dries hard and stands up to high heat and frequent misting. I made a hide for my leopard gecko using an old soup can to hold the shape while it dried. She loves it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that you have to heat anything to a certain degree that you bring outside to inside regardless of looks. I'm hardly a expert tho, so I'm here to learn. Love your content lots ❤
@ashleyzuras80062 жыл бұрын
You are correct on that. I think I did 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 mins for some magnolia leaves I found around my apartment. I did wash them first. I haven’t found any good wood pieces yet. I don’t think I would like little spiders or mites crawling around my tank. I have my leopard gecko tank in my room. I got some corks pieces though and she loves them

@@ashleyzuras8006 That is a good way to save on money! I live next to a forest so I guess that would be a easy way to decorate if I ever get around to getting a snake.

I put my sand boa in all sand and she does just fine. I think people get stuck on the idea that they have to feed the snake in its enclosure every time to not stress it out or for other reasons. I almost always take mine out. Sometimes they eat better if not taken out, but definitely don’t have to worry about impaction if you just feed them in a separate container.

Sometimes a hardware store will cut it for you if you pay them. If you don’t want to pay then if you know someone who’s into wood working they might have an orbital saw they can cut it with.

Alright now here is a question for you What do you do to keep a bioactive enclosure looking NICE and keep live plants alive when you have Toads who absolutely REFUSE to NOT dig everything up? I have a 55 gallon long with 2 American toads, 4 inch depth of soil/ coco coir and natural bark hides. and every single live plant I add my toads immediately swarm to dig it up I starting putting my plants in terracotta pots IN the enclosure My toad climbed INTO the pot, dug the plant from the dirt and physically pushed it OUT of the pot then crawled back out of the pot under the bark hide -_-* Its been 4 years and no less than 37 live plants I once tried to add an air plant attached to wood into the enclosure and within 2 days it got ripped off the wood and sat on.
@LostVivarium2 жыл бұрын
Tie mesh bags around the roots of the plants filled with substrate or media and then bury them . If your toads did them up atleast the root system won’t suffer . You could also try burying deeper . “Bioactive” enclosures won’t permanently stay “tidy and clean “. Mold will boom and bust , plants will try to engulf the tank , some will die off and then come back .A successful bioactive enclosure with real plants will tend to look a orderly mess unless you plan on trimming and pruning all the time . Automatic misters also help a ton with keeping some of these tropical plants alive .also with toads ( I have two bull frogs myself ) you’re going to want to plant easy growing plants that can take abuse such as epipremnum.
@xBullTerrierFreakX2 жыл бұрын
@@LostVivarium The mesh bags are a fantastic idea! Thanks so much! So far I've tried 3 varieties of Pothos, several varieties of Syngoniums, philodendron and even a parlor palm and lucky bamboo 😂 They rarely last longer than a week because I go to sleep and in those 8 hours the roots are exposed and dry out. But absolutely going to try mesh bags!

On calci sand, dont ever use it. I rescued a beardy that was kept in that crap for five years, her growth was stunted. Its hard for her to walk normal. She was over calcified. The guy I took her from said she was mean and would bite. I took the sand out and she was actually happy like visible happy she opened her eyes more and came right up and started licking my fingers and hand crawled up and sat on my shoulder. She hated the sand. Any way her name is Corn. After the corn kid. Shes happy now and we are still on the road to recovery but dont ever use that sand.

I took a plastic container that I already had and cut a hole for an entrance in it. It's very ugly, I know, but I have it buried under substrate and plants. You can't even see it and my fire skink loves it. She is also not trusted with live plants at all. I'd love to have real plants with her. But with how she uproots everything, no, just no. She gets fake plants and I'm ok with that. I did put live plants in my giant day gecko's enclosure. There're still fake plants in there right now, but will be taken out as the real plants fill in. The only one that will definitely stay is right next to the waterfall. And that's only bc its coverage is perfect, and I don't have to worry about it breaking down from water constantly hitting it. Then there is my female beardie, I put fake plants in her enclosure as a filler when she was a baby. I would get the beardie wrath if I ever take them away from her. It's bad enough when I take them out to clean them. I ended up just making a whole wall of them for her. She sleeps on them and spends most of her non basking time on them. She's my little flower child diva. I've spent good money on other decor for her, but dollar store flowers are her thing. I can't complain though, it makes her content.
