You sir are a hero! It dropped to -15F last night and the mr. heater in our barn wasn't working. Our chicken's water was frozen and the well actually froze too so we had no way to get them water. I came back inside thinking we'd have some casualties over night and luckily found your video, watched the whole thing and hoped this was the issue. I went back out to the barn (it's 1am by this time) and I popped open the heater and saw the 3 blinks on the LED. Pulled off tube, cleaned out the connector with a small drill bit, put it back on and it worked! Our chickens thank you very much for literally saving them. Thank you!

Here we are almost 4 years later, and your video saved me a ton of grief. 6 degrees here in Iowa and my shop full of inventory for coatings, paints, and mastics was 28 degrees when I walked in this morning (thermostat always set at 50 to keep products usable). Found your video, and after digging in, you might as well have been using my heater for your video - everything was identical. Followed your steps, and wallah, up and running and back on its way to 50 degrees. You saved me the cost of a hvac visit, as well as $20k in inventory from going bad. Thank you sir!

I ran across your video in a desperate attempt to fix my Bigg Max 80. Purchased in Dec. of 2020. The problem I was having was that the unit would kick on and run normally for a bit, but then the flames would shut off for a minute and then re-ignite. The fan would never stop running and there were never any error codes. This short cycling would happen for as long as the t-stat called for heat. This problem happened from the initial start up. It obviously took much longer to heat the shop than it should. Again there were never any error codes. This unit was converted to propane and I had a HVAC tech out to check my install over, and adjust gas pressure at the gas valve. I did as you suggested, and looked for blockages, and tested the switch with light suction. All seemed fine. No evidence of condensation in the tube. No changes in what the unit was doing. After a frustrating search, I found an internet forum, and someone having the same problem on the same model. He contacted the techs at Mr Heater and they suggested he turn the pressure switch over and it worked for him. I tried the same and viola! It worked! I have no idea why but I am not complaining. No bypass, just unscrew the switch from the bulkhead, turn it over and re-install. I had to clip a couple zip ties to get enough slack in the wires. In defense of Mr Heater, I worked with them since I installed this and they were always helpful. They sent me a new gas valve and computer board at no charge to replace. Neither of those things made any difference.

Another satisfied Mr. Heater owner. I'm here in Alaska and there are NO KNOWN repairmen for this great heater. Three flashing lights, just as you said. Used your 'clean out the tube' repair method and it worked great. Started right up. It was likely that when I pulled the clear tube off the nipple, it broke off about 3/4 of an inch of tubing. Didn't notice it until I tried putting the tubing on again and it would not slide on. Thank you very much. Great video.

Thanks. I had no idea how common this issue was until putting up this video and then seeing how many views it's gotten! Glad it's helped. I recommend people now proactively clean that port out at the beginning of the heating season to help prevent issues.

Wow-can't believe how easy that was. I was about to call a heating tech, decided to try this first. There was no flashing LED though, but decided to check the tube anyway. Just like yours, a tiny piece of crud in the port. Cleaned it out with a piece of wire, did the suction test and she fired right up! 5 minutes start to finish-a million thanks!

Truth be told I had to do this again last week after firing it up for the season. Might be worth doing it every year at heating season.

Same situation for me...your video hit the nail on the head. I have the 80,000 BTU Big Maxx, been installed for 5 years. I removed the tube from the blower as you mentioned and could see blockage down inside the nipple using a flashlight. Used a small diameter wire and cleared the blockage...appeared to be corrosion of some sort. Once that was cleared and the tubing reinstalled, the heater works like a champ. Sure do appreciate you taking the time to make the video.

My Big Maxx unit stopped working, so I called an HVAC business to service it. Fortunately for me, they didn’t answer, so I left a message for them to return my call. I decided to do a KZbin search, and found your video. Following your instructions, I found the exhaust housing tube clogged. A paper clip cleared the clog, and the unit is working again. Took about 15 minutes to fix. Probably saved me $100 service call. Thanks for posting the video.

Must say Big Max heater is a excellent company, and cares about it's customers. My three flash code became quite involved. Replaced 3 pressure switches, motherboard, gas valve, and a transformer. They then sent new gaskets for the exhaust manifold. I must say they did all these parts on warranty. Did all the other things also like checking pressure switch tubing and hole clearance. To make a long story short when replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets had manifold upside down, and could see a wasp nest about the size of two golf balls at the bottom of it. Removed wasp nest, replaced gaskets and it is cycling normally.

I have the 80,000 BTU version of the Big Maxx in my garage installed December 2017 and have experienced the same problem with my heater (3 flashing green LED). I was on the phone with customer service in Jan 2018, I cleaned out the blower motor with a 5/64th drill bit as advertised, which my unit did not have any debris clogging it. The unit started and ran for a few days and it happened again, 3 flashing green LED. I had the customer service folks send me a new pressure switch and I replaced it. The unit worked for 2 days and it is no longer firing up. I'll call customer service tomorrow and attempt to find another solution. Thank you for posting this video, it makes perfect sense.

I know this is an old video, but I just installed my heater, plumbed it, and everything seems to operating okay, ......except that it only burns for about one second and then goes off and then a few minutes later, it reignites and burns another second. In the meantime, the fan runs continuously. I'm getting a steady led blinking, slow for no gas demand and faster for demand for gas, so no idiot lights. Do you have an idea what might cause that? It effectively renders the heater useless right now because the fire doesn't stay on long enough to heat anything. Also, the flames don't seem to be quite as strong as yours were. Close but not quite. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

I would check your flame sensor next. If the gas and flame turns on but then turns off I would suspect that the flame sensor is not sensing the flame, and shutting it down.

Thanks for the video! Mine did the same thing after a couple years of use. I first tried suction and air pressure on the bottom end of the hose. That didn't help so I tried pulling the hose off the blower base and inserting an unbent paper clip in the nipple, wiggling it around thru the much smaller hole at the base. That removed what felt like a little obstruction and the heater worked again. But in the next few months I had to do it two more times. I thought that maybe the tiny hole at the base of the nipple was clogging up due to sawdust in the air or maybe rust was developing on a factory punched out hole that was then no longer galvanized, so I used my drill with a drill bit that was just one size too big to fit thru that tiny hole. Sorry, I don't recall the exact size; just the next size up in my drill bit selection. I drilled out the hole and it's been a little more than a year now without the problem so perhaps I can suggest doing that. Good luck!

Totally impressed. I would challenge an HVAC professional to give a video this helpful.

Straw not necessary. And I just leave my cover off. 4-5 times a season I have to blow that out. Looking for a different heater.

I installed two of these maxx units in my garage, plan A and plan B if one of them does not ignite the the other will still heat the shop fairly well . This is great when the weather is already cold . When I have time I can fix the unit that has bug crap in that hole.

Adding my voice to the chorus of thank yous - this trick fixed my unit as well. It has been giving me trouble off and on for 2 years and now just quit completely. Clearing out the port hole fixed the issue. Inserted a rod until I met resistance at about 0.75" and then broke through some kind of hard blockage. At least I know now what to do in the future. I wonder what the material is that blocks the hole? Almost looks like some kind of calcification or something leaking within the blower. Thanks again.
@InternetDude4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it does seem like calcification. I've had this issue happen again since I made this video. It would be nice to have a permanent "fix" so I don't have to do this every other year.

@@InternetDude Had to do it again this year! Same hard blockage in that port hole. Bizarre problem.
