My AC wouldnt turn on. It ended up being the 20 amp fuse in my basement. I still have old wiring. As soon as I started screwing in the new fuse the ac turned on! woohoo. At first I thought it might be the fuse(s) outside. Had to deal with that whole capacitor/fuse thing last year. not fun trying to learn all this and try to figure out what might be wrong.

Why would the disconnect box need to be replaced? Are some of those old disconnect plugs hard to find?
@gwenwalker758 Жыл бұрын
How was that unit running at all with the disconnect gone?
@throttlebottle59066 жыл бұрын
someone did a nice fix for missing disconnect plug >_> (sarcasm) a quickie shortcut is checking for voltage across the fuses, the one showing 240V is bad/blown/open fuse :) it always works assuming you have 240v coming into the box(line side), condenser is wired, contactor pulled (check from each condenser/load leg to ground and see 120v) >> that shows the condenser is passing the voltage through back to an "open" fuse, it also shows there's likely not a dead short or something would be humming and hot trying to run at 120V.
@throttlebottle59066 жыл бұрын
this also works in case of 3 phase and pretty much any suspected blown fuse, it assumes you've checked and know there's power coming in one side and some form of load on the other side. ideally you'd never want to stick a fuse in or pull one under load, more so the higher voltage and phase count!

We had a big storm, and the compressor stopped working. I changed the fuses and then restarted it and immediately compressor unit sparked and then a puff of smoke. It looked like it was coming from the wires under the fan blades.cut off the power right away. Is the unit shot? I would like to understand before I call a service man , who most likely will want to replace the entire unit since it is old but worked fine until now. Can someone help this single mom troubleshoot

Looks like he would at least want the disconnect replaced. It has been several years since I helped do any Electrical work, but those disconnect boxes are pretty cheap, of course I guess everything is going up now days, but technically couldn't a repair man sue someone for not having a proper disconnect right there at the unit?

I have a question. I have a central air conditioning system York. The problem is that the compressor will turn on sometimes and other times it will not turn on. The tech replaced capacitor, the thing that holds the wires from thermostat (don't remember name), cleaned the evaporator coil and condenser, added a jump start to electric box for compressor, checked for leak, but their was none, thermostat wire was chewed on a little bit but we spliced it and fixed that. Do you have any suggestions. Could it be thermostat wire or the thermostat itself (but it turns the furnace on and that works) or could it be an electrical problem. Thanks.

Looks to me like the customer's botched one up, capacitor that is and has done so using an even older capacitor than the one he removed.

he'll end up replacing it, if any inspections take place before sale. oh-well.
@christiancenturion41234 жыл бұрын
Not all inspectors will look deep into HVAC units or every aspect of the house for that matter. I know this because when i purchase my house recently the NEW AC wasn't working at the time of inspection. (it was fixed easily and running by the time we closed) .However when i opened up the connector box the inspector yelled "do not touch that, you don't want to to touch anything or try to fix it yourself because then you will be at fault". The inspector did nothing and simply wrote in the report, central AC not working at the time of inspection. and yadda yaddah. You would think that they're doing their job but sometimes lack of knowledge or "liabilities" get in the way.
@throttlebottle59064 жыл бұрын
@@christiancenturion4123 he's right, first thing you do is complain and make them call a company without touching anything but the thermostat switch/buttons or better yet, let the inspector :)

@@throttlebottle5906 You see, sometimes the answer is quick and easy and right in front of you if you look. You can find the root of the problem instead of making a big deal out of everything. Gonna waste a whole lotta money if your first course of action is to call a technician for every little thing before attempting.
